One Day They'll Stay Clean Empty One Day They'll Stay Clean

“Just wash off all the paint from the stone faces. It’s away from any immediate person, as well as outside. Think you could do it?” The shinobi’s voice echoed in her head.

“Tsk easy.” Her memory of her own voice echoed in return as she stared on at the mountain.

Not a single face was left untouched. The faces towering over the young girl. They were far bigger than expected. How could children even afford this much paint?! The sound of snickering caused the girl's eyes shot over to see a small group of snickering children who quickly fled in a panic the moment they saw the eye twitching death glare the girl held firmly on her face. She watched as they slowly left out of her sight leaving her with the daunting task in front of her. She sighed and grabbed the buckets at her feet, and shakily carried them all the way to the first face to begin.

By mid day she managed to get all the first face. Both buckets were now filled with dirty water. And both of her arms are already ready to die. She flopped down on the platform that suspended her and the buckets by the faces. She used her vest to wipe the sweat from her face before turning her tired eyes onto the other stone faces. If this had been a task for an entire team this would be the end of it. At this rate she might not even finish until midnight even. Dahlia let out a strained sigh followed by the falling of her head.

Whatever. She was alone now and complaining about such a silly task wasn’t going to get her to new heights of being a ninja. She gripped her shoulder as she rotated her arm with a balled up fist. Her amber eyes locked onto the next face. She’d finish this task. All by herself even if she had to! Her father never gave up, and if he was faced with the same task she knew he’d easily complete it all by himself to only prove himself as the super cool self made ninja he was. So she would too.

After tracking back to get new water Dahlia finished the next face with as much gusto as she could muster getting it done even faster than planned too! She did so with only the cost of her arm feeling so dead she could barely move them with outwincing at their soreness. Her stomach even cried out in protest  of a break. Begrudgingly she allowed a break after she returned the buckets for the time being. All before using the rooftops to avoid as many people as she could to get back to her small home.

She raised her hand to get the door before wincing at the flexing of her arm. Her brows frowned as she tried once more only for another wince. She then took a deep breath before puffing up her cheeks with wide eyes  forcing her arm to move to the handle. A small stream of air leaving her lips in the form of a small squeak as she did so. She forced the door open slowly. Her face beat red by the end of the entire process. Her brows twitch then the moment she looked forward to see her aunt staring right back at the incredibly stupid face Dahlia held.

    “....”

    “....”

“The bathroom is free for once but you should hurry before someone else claims it.” Her aunt said with a bored expression pointing her thumb towards the bathroom.

“I don’t have to use the bathroom idiot!” Dahlia shouted back with somehow even deeper red cheeks.

“Riiiiiight….” Her aunt replied calmly; clearly not believing her before walking off.

Dahlia clenched her teeth in annoyance as her aunt left for her bedroom. She slowly lowered her shoulders that she hadn’t even noticed here hiking up all that time before slowly making her way further inside. Her anger gradually lessened. Though the more it did the more it was replaced with a suffocating feeling of anxiety that came with the close walls that felt almost as if they were trying to sneak their way up on her on both sides in order to grab her. If they did there would be no fast way out of the house. With limited ways out she almost felt trapped.

“Oh hey Dahlia I made some noodles would you like-'' One of her uncles started to speak, holding up a bowl of noodles only for them to be quickly swept away by Dahlia who soon after fled the entire downstairs kitchen she had managed to make it to. “.... Thanks uncle. No problem, kid I live to serve. You’re so underappreciated as a house husband uncle! Oh I know dear but thank you for saying so!”

“Uncle, why are you talking to yourself?” Her 5 year old cousin asked as they peaked over from the living room.

“.... Just keeping myself sane Octavis ....” Her uncle muttered back.

After finishing the bowl of noodles Dahlia left the bowl up in her tent to be returned to the kitchen when everyone was resting. She then left back to the Hokage Rocks. Her body was far from fully rested. If anything it was more agitated now more than ever, but at least it was filled. For the next several hours leading into the night she forced her body beyond the point of exhaustion to finish the last of the faces.

As she finished the last dog ear on the most recent addition to the rock she finally let herself collapse onto the top of the rocks head. She accidentally knocked the bucket of dirty water onto her own head in the process. She wiggled the best she could out of the bucket too tired by now to truly lash out at the poor innocent bucket. At this point she was yet again overly hungry, and ready to pass out now that every part of her body was in pain from the work she did. She finally finished the task though.

Her tired eyes looked up to watch the stars over the village. Despite being stuck behind the walls of the village the stars still looked the same. It was one of her favorite things. And something that one of her earliest memories was of. Back when her father was still around; he, her mother, and herself would all dance around the campfire with their other family members. All while they all sang, and laughed. Everything was always so nice back then. She always felt free, and had felt so easy to connect with her family.

She felt her eyes close on their own, and once they opened once more she was in someone’s arms. Her eyes shifted to the long orange hair on the woman’s back followed by her scent. Her mother was back from yet another trip. She felt her gentle touch on her back followed by her calm soft tone.

“You know I’m sure Mr. Eguchi would have given you another day if you would have asked him nicely, love… Either him or the shinobi that gave you the mission. After all, he seemed kind enough to tell me where I’d likely find you when I didn’t find you at home.” Dahlia shifted to look at her mother’s mildly humored face only to return with one of rejection towards such an idea of asking for more time; which only led to her mother chuckling a bit. “Right. You hate going the easy way out with anything. Well for now rest. Okay?”

Dahlia after a moment or so finally relaxed her face to close her eyes once more. As much as she wanted to yell at her mother’s comment she was way too tired to do so. That, and she honestly had missed being close to her mother. It wasn’t the old late nights of laying in the grass staring up into the sky that they used to do with her father. But nowadays this was the closest thing she felt that would likely get. She gripped onto her mothers top a bit more as she let herself fall asleep in her arms once more.

The next day she picked her sore body up from her bed in her tent to make her way back to the rock formation. There she grabbed her buckets where she had left them, and collected some more water to do a bit more extra scrubbing on the parts of property around the rocks that still had some paint before making her way back to inform the shinobi that gave out missions that she finished her given mission. Once that was done she finally made her way back home before the streets got too crowded.
