    Secret Training Empty Secret Training

Post by Hibiki Mon Apr 29, 2024 1:27 am

As the sun dipped low on the horizon, casting long shadows across the abandoned training field, a young teenage girl arrived, her presence silent and determined. Dressed in traditional garb, her black attire blended seamlessly with the shadows, while her eyes, sharp and focused, scanned the surroundings for any sign of danger.

The training field, once a bustling hub of activity, now lay deserted and overgrown with weeds. Crumbling stone structures and faded wooden targets bore witness to the countless hours of practice and dedication that once filled this place, long since abandoned ever since the opening of the grand training facility.

With a sense of purpose, the young girl stepped out onto the worn earth, her footsteps light and sure. Though the field may be abandoned, its memories were alive with the echoes of past training sessions, each one a stepping stone on the long journey to mastery.

As Hibiki moved through the field, she recalled the lessons burned into her mind by the Hades scientist. The hours spent honing her skills, perfecting her technique, and quote unquote ''mastering'' the art of stealth and agility.

With the exams coming she felt a sense of purpose like never before. A burning need to succeed and prove herself.   Yes she could stay a genin for the last of her life and her big sis would doubtlessly be happy for her, but then she’d just be coasting on her laurels.

She wanted to be useful. To be praised. She was strong but was she strong enough? If another bijuu came along would she be able to do anything to actually help this time or would she be stuck on the sidelines once more?   Hibiki rarely felt fear but right now she was afraid of not being able to change.

It felt only yesterday since Hibiki had signed up for the exam and yet they were already around the corner.  During the in between time she had experienced matches against several of her fellow gennin and found herself…. Lacking.

Nao had beaten her fairly decisively.   He’d said that she'd given him a good match but she half suspected he was just saying that to be kind.  He was such a perfect gentleman she doubted he had a mean bone in his body.   Kaori meanwhile had practically matched her blow for blow.   And then there was Natsuki who was amazing with jutsu and Taru who was so smart he was practically a wizard.

She hadn’t had the chance to witness Sera and Innocence in action. Only the sage knew what they might bring to the table.  But if they were even a quarter as good as the others that could still spell trouble for Hibiki as she was now. She had to get…. Better.

Sitting down cross legged on the ground in a spot where the grass wasn’t quite as overgrown as the rest, Hibiki spread out a few scrolls she had brought with her.  They were leftover scraps that she had managed to scourge up by asking around for ones that people didn’t need anymore.  Most people treated higher ranked techniques like treasures, but you’d be surprised how much people were willing to share when it came to D and even some C rank stuff.

Maybe to an experienced Jounin those types of moves where only beginner level to being. Hardly worth consideration.  But for Hibiki every one she could get her hands on was more precious than gold.

She’d already pre-screened the scrolls she’d received back at her apartment into roughly three categories.  Ones she could mostly read, Ones that she could only partly make out and ones that she couldn’t decipher at all.   Needless to say she’d only brought the former with her.  Right now she didn’t have the time left to be banging her head against a figurative wall trying to make a technique work when she only had part of the information on it.

She’d learned that lesson from  trying to practice doton jutsu from a beginners guide when she could only make out the pictograms for the hand signs and very little else.  If Kaori hadn’t come along to help her then she would have probably been stuck trying to perform that one jutsu for hours with no results.

Of course with enough concentration she could push aside the fog that perpetually covered her mind for a short time.  Perhaps a few minutes at best.  Long enough to read the rest of the beginners pamphlet she had brought with her that day. Not that it would do her a fat lot of good in the long run.  Anything that she could understand only with her mind clear was something that would be scrambled the second the fog rolled back in.

Considering the intense concentration required to keep the fog at bay it was hardly suitable for a fight.  Maybe she could still pull it off with a bit of luck but all it would take was one hit for things to slip.   Considering how much her fighting style relied on being tanky, it seemed like a very dubious prospect to rely on.  The idea of losing a fight because she’d forgotten how to cast the jutsu she needed to win in the middle of a match was just plain embarrassing.

There were of course other jutsu she wished to learn but the issue was them was either a problem of access or a lack of skill.   Much as she would learn to perform more of the Tetsudashi clan techniques for most of those she would need both a teacher and to get better at casting ninjutsu in general before that could happen.   Due to her…. Mental deficiencies she pretty much couldn’t learn anything above C-rank on her own.   Even if she could overcome that obstacle she couldn’t learn above C-rank anyhow thanks to the lack of the ninjtusu skill which had prevented her from picking up a few nifty techniques already like that Stone dragon thing Natsuki had demonstrated for her or the ability to cover her skin with stone instead of steel.

