Whoops. That had worked better then Hibiki had expected for her first try. Rushed over to the rabbit she gently poked it with a finger and was relieved to see it was still breathing. Thank the sage. The last thing she’d wanted was to inadvertently kill it… She’d done plenty of that already.

Of course it was tempting to try and make rabbit stew but Hibiki wasn’t exactly what you might call an excellent cook, nor was she experienced in field dressing to remove the fur. Besides it was far too cute looking to harm just so she could fill her stomach a little. Especially when she had plenty of food available to her back at her apartment building. Even if her fridge was empty the matron of the cafeteria would surely have something waiting for her.

Coming too the rabbit bit down on Hibiki’s finger… hard. Surprisingly hard in fact, enough to penetrate her extra touch skin and make her hand finch back. She would have glared at it for that insult but well she figured fair was fair. She had been the one to strike the first blow.

Oddly enough after biting her the Rabbit was still sticking around. That was strange, weren't they typically shy creatures? She’d tried to pat another wild one once upon spotting it only for it to run for the hills after she’d taken only one step towards it. Maybe something about this one was different. Something about it was special.

“I ain’t got no carrots to feed you.” Hibiki said using a double negative rather than speaking the phrase correctly. She figured the only reason the rabbit was still her was that it was looking to be fed but apparently that wasn’t the case as it shook its head no. It was almost as if it could understand what she was saying. If that was true then it was smarter then your average rabbit, perhaps even smarter than her.

“You’re welcome to stick around. Just…. Try and stay safe. I wouldn’t want you to get caught in the crossfire.” said Hibiki. Not their was another person around to exchange fire with like it was a sparring match but the sentiment was the same. Some of the jutsu she wanted to cast could make quick mince meat of the creature if it got clipped by them.

Nodding in agreement the rabbit picked up one of the stray scrolls in its mouth that Hibiki had left scattered across the ground and brought it over to her, depositing it into her lap. Maybe the damn thing really was smarter than her if it was outright suggesting what techniques she should learn next like this.

“This better be good…” Muttered Hibiki as she unraveled the scroll to find that it contained three techniques she had never heard before… well closer to two techniques and that was closer to a chakra exercise. From what she could make out one of those techniques put that exercise to more practical use… One that might come in handy should she run up against any dojutsu users in the exam.

“Hah, Nao will never see this coming.” Hibiki exclaimed, rubbing her hands together in excitement. Or so she said. The technique was virtually harmless, it couldn’t do anything lasting damage wise…. So why did she feel so reluctant to use it on her friend? Was it because he was her best sparring partner with Karoi being a close second or was it for some other reason Hibiki couldn’t currently phantom?

Maybe it would be better to save as a trump card. Yeah that was the ticket. It was something to only be used against him if they happened to be matched up against each other in the exams. Not something to be used in a casual sparring match. Or at least that was her excuse for why she wasn’t going to use it on him the next time they had a friendly fight.

Holding out her hand, the same one the bunny had nipped earlier Hibiki concentrated on the chakra within her making it flow from the navel in her chest down her veins and into her palm where it manifested into a small orb, slightly larger than your average marble. It wasn’t the biggest she could make the orb, but she was going for function over size here.

The orb nestled in her hand glowed with a bright but gentle light. Straightly despite the illumination it wasn’t warm at all the same way a lightbulb would be. Overall it was a fairly useful for communication between two or more people in the middle of the night… that is as long as you didn’t mind giving away your position.

Oh….. Oh crud. What if someone on patrol spotted her because of the light coming from the Fusee orb? Would she get in trouble? It was pretty late at night, not that the city had a curfew as far as Hibiki was aware. Still this was pretty much an abandoned area so her presence here might seem a bit sus.

She’d come here because she’d wanted to train in secret. The Grand training facility was always crowded. If she trained there the other Gennin in the exam might see her which would ruin the surprise. She wanted to show off for them during the exams and have them praise her for her efforts but it would all be ruined if she was taken in as a suspect for questioning.

Panicking Hibiki tried to think of what she could do to either get rid of or conceal the orb of light. It was glowing so brightly that she didn’t think putting it into the tall grass would help much. Maybe she could have the bunny eat it for her? Holding down the orb to it, the bunny brought its ever twitching nose to sniff the object before turning aside its head in disinterest.

Ok that was a bust what was her next plan? If she had been thinking more calmly she would have realized she could have simply crushed the orb by squeezing it with her bare hands. It was only an E-rank technique after all which meant it was on the more fragile side and easily damaged.

Another possibility was to bury it. A simple task with the various doton jutsu under her command. Too bad Hibiki was too panicked to think of that either. The more she panicked the more she felt like her mind was going blank making it more and more difficult to think.

