- The Takoyami Family were part of the main Hozuki clan up until a couple hundred years ago. As tensions increased and the likeliness of invasion or war increased, the Takoyami separated themselves in hope to spare themselves the grief and battles that came with it. They are a minor family in size now, still recognized by the Hozuki as a technical part of their overall clan, with less than a hundred people living and working together on the western coast of the archipelago owned by the Hozuki. The small community relies on each other and prides itself on producing textiles from seaside plants as well as resources for trade including fishing the abundant squid/octopus and medical based resources (herbs, weeds, snails and anemones). Yearly, the Hozuki have a festival of lights, which takes place on a clear summer's eve and is enjoyed with lanterns, music, and the bright bioluminescence upon the shoreline. They have developed some differences from the main Hozuki clan that ought to be noted here:
- Susceptible to Dehydration and Illness- Usually at its worse in childhood, this can impact the constitution of individuals up through adulthood
- Kappa Demon Lore- There is an old belief that a Kappa demon resides in the waters nearby and it is to be thanked for protecting the Takoyami Family from floods, tsunamis and pirates. It is said a willing sacrifice must be given every five years to appease the demon and keep its protection.
- Takoyami Techniques: Individuals have been taught to share or create their own cephalopod based jutsu (ink, camouflaging skin etc). This custom jutsu is accessible to any Hozuki, provided they can explain how they learned it. The Takoyami don't mind teaching their techniques as they are each singular jutsu and not secret bloodline abilities. The Takoyami just figured out a way to incorporate their cephalopod knowledge into their jutsu.

- Miaka was raised by her grandmother, as her parents were often too busy with their business and work. Her parents ran a small private clinic especially to serve the poor in the family and came home just to fall asleep, exhausted. Her grandmother, Nunnally (whom Miaka fondly calls Nonna) took care of her daily needs and basic education. The Takoyami Family are especially dependent on staying hydrated and tend to be weaker in constitution than other folk. Children are especially vulnerable and due to consistent sicknesses in young age, Miaka was often too weak to go out and explore the world with friends. Instead, she stayed inside and read books (learning to read at the remarkable age of 2), listened to her Nonna's stories while cuddled up with a plush toy, or observed community members through her home's windows.

- By the time she was 11 years old, Miaka was considered a prodigy. Although, compared to other Takoyami children who made it through the routine sicknesses, the girl was still more feeble and frail. She made friends wherever she went outside and her companions would often visit her at her home to make her life easier. At 14, Miaka was as well read as most grown adults and already beginning to study the medical texts of her parents. She fell in love with the intern working with her parents, a boy her own age named Kaleo. While Kaleo wasn't as intelligent, he had excellent strength and speed and was an efficient person to help in the clinic.
Tragedy struck in Miaka's life when she was 16 years old. Local village lore said that Takoyami Family had constructed a five year plan with a kappa demon in order to protect the village from pirates and seasonal floods. Every five years, a 16 year old would be elected to represent the village as a willing sacrifice to the kappa. The position comes with great honor for the family, and given that Miaka's health was often poor, it was a grand surprise for them all. Miaka took the obligation proudly and Kaleo held her hand as they were led to the sacrificial boat ceremony. At the last moment, Miaka faltered in her will and fear overcame her. She begged the Takoyami Elders to choose someone else and brought shame to her family. Kaleo embraced her when the Family turned her down and admonished her, and then heroically dove into the ocean waves to take Miaka's place. Her first true love never resurfaced and the kappa seemed to accept the sacrifice. In shame, the Family shunned the distraught young woman who came back to her family in hysterics. Her Nonna tried to comfort and protect her from the village scorn, but even her parents experienced levels of ostracization. When the floods came a month later, three people died and the Takoyami blamed Miaka, demanding she be forced out of the Family. Not even her old Nonna could safeguard her anymore.

- Upon leaving the Takoyami, Miaka found a ride into the urban capitol area of Kirigakure. She observed shinobi in training and found their wages to be livable and preferable to other local jobs. Miaka signed up to be a ninja and has fought hard, using her intelligence and her determination to drive her to success. She only hopes to continue improving and bury her past far behind her.