Luck however had not completely abandoned her.  Among the scrolls she had brought with her was one from her clan.  Either it had been pilfered during one of the previous occupations of Iwa or a refugee had brought it over.  The fact there had been multiple instances of both making it hard to pin down more specifics was kind of depressing but at least it came with the upside of giving her some much needed guidance.

First up was the Impervious Tendrils technique.  It seemed simple enough with only four hand signs to perform.  Dragon, Tiger, Rat, Dog.  Hibki’s hands flashed through the sequence as rapidly as she could manage. It wasn’t bad for a gennin but she wasn’t about to be putting the higher ranks to shame her with her sign speed.  A puff of smoke engulfed her body and the next thing she knew she had four extra tentacle-like appendages sprouting from her back, wiggling around at her command.

Someone more dirty minded might immediately go to some more… unconventional uses for the jutsu. Hibiki was far too pure for that, only thinking that having extra limbs was kind of neat.  It was almost like she was that Doc Oak character from that one comic book she had read about a spider related super-hero.   The fact she could essentially throw a bunch of extra punches at once was extremely nifty as far as she was concerned.

Idly Hibiki wondered if their was a way the tendrils could be used in place of her hands for making hand signs.  Though the fact they lacked fingers make that prospect somewhat dubious.  Then again given how many tendrils she could produce at a time maybe there was a way to one tendril in place of an individual finger so that five together formed a hand.

Just thinking about the coordination that would be required to move them uniformly enough to pull that kind of stunt off was enough to make her head hurt.  Maybe someone who was really good at manipulating lots of things at once like a puppeteer could pull it off but for now it remained a pipe dream for her.

The tendrils could last for a few minutes without pumping more chakra into them but Hibiki allowed them to dissolve back into the air early since she had other things to work on tonight. Moving on to the second jutsu and final jutsu on the Tetsudashi scroll.   Or at least the last one that was still legible enough for her to make out.   The rest was torn and moth eaten from neglect.

The technique she was practicing, the Dragonfly Swarm required only two hand signs making it fairly easy for her to remember.   Ox, Dragon.  Her hands flashed from one sign to the other activating the jutsu.  It was actually kind of a little creepy how it caused a small hord of bugs to crawl out from under her skin.  With trembling wings they began to take off from her body, circling around her as she considered what to do with them.

Being bugs Individually each of the dragonflies were fairly weak, collectively however they could be quite the menace.  With a wave of her hand Hibiki sent them flying towards a worn down and rotting wooden target dummy which they quickly swarmed and tore to shreds.

Overall Hibiki rated this technique as fairly useful. It was nice for her to have some ranged options available, especially since she didn’t exactly care kunai or shuriken around with her… perhaps that was something she ought to rectify in the future.  It was a shame though that was really all they could be used for.  The bugs weren't real flesh and blood but steel so she couldn’t see through their eyes or hear through their ears even thought she could control them remotely to an extent as long as they remained within her perception.

Considering she had originally been from the land of stone it was a shame she didn’t have more Iwagakure exclusives available to her. At one point the village had the scroll in their vaults but Raijin had pilfered those so that wasn’t an option anymore.   Maybe someone else in the village had a copy but Hibiki wouldn’t even know where to begin asking.

It was a shame really.  She was sure there had to be at least one technique in that scroll that was of the level she was up to learning on her own. One that might have been useful for her in the exams. But well there was no use pining over something that she couldn’t have.

As for the Konoha exclusive scroll there wasn’t a chance she’d be allowed access at her current rank even if it hadn’t been stolen as well.  There was a rumor going around that her big sister Airi was a sort of living scroll. A person who knew every jutsu that it had contained and could rewrite the whole thing from scratch if needed.

Hibiki could buy that store. Her Big sis was strong and impressive after all. She would have asked Airi for help with her training but then Airi was so busy with being Hokage and dealing with all the revelvant paperwork that Hibiki couldn’t bring herself to bother the older girl unless it was for something that was actually important.

She was simply going to have to settle for learning the more common and mundane less exclusive kinds of techniques tonight.  The remaining scrolls Hibiki had contained things that were well universal for lack of a better term.  Essentially anyone could learn them, presuming they met the minimum requirements.

