She didn’t even register wha he had said, but she… she needed to focus. She looked away just after catching a glimpse of his arm before making her way to her position though paused for a moment when he said she was right. Everyone usually put her down for her assumptions or ideas. They would tell her she was just some dumb kid… everyone but Tengoku… that and Yuichi sorta… he had been listening to Yasu. Yasu was usually right. Her pupils slimmed a bit at the mention of any village the city might fall on. She had only been thinking about those in the city before. This was way more dangerous than she had thought. She then shook her head,
“I doubt it needs power. The power supply should already be there if it wasn’t we wouldn't be afloat still. They may just end up breaking the device itself which is why the city is messing up… Possibly. Either way, if we can hold them back long enough…” She paused thinking “Maybe we could crash this thing into the ocean, like you said if we redirect it we could save more lives. Crashing or not.”
She offered up an idea. She could hear the roars and nodded to agree to sticking around for now. She moved into position then. After she helped Takara she noticed the man and how he moved the sand disk. Using a method like that to direct an attack could help with aiming… she’d have to look into that in the future. She blinked, noticing the shadow. She looked up then to see the beast. She could feel her heart rate increase as she followed with her eyes to see its eye fixated on something.
“That lady from before….” Dahlia said softly as Yasu appeared in her mind beside her, staring up at her.
‘Think she’s controlling that?’ Yasu questioned her voice in her imagination but now coming from Yasu directly.
“Possibly… it could be lored to her… Can’t tell from here.” She said simply as Dove appeared in her mind standing on a rooftop.
‘Whatever it is, it's gonna bring this whole thing down if the machines don’t fail!’ Dove hollered down her voice acting like Yasu’s as she looked down to meet Dahlia’s eyes. ‘We’ve seen the world crumble down before… Why not have some fun this time?’
‘Dove now is not the time to propose such things! We need to focus on the people relying on her!’ Yasu shouted back at Dove who appeared in front of Yasu then getting up in her face with a devious grin.
‘Everyone’s always relying on her! Who does she rely on? Herself.’ She tilted her head to one side. ‘Her family, random strangers, this city… yeah it needs all of them but she's just a kid. Funny how that works. 14 years old is too young to become a chunin, to beagle to leave anywhere outside of the city alone… to be treated like anything more than a child… but shes still expected to keep her entire family afloat, be the perfect ninja everyone wishes she was instead of who she is naturally… and to help save an entire fuckin city with total stangers.’
The two held eye contact for a long while as Dove twirled, dancing around to put an arm around Dahlia as the beast roared out. Dahlia shifted to brace for the wind that slid her back a few feet all the while Dove then leaned in whispering in Dahlia’s ear.
‘I don’t think it’s fair to be expected to be perfect with that sort of treatment. I think if we're going to likely die here trying to save a drowning city we should be able to be exactly who we want to be.’ Dove started to giggle then.
‘We have a responsibility! Fair or not! Child or not! We have to be what is expected of us even if it kills us!’ Yasu shouted at her.
The two arguing as Dahlia’s mind fought between itself trying to beg for release at the same time of trying to fight for control. Dahlia clutched her head as tears rolled down her face all the while her mind broke further under the stress that only seemed to add onto itself by the second.
“I can’t think like this!” She screamed out, making the two vanish.
She hadn’t even noticed Seigei shouting about what the thing was even doing. She though heard the last part of what he said. It even made her laugh a bit as she smiled looking forward towards the way more beasts would be coming no doubt soon enough.
“We protect them, and then die ourselves in the process.” She smiled a wide and almost wild grin. “But it's okay. After all…. It doesn't matter who we leave broken and alone when we die right?”
She tilted her head to one side like Dove had a bit ago, widening her eyes.
“So long as we bite back the fear and fight on it doesn’t matter. We should focus on sacrificing ourselves for this and totally not potentially lessen the lives lost later.” she pouted a bit “To die in a corner as beasts come to feed on us.”
She then smirked.
