What was next? She had a scroll of C-rank non-elemental techs and already there were a couple at the start that she couldn’t learn. Resonating Echo Drill? Yeah good luck trying to learn that one without a Resonating Echo Speaker equipped. It was a type of item that she didn’t know where she could find one.

So far the only store she had visited was the Cosmic Menagerie. Located in the primary market district and run by the master crafter Kiyoshi. Her big sis Airi had given her money to spend to prepare equipment for herself for the exams….

For her first solo shopping trip ever it had been… an interesting experience to say the least. Even now it was hard for Hibiki to say if it had gone well or not. She hadn’t exactly walked away empty handed, but then she didn't know what sort of equipment to buy in the first place so it was hard to say if she’d done a good job or not. Really she wouldn’t know if she’d prepared too much or too little until the exam itself was already well underway.

It didn’t help that her orders had been placed at practically the last minute. There was a chance that some of the items she had requested, like a large mace to use for intimidation wouldn’t be ready in time.

Getting back to the scroll Hibiki could see that two of the c-level techniques were incredibly similar. To the point they would be almost identical in function if not for them using different hand signs to activate.

The first one was the Hiding in Shadows Technique. It was kind of strange that it could share the same one hand sign as the last technique she had used and yet produce radically different results. Trying to figure out how that worked would likely make her brain explode so Hibiki moved onto her next thought.

Was this the skill Toru had used to emerge from his large Hulk form back at the gennin meeting? That idea automatically gave it extra style points in her mind. Forming the Tiger seal her form melted into the bunnies shadow concealed from sight. Well at least normal sight anyhow. She wasn’t sure what someone with cool eyes like Nao or Airi would see if they tried looking at her.

Being able to conceal herself in shadows like this was insanely cool. The best part was that well there were practically shadows everywhere meaning she’d almost always have a place to hide if she needed to. It would take some fairly special conditions to eliminate shadows entirely in an area. As the saying goes, when there was light so too must there be darkness. It was a fundamental truth of the world.

As she emerged from the bunnies shadow she caught sight of it slipping into the new one her body was casting…. Great now she was going to be paranoid about people lurking around her at all times. Maybe she could learn sensory techniques to prevent that from happening though Hibiki had a feeling it was going to take her a long while to figure out that particular trick.

She never really had enough skill in general to go around. All of the time that should have gone into learning to be better at Ninjutsu or Taijutsu had gone into improving her base stats instead, which was the reason she was a slight cut above what was normal for her class. That trade off was not without a price however as she was severely limited in what techniques she could learn that went beyond class or intelligence restrictions.

Take for example the Earth Dragon Natsuki had attempted to show her. That one less jutsu in her arsenal for the exam, along with a bunch of others he had shown Kaori that Hibiki couldn’t make heads or tails of. Hopefully he’d be willing to show them to her again down the line once she became a bit more skilled.

The lack of Taijutsu was in a way perhaps even more frustrating considering Hibiki’s tendency to start and end fights by punching her way out of trouble. At least with Ninjutsu she could still learn up to C-rank techniques on her own even if she was unskilled. Taijutsu was only D-rank in comparison which meant she couldn’t even learn her Village’s primary style, the Strong fist.

Even the fighting styles she could still learn like the Arhat fist would be less effective until she earned that black belt. It was a total pain in the butt since she couldn’t fight at her full potential the way she was now.

Hibiki had reached C-rank and was on the cusp of gaining B-rank. If she put her mind to it she could work out those flaws and learn to become skilled in both Taijutsu and Ninjutsu fairly quickly. The only reason she hadn’t was that she had a nagging feeling that she couldn’t fully explain. A feeling that those skill points could be put to better use elsewhere. At those thoughts the Bunny emerged from her shadows and rubbed against her leg in a show of consolation.

Hibiki had no way of knowing but she had more than one bloodline lurking in her veins, slumbering until it could be awakened. She didn’t know much about her parents. They had died when she was still very young. Most of their records were lost in the fire that had burned the Clan Outpost practically to the ground.

Perhaps one of her parents, her mother or father had come from the outside. That wouldn’t have been too strange. After all marriages strictly between clan members might keep the their lineage pure but consistent incest between cousions and such would actually only weaken the clan over time.

One generation wasn’t a big deal, but do it for three or four and any inherent flaws within their genetics would only become magnified. For all she knew that meant if she had kids with another Tetsudashi they could come out with an even greater weakness to fire than was usual.

