Jareth ~ King of Lies
Albidaya
Jareth has been known by many names throughout history. Ahriman - the ancient father of evil spirits, Set - the embodiment of Isfet and all the worlds chaos and destruction, Qiong Qi 穷奇 - one of the four evils bent on obfuscating truth and causing war. These along with a myriad of other personas and names culminated into the being as he exists now; Jareth, the King of Lies.
A being born of pure chakra, he began as most things do; young and inexperienced and frail. A byproduct of greater powers, he floated through the world trying to find his place in it. Over time he learned of his true power - he could influence and manipulate humans. He was instinctively drawn to places where violence and conflict thrived, feeding off the negative emotions that inevitably built there. With each successful feed he grew in strength and power, he learned the languages of those he fed from and adopted visages that suited his feeding grounds. Some groups hailed him a god, others a demon. Regardless of how he was viewed however, he would always adapt, in a chameleon-esque way he would conform to the desires of those he fed from. If they wanted a terrifying demon or a benevolent saviour he would become either, anything to keep himself satisfied.
At first he would greedily devour his victims, leaving nothing but an empty husk after a quick but satisfying meal. He learned the error of this eventually and adopted more subtle methods - methods designed to keep his hosts alive for as long as possible. His form without substance, his ultimate goal always is to become tangible. To feel heat and cold, to taste fruit and flesh. Many times over many years he came close, invading his host and attempting to take over. Each time his attempts were thwarted by the maddening endurance of the most terrible of human conditions - free will.
His failures never discourage him though, as with each failure came new knowledge and experience. Each new attempt to gain control increased his power and aided him to hone his devastating abilities. He began to groom his hosts, being more discerning in his choices and looking for someone who was just pliable enough to be useful to him, but strong enough to withstand him. He needed a person that was a blank slate, with enough insecurity and fear that he could make them dependent on his presence.
Shēntǐ Biǎoxiàn
Jareth spent years scouring through the populous, always searching for the perfect host. A host that he could manipulate to his will. His requirements were simple, though due to the complexity of the human psyche the task of finding the perfect host was infinitely more difficult than he had first surmised. Through his boundless patience he eventually happened upon a particularly troubled soul; Sayuri. A simple woman, not impressively skilled or strong, but moldable. He watched her for years; her silence in the face of anxiety, her need for validation and support, her fear of others. He nudged and prodded her life, gently at first, sowing doubt and distrust wherever he could - growing the fear inside of her. As he manipulated her surroundings it wasn’t long before the opening he sought unlocked and she was unconsciously prepared to accept him into her mind.
Through an unfortunate series of events, and an unhealthy amount of endorphins and adrenaline, it was barely even a concern when Jareth first showed himself to Sayuri. Through time and determined effort, he took years to train her to rely on him. He taught her that anything she wanted could be hers, and more importantly, that it should be hers. He taught her to be impulsive and give in to her desires whenever she so chose - desires that he also implanted in her through careful maneuvering. Over the course of his time grooming her he turned her from a quiet, introverted woman who feared everything around her, into a compulsive cannibalistic and hedonistic sadomasochist with a penchant for blood and mayhem.
Yıkıcı Kişilik
Jareth is, in a single word, selfish. Since his ‘birth’ he has sought after only one thing - to manifest. He is virtually formless in the traditional sense of the word; he has a form but it does not allow him to physically affect the world. Currently his only way to experience the physical world is through his host bodies. Since he is not human he is not beholden to human ideals, motivations or weaknesses. Though since he has spent so long learning of the psychological needs of humans, he will occasionally adopt those things in order to achieve his goals. He is never above seemingly giving away his power in order to gain an advantage over someone - he has no fears or insecurities of his own to exploit, he merely plays the part to lure those he chooses into a false sense of trust and security.
Abilities
Black Mist Release 1000 Experience
As a being born from the essence of pure chakra, Jareth has a unique ability to manifest and manipulate chakra in a way not usually seen, since the thing he is manipulating is in essence - himself. Because of his unique metaphysical make-up and centuries spent training he has developed his own form of advanced release: Black Mist Release, the Kekkei Shūtoku - 実験修徳. This combines the elemental forces of Wind and Water with the spiritual and physical forces of Yin and Yang. The unique combination of elements and natures allows for more diverse properties within techniques - Black Mist (otherwise referred to as Kuroikiri) may be solid, liquid, gaseous or pure energy. Visually this can be observed as a dark shadowy presence with a greenish glow regardless of what the release is augmenting. The effects of its jutsu are devastatingly powerful, allowing Jareth full Chakra Manipulation, which he can grant to his host and allow them to use the release to augment their techniques and abilities.
At its base when Black Mist Release is unlocked this grants finer Chakra Control to any techniques that Jareth or his host use. This translates into a one Rank reduction in chakra cost to all techniques used regardless of the techniques elements or natures, this stacks with any cost reductions that Jareth or the host may already possess. Additionally the host may create custom techniques using Black Mist Release.