- Miaka loves story telling, plush toys, and reading outside. It is hard for her to get around sometimes, so she especially loves all of the time she can spend in the outdoors. Miaka routinely carries water with her because she is very easily dehydrated and by adulthood she knows the many health routines she must take to ensure her body is in good condition for the shinobi life. If she cannot do physical missions due to a sickness, Miaka turns her skills to helping with her comrades mission paperwork. She is happy to do whatever is needed to help the team succeed in and out of missions and can come off as an easy target to be a "door mat". Miaka believes in the worth of every person and intentionally chooses not to underestimate others because of her own experiences, she knows people can do often more than expected.
Miaka's dislikes include talking about her clan, alcohol, and her own health condition. She despises being treated as sickly or incapable and it impacts her own self image at times. She longs to prove herself and while she welcomes friends by the handful, team mates by the bushel, she avoids any serious romantic connections due to her traumatic past. Miaka carries a deep sense of pain and shame, which when triggered can lead her into bouts of rage. Such bouts can put her own body at risk, so she has to practice meditation to not exhaust herself. The young woman also tends to have a strong ability to compartmentalize between work and life: juggling a great compassion for others with a doctor-like keen perception and lack of guilt between saving and taking a life with her shinobi learned skills.

Despite the couple months that she had been living on Divide Island as part of the guild, Yona still saw herself as extra. She saw herself as not part of the guild and as such, independent, like a contractor who just so happened to have a tattoo. Sure, she enjoyed the company of a few of the members, and sure she had to admit Johann was growing on her much in the same way an older brother might have. Yet, the nineteen year old was anything but trusting, and there was no reason for her to believe that she was going to stay in the guild forever, at least not in her mind. In her deepest heart, Yona longed to be part, and how Johann knew that, Yona couldn't fathom a guess. But Yona did not dare to hope for such a thing, not when her priorities were to avenge her brother first, and live her own life second.
Yona felt Johann's anger and possibly something deeper in the air, something almost like disappointment or betrayal. As if she had personally wronged him in some way. The female kept opening her mouth to argue with him, to defend herself against his sharp candor and admonishments. Yona had to keep closing her mouth as Johann shouted at her, and for the first time since she was a child, recalling her father's angered voice, she was reminded that she did deserve to get yelled at and that she really ought to keep it closed in the first place. Yona was not going to talk herself out of this one it seemed, and flirting, distracting and tricking likely would not work on the man who had seen most of her wiles already. As he shouted, she balked, her face turning into a forced frown. She looked at her feet, doubting her actions and feeling a little bit of guilt.
Had her ambition and drive for power gone too far? Attacking a cook? What had she been thinking, Yona wondered in the privacy of her mind. She hadn't meant to nearly kill the guy, just inconvenience him, just harm him, just get him back for standing in her way the same way that she paid in full any perceived debts while living out on the rough streets. Standing there in her old wayfarer clothes, Yona felt somewhat dirty in front of Johann now. When she lifted her head again, he had seemed to finish his rant, though his eyes were still intense and lit upon her face. He spoke of doling out a punishment, and of feeling pain at having to do it. She bristled somewhat, the same words used by fathers everywhere. 'It's for your own good'.
"Don't do me any favors, then," Yona uttered under her breath glancing away from him, towards the water and the oncoming rain clouds. Distancing herself emotionally would no doubt be seen as rude or a lack of remorse, perhaps even apathy. She didn't want Johann to know that he had struck so close to home with his words, or that she was actually taking them to heart. Her walls were all up, and now they were especially fortified with her resilient--no, stubborn reassurances that he didn't want her in the guild anyway and even that Johann did not think she was worthy of being taught by him any longer.
Her shoulders slumped as she followed Johann, heeding his demand and getting teleported into the middle of some unknown dense jungle. She felt dizzy, almost sick to her stomach, again after being teleported with no warning. But this time, Yona didn't complain. She placed a hand on a nearby tree and closed her eyes, exhaling. The female lifted her head as she heard him untying a rapier, and made a face. So this was it then. He was marooning her in this humid dangerous hellhole, giving her a rapier to survive on as an act of mercy or pity. Yona's frown became an evident scowl as she stood up straighter, willing the lightheadedness away. Screw him then, she was capable of anything. Anything.
