Back to Basics: Shippuden

After a day of basics and some raiton training Tōri decided to do some rudimentary doton exercises and work his way up to reminding himself of some of the more advanced forms. There truly was no substitute for the training facilities konoha housed, it was hard not to marvel at them even with his myriad visits over the years. Usually he would desire to use a clone to practice this first one but instead opted for using one of the target dummies so he could preserve his reserves for all he’d planned for the day. Slipping below the dirt field as he moulded doton chakra that allowed him to almost swim through the earthen ground. Popping just below the target he grabbed the wooden stake holding it in place and pulled it below until just the head was left above ground. Satisfied with his work he prepared to make use of this new placement with some of his aim target practice.

'Bunny Arrival' :

While elemental techniques were good and extremely useful in their variety of applications there was something to be said about the simplicity of non-elemental jutsu. This one had a special place in Tōri's heart, the use of hair was such a unique application of chakra and ninjutsu that simply asked to be explored more with. Someday soon he would need to do just that; sit down and write some techniques that he himself conceived and practice them out in the yard. He had yet to create something like that on his own, returning to his exercise three seals were formed with rapid succession. Tiger. Monkey. Bird. His long hair began to grow and became highly manipulative with a crushing power beneath their long-reaching grip. With this new appendage he was able to grab the targets from far over in the yard and yank them out from their deeply lodged posts. Flinging the dummy across the yard he marveled at the immediate strength the technique displayed, excited to get to use it more as well as play with it himself in a personal technique that would no doubt take a good deal of time to fully formulate. Completing this technique he moved on to more doton techniques to continue his spree from earlier.

'Bunny Arrival' :

Instead of burying a target by swimming under them this technique just utilizes the swimming in earth ability, allowing for phenomenal versatility for doton user’s. Recalling the technique fondly from his youth Tōri covered himself in doton chakra and dove into the ground, savoring the feeling of freedom and control that this technique provided him. Swimming between the training grounds he dipped in and out and took a look at the various exercises the leaf shinobi were working on that day. It was a busy day and many of their rooms and fields were occupied if not by an individual or pair then a small group. There were even some eager looking academy students who looked to be practicing some ninjutsu they had no doubt learned recently or perhaps even that day. Bobbing up and down Tōri dove deep before locating his original field where his pack was still leaning against the wall and popped out of the ground.

'Bunny Arrival' :

Similarly supplementary this next one could also be used in a bit more aggressive of a manner, creating a muddy surface from which to carry a target away on. With just a few hand seals Tōri created a muddy surface on the ground below another one of the many targets in the area still standing, causing it to slowly wobble back and forth as the dirt around it turned into a sloppy mire. The mud then rushed away from the wall, carrying with it the dislodged target before it slumped down face-first into the crawling collection of earth. Releasing the jutsu the target remained sunken in the now inert pile of mud, now slowly rolling towards a drain that was used so suiton techniques didn’t flood the area. Just before the connection to the technique was fully severed he inched the blob of dirt along towards the drain so as to make it easier to be washed away.

'Bunny Arrival' :

This next one was an incredibly simple earthen wall, requiring but three seals and a classic palms pressed to the earth to perform. Going through the familiar motions Tōri channeled his chakra through the ground to erect the basic barrier, slowly rising from the ground until it reached a height just over his own. Satisfied with the return to such basics he released the technique and allowed the earth to rescind back into the ground and left an unmarred surface behind. He’d gotten a lot done that day, it was time for a quick break before hitting it again, even if they were simple techniques. It was important not to overdo it no matter the stage that one practiced at. It reminded him of his early days in the shinobi academy, overdoing it with ninjutsu practice and being scolded by his mother when she later learned as she always did.