This goes beyond simple Chakra Flow and into the realms of Evocation, Conjuration, Abjuration, Siphoning, Illusion and Transformation. These distinctions are known as the Six Monarchal Tenets. After unlocking Black Mist Release and upon further experience investment, techniques can be modified in one of six ways as explained below.
The Six Monarchal Tenets
Tenet of Evocation: 250 Experience
This is the ability to amplify raw power; increasing the power of any technique cast by One Tier. Augmenting a technique with Evocation costs 10 CP to activate (in addition to the cost of the base technique) and requires no hand seals.
Tenet of Conjuration: 250 Experience
This Tenet can be used in one of two ways. Primarily Conjuration is used with the technique The Spectral Hand of Destruction.
- The Spectral Hand of Destruction:
- Name: The Spectral Hand of Destruction
Rank: S
Power: S
Cost: 30
Upkeep: 10
Range: 500 m
Speed: S
Element: Black Mist Release
Skill: Ninjutsu
Classification: Secret
Requirement: Be Jareth, or his host
Parent Technique: N/A
Hand Seals: Snake -> Tiger -> Dog
Description: This technique is the core of Jareth’s physical power, and when activated allows the user to create any object or creature out of pure chakra. This may be a weapon, armor, creature, person or any other physical object. The uses for this technique are limited only by the user’s creativity. By forming the hand seals a swirling black mist with a sickly green glow coalesces into the creation willed by the user’s thoughts, and will appear within 10 meters of the user. Once per post the conjured creation may be altered without hand seals to appear as something else, though this does not allow for additional items. Each additional item requires paying the CP cost and upkeep for the new item(s) in addition to those already created. Hand seals are required for every five items created. Items created this way have a Quality of S and Hardness of S.
Drawbacks: This technique is limited to physical creations and those creations must stay within the 500 meter range of the caster. All objects or creatures created this way have the signature green glow and shadowy nature inherent in Black Mist Release, making it difficult to hide despite its speed. Each object can be no larger than 10 meters in every direction.
Alternatively, Conjuration may be used to augment any other technique cast by Jareth or his host. For a cost of 10 CP the user may augment another technique of A-Rank or higher to be capable of banishing any summoned creatures, objects or people. This includes any type of clone, elemental or not. In order for this to take effect, the user must have their technique make contact with the summon or clone they seek to ‘banish’. As long as the techniques clash, the target is banished and the technique may be reactivated again as normal, requiring the CP cost to be paid again, hand seals to be used etc. This Tenet is limited to ‘banishing’ summons (specifically denoted by the Kuchiyose Skill), anything listed as a ‘clone’ or ‘replica’ or any people, creatures or objects that are created using a technique to externalize the same from chakra, though may not be used on Entity Level Restricted based summons, clones and techniques. The Tenet of Conjuration may be used to banish five times per thread.
Tenet of Abjuration: 250 Experience
This Tenet allows the augmentation of defensive techniques to make them more effective. For a cost of an additional 10 CP the user may augment any defensive technique to allow it to absorb 1 Rank higher of damage. This ability covers any technique or ability that creates a shield, wall, barrier or armor. It also grants the ability to use the following technique;
- Profane Mist:
- Name: Profane Mist
Rank: S
Power: S
Cost: 30
Upkeep: 20
Duration: Varied (see description)
Cooldown: 7 posts
Range: 0 - 10 m
Speed: S
Element: Black Mist Release
Skill: Ninjutsu/Fuuinjutsu
Classification: Secret
Requirement: Be Jareth, or his host
Parent Technique: N/A
Hand Seals: Rooster - Dog - Serpent
Description: A primarily defensive technique, Profane Mist creates a 10 meter radius circle of black and green swirling chakra centered on the user or a point that the user chooses within 10 meters of them. The chakra covered area glows with a sickly green light, with the appearance of shadowy tendrils of mist rising from the ground when the technique is cast.
While the technique is active, anyone standing inside the circle is protected from all chakra based damage and effects coming from people or sources that are outside of the circle. This includes chakra based attacks, genjutsu triggers that have not gone off yet, weather effects, dojutsu and any other form of targeted or area of effect chakra based attacks, abilities or techniques.
Anyone within the Profane Mist may affect anyone else within the circle as normal, though they may not affect anyone outside the radius of the technique with any chakra based damage or effects as long as they stay within Profane Mist. The barrier created by Profane Mist can absorb up to 300 CP worth of chakra based techniques and/or abilities and effects. (Whatever the user of the technique being absorbed paid in CP is what it’s cost is.) Once the barrier has absorbed 300 CP either from within or without it will cease to function and will need to be recast.
The technique may be dismissed prematurely by the user before it has absorbed it’s maximum capacity of CP, when dismissed this way the user may choose to have the protective circle expel everyone from within it (except the user), exploding outwards at S-Tier Speed and causing S-Rank damage to anyone caught within the blast radius. When forcefully dispelling the technique its radius is increased to 20 meters for the purpose of the explosion.