Or maybe one of her parents had just been an ordinary joe. Classless people were far more common than ones with advanced bloodlines. Hibiki didn’t know much of anything about genetics but maybe her second clan was simply recessive. Something that didn’t always emerger and could skip a generation or two before showing up again.

Regardless of where this second bloodline had come from, the point was that it was lurking below the surface just waiting for the right circumstances to manifest itself. Whether that happened before the exam was as much of a question of luck as it was skill.

There were a lot of factors at play behind this second blooding being able to come to full fruition. The main one being if Hibiki would have the skill or skills available to activate it, but it also would come down to how much the bunny blessed her once everything was said and done. A lot hinged on the rolls of a dice that she wasn’t even consciously aware of…. If she rolled well she would have more options available to her, and if not, oh well at least she had tried.

Hibiki gave the bunny a gentle pat on the head hoping that some of it’s luck would rub off on her since things had been pretty stingy so far with one exception. The only other thing she could do to counter her losing streak was by trying her best to train and hopefully gain more and more rolls in the process. That was a pretty Hibiki like way of going about things, tackling the problem with pure brute force.

Well she had learned Hidding in shadows so now it was time for Hiding in Surface. She wasn’t quite sure of what the point was having both when they worked so similarly. Maybe having extra options was the point then. If you found yourself in a situation where one didn’t work for some reason you’d still be able to use the other. Would something like that even happen during the exam? Heck would it happen outside it…. Still she supposed it was better to be safe than sorry.

Using the Ram hand sign her body quickly merged with the surface of the ground she had been standing on. Honestly speaking it kind of felt slow moving around like this. At least with the other technique there was potential to piggyback off someone else. Even the mole technique Natsuki had shown her seemed quicker. Obviously this was not something to use for winning a race.

Popping back out from the surface of the ground Hibiki let out a long sigh. That last technique had just felt so extraneous, she couldn’t see herself using it much, or like at all really. Hopefully of the remaining three techniques on the scroll at least one of them would be a winner she could put to use more frequently.

Let’s see next on the plate was Focused Amplification which had some interesting implications. It could boost lower level techniques. From E up to B rank, but only for one element of the user's choice making them stronger.

That presented an interesting dilemma for poor Hibiki. She had three options to choose from, and once selected her choice would be forever locked in, unable to be changed. Should she go the most orthodox route and pick Doton? That was her primary element after all. The one she knew the most techniques for. But maybe going with her bloodline would be a better option.

Of course there was always the third choice and going non-elemental Just thinking about which one could be best for her was enough to bring on a headache. Choices, choices. She didn’t even realize there was a fourth hidden option, not learning the jutsu at all yet and waiting to pick up another element down the line.

That being said, her learning more elements was a pretty big “what if” itself. At C-rank she’d already gained or used half the amount of skills she could possibly acquire within her lifetime. Assuming she lived to reach X-class she would gain the other half which meant what she could learn was pretty limited if she was intent on following through and mastering Taijutsu and Ninjutsu down the line. Not to mention Sensory…

That didn’t leave her much wiggle room to work with. Especially since her second bloodline could potentially take up more than one skill itself depending on what it ended up being. At best she could learn perhaps one, maybe two additional elements, precluding gaining any from implants which was a whole other kettle of fish.

If you asked Hibiki what implant she would like she wouldn’t really have a proper answer for you. It wasn’t like she knew much about any clans in particular to begin with. Heck she barely knew much about her own clan, the Tetsudashi.

The only other clans she would be able to name from memory were the Hyuga since her big sister Airi and her best friend Nao were members. She knew that they had cool looking, piercing eyes and could mess with people’s chakra.

Them and the Uthiha clan Innothenthe had mentioned belonging to alongside her late father, one of the former Hokages. She didn’t have a clue what they could do, just that they had a pretty funny sounding name.

If she knew more she’d probably name the Scorch clan for starters. Not because she was interested in the potential to do even more damage and potentially one shot kill people but because of their resistance to heat which had the potential to negate her weakness towards fire.

After that in second place was maybe the swift clan. Being able to run faster sounded pretty useful to her given her general rushdown style of fighting. The faster she could reach a foe the quicker she could end a fight. Plus it didn’t matter how much stronger an oppoante was if they couldn’t hit you.

Other potential picks would have included the Akimichi clan. Why? Because they ate a lot which was perfect for a walking human food disposal system like Hibiiki. Well that and the ability to turn their bodies giant sized. The idea of striding across the battlefield as a giant steel titan was very appealing. The Sage only knew how much she’d be able to lift then if strength was in proportion to her size.