“A lovely plan.” She said, shaking her head. “Would mother come home if she knew her monster of a daughter was gone…? I wonder…”
She said the last part to herself as she stared onwards. Her mind cycles through moments with her mother, when they had laid in the stars with her father when she was young, when she had carried her home from late night work, when she had suggested unknowingly that she invented Yasu…. She screamed at her when she begged her to stay with them. When she never said goodbye the last few times, and the books she had written explaining how she had feared her for almost over 9 years….
How much of it had been an act the whole time…?
Her focus shifted to Takara as she explained how others would be taking that thing down and not them. She said how they had to stay here. She said they would flee nor die… the last part was a pretty lie. She took out the last bits from her side before confronting the man from before. While she dealt with him Dahlia walked up to the beasts as many people raced by towards the exit. She kneeled down by one of the bodies tilting her head to one side.
‘Pretty cool right?’ Dove asked, squatting next to her.
‘Dahlia focus…. You need to focus.’ Yasu’s voice requested from her mind, but didn’t appear.
“What are they…” Dahlia wondered out loud before pulling out her tanto and cut into it cutting out one of their eyes with a bit of extra flesh around it to not damage the eye it was a bit crudely done given the tantos size, but she knew how to work her blade well enough to do it the way she had.
She looked at the black blood on her hands silently before standing up. She wondered what could have made the blood black. A lack of oxygen? She sheathed her Tanto after wiping its blade on the side of her pants and held up the eye in front of her own without touching it to her own body. Genetic alteration? She closed her opposite side looking up towards where Yuichi would be still holding the eye there as she tilted her head to one side.
She didn’t know enough about Medical studies to say but it still made her curious. What did it do differently for the body those beasts had if they didn't need the blood to carry the oxygen around. She lowered the eye and her own from where Yuichi was to normal level, turning the eye to face her again. With all the black blood all over it it almost made it look like a totally black eye with nothing but pupils. The image of it on random animals made her smile a bit.
“Cute.” Dahlia could have sworn Yasu was trying to say something but she couldn’t seem to hear her voice right now.
She put the eye in her pocket without thinking much more about it. Yuichi then hollered back that twenty more were coming in a few seconds.
“Good!” She called back, performing several hand seals as she focused her chakra.
She fueled the bonfire inside herself just right as she performed them all. She contemplated raising its strength further but she didn’t need that sort of fire power to destroy these things. A B rank flame would be just enough. She finished the hand seals ending then with closing her dominant hand into a fist. A refined flame blade of 2 ft in length firing off from her hand looking as though she was holding a flame sword. She had wanted to show this off first to Tengoku to show him how far she had come with her chakra control, but she supposed if they were to die here it didn’t quiet matter anymore.
The first of them raced over the wall of beasts just a few feet away from her as her pupils turned further slim. She widened one eye as she grinned wildly. She wasn’t as fast as the others. She however didn’t need that level of speed for what she was going to do against beasts like this. She just needed her coordination. Something Tengoku had been working so hard on for her to perfect. She saw one coming right at her and she ducked under it easily due to her small size. As she did she slashed through its underbelly easily with the hot flame blade that cut it almost as if it was butter.
She moved forward as the next one landed in front of her. She did a front flip onto its shoulders stabbing into its head with the blade before leaping right off it towards one that was making its way off of the large pile. She met it in mid air slashing its limbs that it had been aiming at her. As she collided with her she twisted her body to rotate to be above it, and to have her two feet firmly planted on its stomach just as she slashed again at it’s throat. Her grin grew into a wide and wicked smile as they landed. She kicked off with her feet into a roll that she moved from up onto her feet.
She then spun as two more came at her making each swing a death blow. 5 down… One tackled her down, leading her to giggle wildly. Just before it could fully strike her she stabbed it under its jaw right into its brain. Her pupils nearly shook in excitement as she shoved its body off her using her free hand and feet. She did her share of the twenty. She got back up to her feet and still clenched with the flame blazing off it slightly burning the ground as she got up. She looked over catching Dove dancing about the carnage smiling and laughing.
She shook her head while laughing looking towards the rest of the beasts making sure to move out of the way of any coming out of her with narrow misses. Her smile never left her face, and her stance almost looked relaxed and loose despite the flame that came from her hand. She knew why her father had smiled at the end before he was murdered. He was having fun, and reveling in the thrill of the battle.