Hearing a noise which was most likely just a gust of wind she thought that someone was approaching the training grounds and decided to get rid of the orb in the most extreme and ridiculous way possible for someone that wanted to avoid drawing attention to herself. Forming the Dragon hand sign she sent a surge of charka into the orb overcharging it to the max.

With a soundless roar it took off like a bolt of lightning from her hand, launching itself high into the sky and exploding like a firework, releasing a bright flash of light with a very loud and very conspicuous bang.

Oh man I’ve done it now. The feeling of dread washed over her. There was no way on the sage’s green earth that SOMEBODY wasn’t going to notice the signal she had just set off. Still the area was pretty much deserted. It wasn’t like they would be able to respond at the drop of a dime right? RIGHT?

Maybe if she grabbed the scrolls she’d left scattered around her and made a break for it she could still get away. Scooping down to pick one up she was dismayed to see that not all of them were quite within arms reach. Did she have no choice but to abandon them? Was that really a good idea?

Just as Hibiki was beginning to panic all over again she felt a tap on her leg and looked down to see the Rabbit pressing its right paw against her. She blinked her mind going blank for a second before realizing that it was trying to tell her something as it gestured to the edge of the training field with its other paw.

There was some kind of weird looking paper laying on the grass. Unlike the rest of the equipment on the field which was old and in various states of disrepair the ink on the paper was still wet as if it had only just recently been placed there. Where had this strange object come from… and more importantly who had placed it?

Forgetting the need to flee for the moment Hibiki walked up to the paper in order to inspect it only to bash her head. She had run straight into some kind of invisible force that she couldn’t see. Reaching out a hand slowly she touched the edges of the force causing a ripple effect to appear across its surface for a brief moment revealing a forcefield.

“Did you do this?” she asked the bunny as she was currently lacking any other suspects. The rabbit stood on its hind legs and nodded it’s head at her, strangely proud of itself for it’s accomplishment. If only it could speak it would boast about what a good job it had done cutting off the training field from the outside environment.

Hibiki frowned, not quite understanding what the bunny was trying to accomplish with the forcefield. Was it some kind of barrier to trap her inside the training grounds…. That seemed kind of far-fetched given how friendly the rabbit was being with her, what with it sticking to her side like glue and providing her wordless advice on what techniques to learn.

Pressing against the barrier with a bit more strength Hibiki was surprised to find that her hand was beginning to pass through it. It was almost as if the barrier was made of some kind of gelatin.

Hibiki quickly relocated to the other side of the forcefield just to reassure herself that she indeed wasn’t trapped. She’d been in more than enough cages for one lifetime thank you very much. Now that her freedom was ensured she began to ponder what to do next. Continue to investigate or flee before the night patrol arrived. That’s when she noticed the Rabbit inside the barrier kicking up a fuss. It was hopping around like mad, its mouth opening and closing trying to communicate something to her but strangely she couldn’t hear anything.

“Could it be….” Hibiki mutter to herself as she pressed her hand against the barrier to test if it was enterable from the other side and not some kind of one way type of deal. Sure enough she could go through it and once she entered she could hear the bunny clucking up a storm.

“This barrier… It doesn’t stop people but sound.” Hibiki deduced to which the bunny settled down and nodded at her. She felt pretty smart for figuring that one out, even if she’d only managed with the rabbit’s assistance. If it hadn’t been making a fuss it would have taken her a long longer to clue into the fact it was an isolation barrier to keep the noise from the training field from reaching the outside world.

“You placed this to help me didn’t you?” Asked Hibiki rhetorically as she bent down and scooped up the bunny, cradling it in her arms gently. “Thank you.” she whispered to it, resolving to find it a good carrot once she was finished with her business here.

Placing the bunny back down again Hibiki decided to resume her training now that she felt secure in the knowledge that no patrols would be coming. It was getting kind of on the late side. Usually she’d be in bed already by now. What was that expression, early to bed early to rise?

This was one time she couldn’t afford to sleep. Not without putting in at least a little bit more effort. It was hard to tell at this point which minor bit of extra work was going to make that difference between success or failure. If she didn’t get it done now who knew when the next chance would be. It wasn’t like they held the exams on anything resembling a regular schedule.

Of course keeping on task wasn’t easy. There were constant distractions like when her stomach had rumbled earlier or sage forbid nature called. Plus she could only train for so long and so much before she ran out of energy. If she went to the point that she crashed from exhaustion things could get dicey. Sleeping out here in the open probably wasn’t the best idea… Hibiki was hardy but she could still potentially catch a chill.

She’d been told more than once that she was too stupid to catch a cold but she wasn’t too interested in putting that particular theory to the test. Your nose getting stuffed up with snot sounded like a miserable experience.