Beyond that maybe she would select the Nara clans in hopes that it would provide her an intelligence boost that could fix the brain damage she had undergone. The doctors had all told her it was irreversible, that no amount of training or experience could right what had been wronged but what did they know?

After that maybe she’d go Uzumaki or Senju. Having increased stamina could never hurt after all, especially since her pool had stopped growing on account of her lack of mental energy that Toru had talked about. And with the latter she was practically half way there with her doton element. Wouldn’t that be funny if that was her second bloodline? Somehow Hibiki had the feeling that wasn’t the case.

Anyhow those were all just shots in the dark. Her chances of obtaining any implants were slim to begin with. That would virtually require hurting people and she didn’t have a bone of malice in her body.

Saying that she lacked malice was a tad misleading. It wasn’t to say that Hibiki was harmless either. Just that she didn’t go looking around intentionally trying to cause trouble. If trouble came to her she would have no trouble putting it down with extreme prejudice. The thing that made her a little scary was that she was the kind of person that could rip someone else apart with an innocent smile on her face. Unaware of the full implications of what she had done.

If anything her lack of malic combined with her prodigious strength possessed a bit of a problem for the exams. If anyone looked at her and assumed she would be harmless they would be in a world of hurt once fists connected with their body.

Airi had ordered them not to kill anyone during the exam unless one of their own were killed first. That might… prove a challenge to live up to since Hibiki was not very good at regulating her own strength or holding back. If she came across someone with a low enough constitution she could easily snap their neck by complete accident.

She’d asked Toru for advice about an item that could help in that regard but that was one of the few things he hadn’t really been able to help her with that day. She’d just have to pray that maybe one of the items she had purchased from Kiyoshi could do the job for her making her fists a little less lethal then normal. Ironic considering most people wanted weapons to make them stronger, not weaker.

Hibiki also had the option of trying to learn better control but that seemed like a pipe dream. I mean she could figure it out for everyday life easily enough. She had pet those puppies the other day without hurting them after all. But in the heat of battle one of the first things to slip was self discipline.

She’d already gone and used her bloodline twice in friendly sparring matches, something that was supposed to be forbidden. If she’d slipped up on that it would be all too easy to forget the concept of restraint in the middle of a fight and belt someone with her full unfettered force.

Actually one of the techniques she was intending to learn today was to make her hit even harder then she could already…. but was that really a good idea. She could already floor all but the most hardy of gennin in very short order. Even Kaori wearing Earth armor had said that it was only a matter of time until Hibiki tore through her defense. The only person her age taht she couldn’t really hurt reliably was a girl she hadn’t met yet named Mae.

If she ended up with hitting just about anyone else at the exams with A-rank or above strength she would likely turn them into a messy pulp of squirming flesh and blood since most Gennin had an average constitution of C or lower.

Faced with a nearly impossible decision Hibiki had let her mind wander far and wide in a vain attempt to avoid making a choice. Ahh fine whatever, she supposed she’d just go with earth release when it came to which element to enhance with Focused Amplification. After all the amount of B and below steel release jutsu she could learn was extremely limited.

She only had two steel techniques to her name… actually make that three. She’d forgotten for a hot second that the impervious armor counted as one of them since using it came like second nature to her and because of the fact that it didn’t require any hand signs.

Arbitrarily she picked the first doton jutsu that Kaori had helped teach her. The Earth Release: Earth Shore Return technique. Forming the seals Ox, Hare, Dragon she slapped on the snake seal at the end as an extra addition before slamming the palms of hands against the ground hard enough to leave indentations. Good thing she didn’t have to worry about cleaning up after herself since this field was abandoned anyway.

Immediately it was apparent to the naked eye that the Focused Amplification had done its job. The wall that had formed was bigger and tougher looking then the ones she had conjured in the past. The soil the wall was composed of was a darker shade of blackish brown, an obvious indication of its increased strength.

To think that all it took was one extra hand sign thrown in at the end and she could achieve radically different results. The more her coordination increased the less difference it would make to squeeze one more in.

Hopefully she had made the right choice because it was too late to go back and change it now. Moving on to the next move on the scroll she saw that it was one involving Shuriken. Something she’d neglected to bring along….

Huh, hadn’t she bought some the other day at Kiyoshi’s? Maybe, maybe not. Thankfully unlike with the resonating speaker this was a much easier fix. Severa old shuriken had been left scattered across the old training grounds. They were rusted with age but still serviceable in a training capacity if not out in the field.