'Bunny Arrival' :

Continuing with his earthen training spree Tōri made his way through more of the basics, this time tearing the ground itself apart after a few hand seals and palms slammed to the ground once more. The tear in the earth grew crack by crack until it reached a new practice dummy that was the target of his technique’s ire. Not satisfied with the power of the raked ground that was left behind he reenacted the technique with increased vigor, the ground truly quaking before upending with terrific cracks and juttings of the ground as a fissure stretched across the field alarmingly fast. So much was the power behind the technique that the wall behind it cracked and tumbled into the other targets. Sighing Tōri made his way over and spent the next half-hour or so cleaning up his mess with doton. It wasn’t perfect work, making himself realize the benefit to being able to cover up a mess like that flawlessly with doton and made a mental note to look into that in the future.

'Bunny Arrival' :

Thankfully the next technique he had planned was far less destructive to these fine training grounds. Just a simple blast of concentrated doton chakra that was used as a projectile released unfortunately from one’s mouth. This was an incredible feat to be able to form doton with one's chakra alone and not requiring pre existing earth was something he needed to take advantage of in his personal ninjutsu studies that were in dire need of review and expansion. Forming the four seal Tōri let loose a stone with tremendous speed that split the head of one of the only remaining target dummies. In fact, they had already been knocked over early from his hasty training, so they were currently just lodged in the ground in little makeshift holes and leaning against the wall. Thankfully this wing wasn’t busy at all and it would be able to be repaired before it was in dire need.

Confused, Tōri was sure he had trained this technique. In fact, he was so sure that he was quite certain he had accidentally used this other technique incorrectly on ‘another character’ if you know what I mean. Wink, wink. Anyways, enough of that now you, here Tōri is training up and shit and here he did slip right into the ground with doton chakra coating his entire body. This allowed him to essentially swim in the earth and then… wait no, I’m just getting this in. It turns out I totally misunderstood the jutsu and there’s no swimming involved, Tōri just like phases through the wall? And can wait all sneaky and pop out. Alright, this could be pretty useful. Relenting the fight he seemed to be having with himself internally he re-emerged from the stone wall, not entirely sure he had nailed that technique, but regardless he’d probably still just keep to using the mole one. Moles are just simpler creatures. Silly rocks.

'Bunny Arrival' :

This next one was a classic favorite amongst new doton wielders and at b rank was fairly available to the masses at large. Forming a terrible stone draconic creature from existing earth was the dream of many a hopeful shinobi, so too was the case for young Tōri. He recalled pestering his mother to show him the moves far before he was ready, something she relented allowing him to struggle through the process on his own after showing him the ropes. Weaving through the familiar seals he poured his chakra into the earth, marveling at the progress he’d made since he was a boy. A yawning head pulled itself from the earth, its movements too slow for real use in combat behind a protective shield or distraction. Allowing the creature to pull its entire body out of the ground he commanded it to lumber about the training grounds before releasing the technique, the stone dragon curling up and leaving behind a statue of its previously animated self. Now that his had successfully gotten back into the swing of things with his training he planned to take the next few days to practice his suiton and mokuton techniques, ensuring there were no missed areas before setting up a training session he’d been planning for one of the newly appointed genin.

Worried this next one would be a tad situational, Tōri realized he had never truly practiced this one back in the day, making it a wholly new addition to his repertoire. Moving out of the target practice area that he had done quite a number on he found an empty field with a stone floor that would do nicely. For this last one he would need to form a clone, quickly creating a doppelganger of himself and nodding to one another as he moved across the field. Forming the necessary hand seals a dome of earth began to form around the clone. Once it was sealed off at the top the real jutsu effect took place, as the chakra from his clone began to refill his reserves back up. In an attempt to test the dome's structural integrity the clone fired off a stone bullet at the ceiling, cracking it but the dome quickly repaired itself with the chakra it had already begun to slurp up. Satisfied that the technique was going well he released it and allowed the clone to bust out from the top of it as his chakra withdrew from it and stopped its repairing ability. Releasing the clone he realized how terrifying that would be, stuck within a dark and draining place while topping off the user. Heading home he was ready for a long bath and some sake to unwind.