Anyhow next on the docket was to try and make like a Cat and produce some claws. Or as some might call it Cat Scratch fever since she was planning on testing this new technique out on a one of the remaining training dummies using it as a sort of makeshift scratching post. Oddly enough this one didn’t require any hand seals… just concentrating chakra into the tips of your fingers to promote the nails to grow at unnaturally fast speeds.

Apparently she could do this with her toes as well but she wasn’t sure how that was supposed to work without ruining her boots. Maybe if she was wearing sandals instead that could be an option.

Flexing her fingers which now had short talons attached to them Hibiki took a swipe at the nearest training dummy as she had originally planned, mentally jotting down the results in her mind.

The results were well, less than overwhelming. She could see five thin lines scratched into the dummy. They weren’t particularly deep. Enough to make someone bleed perhaps but far from fatal since unless she happened to strike a critical spot like the jugular. A regular kunai would seemed more useful if what she wanted to do was cut someone, but then there were places where weapons weren’t allowed so growing some could be useful.

If nothing else the claws would be handy for cutting herself free if someone ever managed to tie her up since her captors would be extremely unlikely to account for extendable claws when binding her.

The claws done with Hibiki still had a long list of other non-elemental jutsu to work on. Next up was the Haze clone…. An illusion that wasn’t a Genjtusu? How the heck did that work? She’d thought she had finished with illusions for now so how had another one snuck into her scrolls?

Forming the Dog and then tiger signs with a sour face Hibiki produced ten copies of herself with a single puff of smoke. Unlike the Shadow clones Nao had shown her, these had no substance. Attacks would simply pass through them, allowing them to act as a distraction while she attacked from a blind spot.

Freaking illusions man. Hopefully that was the last of them and no others had snuck their way into her scrolls unsuspectingly. Hibiki just wanted to be able to run up and punch people. She was typically way too straightforward for such explicit slights of hand. Usually minor bluffs wass about the best she could manage, like pretending she was going to throw a punch and then throwing a kick instead. Frankly she wouldn’t want to use any illusion or genjutsu unless she was absolutely and truly desperate.

Would something really come up in the exams that pushed her to that point? That seemed unlikely but it wasn’t entirely impossible either. She’d have to be losing pretty bad to even consider them and at that point she might be better off surrendering rather then push herself to use such distasteful means.

Ok enough about that. Shaking her head to clear out those kinds of thoughts Hibiki moved onto the next jutsu, the Temporary Paralysis Technique. This one seemed handy for when you wanted to capture someone and take them into custody. First she would form the Tiger hand seal then place her middle and index finger against either the targets spine, eyes or head….

That seemed simple enough. Her eyes wandered over to the rabbit wondering if she could use it as a test subject once again only for it to stand up and cross its paws in front of its chest. A crystal clear gesture of telling her heck no. Too bad her coordination wasn’t high enough to do the more advanced version which only required eye contact.

Hibiki settled for the training dummy she had scratched earlier instead. It wouldn’t tell her if her attempts to cast the paralysis technique had been effective or not but at least it would simulate trying to touch the right spot on a target well enough… Or maybe not considering that these training dummies couldn’t move to dodge.

No wonder people had abandoned this field for the grand training facility. With the advanced technology inside it could simulate something much closer to real world conditions. Hibiki wondered if it even included a battle simulator mode that allow to face off against replicas of past foes.

Of course no replica could ever match the real thing. She could see it now, Someone training against a copy of a famous wanted man like Rajin or Chen and getting a big head because of it. Maybe they would even try and challenge the real deal only to get absolutely destroyed when they discovered the genuine article was stronger, tougher and smarter than any mere simulation.

You might be wondering how Hibiki, who couldn’t even recognize most Kage without being told, knew of these two men. The answer was simple enough, they were so famous… or rather infamous that even She could recognize their names. Raijin had pulled a string of Village Vault heists making him perhaps the most successful thief in history while Chen had leveled the entire of Sunagakure and butchered all its people. With a bounty of six million ryo on his head their wasn’t a man, woman or child who wouldn’t recognize him

What would Hibiki do if she came across either of these illustrious but dangerous individuals? Run like heck of course. Just because she was intellegecually challenged didn’t make her stupid. She knew she couldn’t stack up against monsters like those. Her priority would be to attempt escape, assuming she would be able to in the first place.

She was good… For a Gennin. There was a reason she was taking the Chunin exams after all. Speaking strictly of her combat potential she could bat a little above her rank class just going by her raw stats. It was the tactical and leadership parts that were in question since her low intelligence didn’t exactly lend itself to making smart strategic decisions.
