Turning his head toward Sero, Valen would listen intently. He was apparently satisfactory in the ninjutsu department. At least for the moment. He would obviously have to progress, but frankly he had never been as drawn to ninjutsu as he had been toward other things. He learned it because it was expected of him and it was useful. He would probably pick it up eventually but for the moment he was content with his current skill level and didn't really need to be able to use stronger techniques. At least not in his eyes. No, what he was really drawn to was the sword. When Sero told him that they would be moving on to test his other talents the young man would follow up to a practice ring. A circle in the sand demarking the area in which one was able to fight. He was never particularly gifted with words, however numbers and such things he seemed to have an innate ability in. For example he could tell at a glance that the circle was exactly five meters across. Enough for two people to fight, although if larger weapons got involved they might become too close together. What word was that? To be enclosed into a tight space with someone? Confined? Intimate? Intimate, it was that one. The ring would become too 'intimate' if weapons too large got involved.
Still the idea of testing his swordplay appealed to him and one could see this by the small, very small, smile on his features at the prospect. It was very little more than a slight upturning of the corners of his mouth. But it was a smile nonetheless. Still, it would be the first one he had shown in days. His mind went back to the first time he had ever held a sword. It had been during his enslavement. It was an accident, but he remembered it clearly. The cloying scent of blood in the cabin below decks. The sweet, metallic scent of blood laced with. The deafening sound of cannons and the heart pounding splintering of wood as cannons fired and cannon balls blasted through hulls. The rowers were all chained beneath the ship, on benched with their long oars in hand. They had been pulled in now, to prevent them from being shorn off by the impact of the other ship. Slaves were expected to reextend the oar back out and try to knock out the other ships rowers. It reduced maneuverability when the ships parted and the oars came back out. An enemy pirate had come down with the idea to free the slaves so they could potentially have an attack from above and below. He had slipped in during the bloody battle, killed their foreman and freed them.
Valen was the first slave he had come to, he had been there longest. Had been working hardest. The captain was his master after all, his owner. So the boy worked hard, and his effort was rewarded. He was the first out of the deck, and the last on it. As the first of his row the work he had to do to row was less than the other two, although still considerable. He was given slightly better portions of food, although he was still malnourished to a severe degree. Still, it was as it should be. He was a slave after all. So when the enemy pirate unlocked his manacles, Valen acted fast. The manacles themselves served as a solid weapon and he swung them viciously at the man, striking him hard upside the head as the man's hands were busy with the next slaves manacle. The pirate crumpled like a sack of grain and Valen took the blade at the man's side. He stared at it for a time, feeling the grip in his hand, the weight of it and it felt right. Looking up toward the stairs, Valen felt the draw to help in the battle. He knew the ships crew by sight. So he ran up the stairs and joined.
He was a natural with the weapon.
He moved like a coiled viper, unconsciously moving well with the weapon. He blocked, parried, and redirected blows, with his own slashes, cuts, and thrusts aiming to kill. He fought hard, although eventually their ships crew had been defeated. They had been outnumbered by the larger ship and they were too far behind for one freed slave with a sword to turn the tide, no matter how talented he was. He was of course taken as the slave of the other ship. Rebranded, whipped severely for killing the man's men, and put in the very back of the rowing deck of the ship that had attacked them. That position was frequently whipped as an example to others, at times was forgotten to be fed, and in general was considered the worst one in every way. That didn't bother Valen though.
After all, the captain was his master.
He had held a blade since the of course. His caretaker has seen to it that he had properly learned a basic style and he taught him how to ignite his blade in fire with his chakra nature. He rather enjoyed fighting with the weapons and it
was where he felt his draw toward. It was what he wanted to focus on. He had a natural gift he was told, and that it was good that he wanted to make use of it as it meant it would not go to waste. So when Sero handed him a training sword, expelled from the man's body. He took it gladly and felt the weight of it. It had a solid weight to it and felt strong and sturdy. It was blunted of course, as was proper for a training weapon. Sero told him the rules of the engagement and Valen fell into his stance. When Sero told him that he would fail if he was pushed out of the arena, or failed to push Sero out of the arena within two minutes. The moment the man said begin Valen's sword would ignite in fire, the flames licking up the blade as the young man moved, his training with his caretaker taking over. 'Be vicious, and unrelenting.' The old man had said, which was why the first thing Valen did was kicked sand up toward Sero's head, the grainy substance potentially getting caught in eyes, mouth, and nose and causing disruption. The he would swing. The fire cracked and hissed as the blade swung through the air at his maximum speed, a backhand strike that had the purpose of forcing Sero on the defensive, letting Valen set the pace of the battle. The swing was wide, purposefully, and if the man blocked it he would find Valen stronger than his size would make one seem. His years rowing ships coming into play. If the blade was blocked Valen would aim to either push the interlocked blades so that the tip of his was aligned with Sero before thrusting toward the man. Intent on making him step back and toward the end of the ring.

Description: Chakra Flow refers to both the flowing of chakra through an object. Generic Chakra Flow simply increases the weapon's Durability OR Hardness by +1 rank. By channeling in different elements this also influences the effects by changing the nature of the chakra flow. (Note: elemental chakra flow also carries over the +1 tier for Durability/Hardness from the original technique.)
Earth: Turns the blade into a deep black. Increases grade or hardness by +1 rank (so basically +2 ranks on hardness/grade or +1 rank in each.)
Fire: Ignites the blade in fire. B-rank Fire damage and spreading fire on contact.
Lightning: Creates sparks along the chakra flow. C-rank Lightning damage and numbness in the affected area. (-1 advantage to Coordination for two posts.)
Wind: Causes the chakra flow to grow in size. B-rank Wind cutting potential and a longer chakra extension (up to 3 feet.)
Water: Encases the blade in a thick skin of water flowing either away or towards the user. Reduces the opponent's Strength of their swing on contact by -1 tier as well as pushes their attack in the direction of the water current with B-tier Strength.