There were some C-rank ninjtusu that Hibiki simply couldn’t use like the body elimination technique because her intelligence was too low to pick it up.  So much for a quick way to get rid of evidence.  She couldn’t use the Summon Spying Technique since she hadn’t signed a summon contract yet.  Those were the breaks.

Now that Hibiki was done with her bloodline techniques it was time to move on to the next thing.  She’d picked up a bunch of doton jutsu from her doton buddies Natsuki and Karoi so Hibiki wasn’t feeling a need to focus on those that much, at least not at the moment.

That left three categories for Jutsu she could still learn.  Non-elemental Ninjtusu.  Taijutsu and Genjutsu.  Given that Hibiki hated illusions with a burning passion she was loath to learn any at all. The only reason she was bothering to try was that sometimes you needed to fight fire with fire.   The only question was should she be a good girl and get her preverbal vegetables out of the way first or save the stuff she didn’t want to eat for last.

Without warning her stomach rumbled.  All this thinking about food was making her hungry.   Taking a raition bar out of her pocket she unwrapped it then stuck one end in her mouth and began to chew.  It wasn’t what she would call outright disgusting. She had eaten far worse as a test subject but the flavor still left a lot to be desired.

What she wouldn’t give for a hot bowl of ramen right about now.  Noa hadn’t been kidding about it tasting good.  Not only did the soup contain a lot of flavor it was fairly filling to boot.  Hibiki ate enough sometimes that the other people at her apartment called her a bootless hole, but even she would be satisfied after three or so bowls, well assuming it also came with a riceball on the side.

Polishing off the ration bar in seconds Hibik went back to work on her training.   She figured she might as well get her vegetables off of her plate first since the amount available for her to learn wasn’t exactly what one would describe as a long list.  Of the two D-rank illusions that she hadn’t learned, one required at least D-rank intelligence to cast, which meant it was out of the picture for her.

That left the Demonic Illusion: Hell's Viewing technique.  Even just the name left a bad taste in her mouth.   An illusion that made people see the one thing in their heart they really didn’t…. Talk about demonic indeed.   Hibiki was afraid to even think of what she would see if it was ever cast on her.

Most of her life until coming to this village had been a living hell.  She had been tortured and experimented on.  Starved and beaten.  Forced to take part in brutal training.  To become a child soldier during a war….  She had done so many, many terrible things.

The only reason she could survive,  that she could be so bloody optimistic and naive, was that she was simply too dumb to process the full implications of everything that had happened to her.   That she could never dwell on any one thing for long before it slipped from her mind.  This was the sole blessing from the  damage that had been done to her brain which was otherwise a curse, one that could never fully be lifted.

It was ironic how even this one simple illusion could be a potentially fatal one to her.  Physically Hibiki was tough but her mind was fragile.  Almost like a house of cards or a jenga tower just on the verge of collapse with one wrong pull.    If someone took the time to charge the Hell’s view for long enough it would shatter her mind as surely as a mirror struck by a sledgehammer.  Leaving behind fragments of her sanity scattered across the void.

She had a slim chance of survival.   The fact she had been living in a good environment meant that her mind had stabilized slightly, putting her a slight cut above her peers in the E-rank intelligence department. If she was exceptionally lucky she might just end up in the hospital for a while.

Her only other chance was to have her mind focused when the illusion struck.  Since that temporarily boosted her intelligence it would soften the blow. At least in theory at least.  In practice that was a long shot at best.    If her focus wasn’t sharped before the genjutsu kicked in it would be…difficult to say the least to turn on.  Let alone keeping maintaining that focus while the mental damage was being done.

Say if you got punched. Would you be able to maintain your concentration?   If she slipped… if her concentration broke her mind would likely break right alone with it. She’d been rendered into a drooling vegetable.  Even if the meat survived could you truly be said to be alive if the mind was gone?

Speaking of vegetables, that was enough digressing for the moment.  She’d put off learning the technique for as long as she could by letting her mind wander but it was time to buckle down and get things done.

At least the Hell’s viewing was simple when it came to hand signs. It was another jutsu with only two. Then again Hibiki wasn’t sure she’d learn a single one that had more than four either.  She formed the Snake and Rat signs only to realize she had a small problem… To work she had to send her chakra at her opponent and right now she was alone.  How was she supposed to know her casting had worked?

As fate would have it,  a random rabbit hopped out of the long grass.  Figuring it was as good a target as any Hibiki pulsed her chakra at it.   For a long moment nothing seemed to happen, but then the rabbit collapsed onto the ground foaming from it’s mouth.
