Starting at 0/950 due to UA.
Unique Abilities:
Rough Start: Due to Valen’s brutal background he’s starting with an extra 950 total experience that has to be paid back before being able to continue on.
One Handed Seals: Valen is able to do hand signs with one hand. However when he does this he takes a -1 tier to coordination for the purposes of the speed of those seals.
Appearance: Valen stands at 5’1 being extremely short due to a life of malnutrition causing his growth to be stunted. His years of labor however have given him a strong and lean physique. His hair stands up naturally, and is jet black with some white running through it in a unique manner that he couldn’t explain if he tried. His eyes are red and he wears a black cloak like jacket that goes from his shoulders to the tops of his feet along with black pants that are tucked into black boots. The jacket has a white collar around it and is made to easily be thrown off in its entirety for ease of movement. He generally wears nothing else underneath in terms of upper body. Although at times he might wear a sleeveless black shirt that gives his arms the most possible movement. Generally Valen has a rather bored expression on his face and looks stoic. His years as a slave have left his hands calloused and a slave brand can be seen on the inside of his wrist and is in the shape of a diamond with a circle within it. Upon his back more brands, faded, but still visible, can be seen. A circle with a zig-zag pattern down the middle. A Yin-Yang symbol, an ‘X’ with small diamonds in the four corners between the lines. As well as multitudes of others.
History: Valen couldn’t remember the names of his parents if he tried. He also couldn’t care less. They weren’t important to him, because they did not raise him. His earliest memories were of carrying things around in a galley on a ship. Trying to keep from underfoot, and not understanding everything around him. All he knew was that his shoulder on his back hurt where someone had put a hot object into it telling him that it would give him a ‘neat mark’. A woman was there, with similar eye colour to him and black hair. She seemed to be crying silent tears as she worked, manacled ankles keeping her still so that she couldn’t try to escape. He himself did not have the manacles, he was too young to swim. So no one was worried about him escaping. Eventually he was separated from that ship. The captain exchanged money with another captain and Valen was given another ‘neat mark’ on his back. He cried out in pain at that one, he had done so at the first one but this time when he cried out he was struck hard.
His life continued on like that, as he slowly grew, always smaller than average due to poor diet he eventually was put onto rowing the oars in the decks below. Working hours a day from sunup to sun down. The work put muscle on him, and calluses on his hands. Eventually his back became riddled with scars from whip marks and as he grew, and was sold again and again, each time a new slave brand put into him to mark him as the property of a new captain. The previous one having a simple line branded through it to show it’s status as where he formerly belonged. He didn’t know how many he had, since he couldn’t actually count them. He was worked to the bone, barely given enough food to survive but eventually this chapter of his life would end. One day, as the ship closed in on a target that the pirates were going to capture and plunder, they were taken by surprise by naval forces of a shinobi village. To be precise, Kirigakure.
The ship Valen was on was sunk by the naval vessels and survivors were pulled from the water. Upon seeing the brands upon the slaves bodies they were told they were free, and would be able to go where they wished. Of course, given that Valen had never known anything else, he simply cocked his head to the side and asked where they wanted to brand him. Asked them where his spot on the rowers bench would be. It took time for them to get him to understand, with his limited teaching and language skills, that he wouldn’t have to row any longer. Still, he did not know what to do. He was returned to Kirigakure, and instated as a citizen. He was still a little young to live on his own and frankly, didn’t know enough about anything at all, including basic communication skills, to do so with any degree of success. So he was fostered to an old man who had retired as a shinobi and needed help.
The next few years would go by in a blur for Valen as he was crammed full of basic knowledge that he should have already had instinctively ingrained within him by then. Letters, numbers, communication, how to handle money and what it was. He was trained physically too, and his body, still strong from rowing if malnourished, filled out properly. His height was permanently stunted however, he had finished growing at 5’1. Although he simply didn’t care about such things. The next few years would have him enter into the academy once he had enough basic knowledge to do so. Where he would be and remain a loner throughout. No one picked on him though. Most were too nervous about the guy with red eyes who simply acted bored. His time in slavery had hardened him severely against others. Causing him to be arrogant at times when he saw how little other individuals had been through in their lives. This was quickly beaten out of him by the old man who looked after him. Although he still looked down on others who had an easier life without such hardships.
Soon after he graduated from the Academy, the old man passed away, although through the few years Valen had lived with him he had instilled the basic knowledge of all Valen needed in order to survive. So he, a new shinobi in the village of Kirigakure, was given a small apartment and now he’s able to begin to really make something of his life. For the first time in it his choices are more or less his own. We find him now using his time to train and increase his capabilities so that he is able to progress further. Although really, he isn’t aware of what he should do with his life as of now. Doesn’t have a goal to drive towards, and doesn’t even really have any friends. Which are things that will either be solved, or not, in due time.
Personality: Outwardly Valen comes off as constantly bored of his surroundings. His features give little away unless he truly see’s someone or something as contemptible. He has an innate confidence in his own personal capabilities and is incredibly stubborn and determined to prove that confidence as justified. Valen can be rather cold hearted, believing people should help themselves rather than expect others to do so. Weakness is something he absolutely abhors and he can vicious verbally and physically when it’s shown. In his eyes losing does not equate to weakness, not being willing to do what is necessary and relying on others is.
With that said Valen obviously believes in helping oneself without relying on others. To this end his past has caused certain psychological trauma’s to him that he neither gets help or wants help for. Nightmares are a normal occurrence for him and it isn’t uncommon to find him in a training ground at odd hours of the night due to such things. He doesn’t talk about them, and trying to get information about him personally is akin to pulling teeth for many. As such he’s generally a loner wherever he goes.
Deep down Valen wants to be wanted, for his presence to be desired. Although this is a subconscious desire that he could not and would not put into words. As he isn’t fully aware of it himself. However he will subconsciously find himself around those who have portrayed interest in his presence without thinking of it. He himself doesn’t know why he’s there, and will always make an excuse. Such as simply wanting a fight, and being bored and having nothing better to do.
When in combat Valen goes into a savagery that many would find surprising given his usual attitude. He tends to be quick, efficient and absolutely brutal to any and all who are in his way and has no qualms regarding injury. Believing that ‘pain is the greatest of teachers’. Fighting however is almost always his go to strategy and a diplomatic solution with him is almost always going to be a diplomatic nightmare instead.