Drawbacks: Although it creates a highly defensive barrier, Profane Mist is only useful in certain specific situations. While it effectively stops any chakra based effects or damage, it cannot stop someone from simply stepping in or out of the circle. If forcefully ended, the resulting blast does not distinguish from friend or foe and all except the user are subject to its damage. Additionally, this barrier only stops chakra based attacks, abilities and effects and does not affect physical based attacks or boosts to physical attacks.
Tenet of Siphoning: 250 Experience
One of Jareth’s main skills is draining chakra for his own uses, which is made all the easier by using the Tenet of Siphoning through his host’s bodies. After unlocking this ability, any ability or technique it is applied to increases the effectiveness of any chakra draining effects by 100% (their duration, minimum and maximums and base numbers - in cases where a letter Rank rather than a numerical value is used, the equivalent base CP cost numbers are used; S = 30, A = 20, B = 10, C = 5, D = 3, E = 1). The Tenet of Siphoning need only be noted as being used once unlocked. Unlike usual chakra draining, if the amount drained is more than could normally be held by the user’s maximum chakra pool instead of vanishing, the excess is held in reserve and may only be used on unlocked techniques and abilities specifically granted by Jareth. This reserve excess chakra may only be held for 3 posts before it dissipates into the aether (the first post being the one the chakra was gathered in). Jareth cannot absorb Nature Chakra in this way, unless his host retains that ability.
Tenet of Illusion: 250 Experience
The main ability of the Tenet of Illusion is the technique Sovereign Domination. This technique is how Jareth is able to assert his will over his hosts and acolytes. When this Tenet is unlocked, if the host does not already have Genjutsu they are considered to have the skill only for the express purpose of using the technique Sovereign Domination.
- Sovereign Domination:
Name: Sovereign Domination
Rank: S
Power: S
Cost: 30
Upkeep: 20
Range: 0 - 150 m
Speed: N/A
Element: Black Mist Release
Skill: Genjutsu/Ninjutsu
Classification: Secret
Requirement: Be Jareth, or his host
Parent Technique: The Spectral Hand of Destruction
Hand Seals: N/A
Description: By sacrificing a portion of his own chakra by paying a steep chakra cost, Jareth is able to exert his will over any target within his perception up to 150 meters from his current host. The trigger for this Genjutsu is that Jareth’s victim(s) must observe his technique: The Spectral Hand of Destruction. Specifically he must alter the conjured item to form a three pronged crown on his own (or his current host’s) head. The ability to exert his will over his victims is limited by his victim's Intelligence Stat, and follows the normal rules for dispelling Genjutsu, though does not allow for the Perception Stat to be used to recognize it. For the purposes of this technique only base stats are used, boosts (unique or otherwise) do not aid the victim to fight off Jareth’s presence.- Those with base E-Tier Intelligence have no defense against this technique, there is no post count down, Jareth may take over immediately and the length of his control is limited only by his resources.
- Those with base D-Tier Intelligence have no defense against this technique, there is no post count down and Jareth may take over immediately. He may exert his control for 20 posts without interference.
- Those with base C-Tier Intelligence have minor defense against this technique, there is a 1 post countdown and then Jareth may take over. He may exert his control for 10 posts without interference.
- Those with base B-Tier Intelligence have slightly better defenses against this technique, there is a 3 post countdown and then Jareth may take over. He may exert his control for 5 posts without interference.
- Those with base A-Tier Intelligence have moderate defenses against this technique, there is a 4 post countdown and then Jareth may take over. He may exert his control for 3 posts without interference.
- Those with base S-Tier Intelligence have improved defenses against this technique, there is a 5 post countdown and then Jareth may take over. He may exert his control for 1 post without interference.
- Those with base X-Tier Intelligence are beyond Jareth’s ability to control and are unaffected by this technique.
When the technique is successful and Jareth has established a hold on his targets, the spectral and green glowing crown will form around the head of his newest targets, essentially binding them to his will. He may affect as many people are in visual range of The Spectral Hand of Destruction and within 150 meters of himself, using a single activation and upkeep. Once Jareth has exerted control over a target he may influence them in certain specific ways. The command he gives must be followed, though he cannot give direct commands for the target to injure or kill themselves or others.
Commands and their Effects:- Flee: The target must flee from the source of the command by the shortest and fastest route possible, using any techniques or abilities at their disposal, without causing injury to itself. When using this command, the target’s Intelligence determines the length of time that the target will flee as described above.
- Grovel: The target will immediately kneel and remain that way until further directed or Jareth’s influence has run its course as described above.
- Drop: The target immediately drops anything it is holding and will stay still until further directed or Jareth’s influence has run its course as described above.
- Approach - The target will move towards the user by the shortest and most direct route that does not cause injury, upon reaching 1 meter of the user they will stop and wait for further instructions.
- Halt - The target will cease moving and perform no actions, hand seals or speech. They will remain this way until further directed or Jareth’s influence has run its course as described above.
- Speak - This command may only be issued after the user has asked a question. The target must attempt to answer the question to the best of their ability, bearing in mind that this technique renders them more agreeable to the user.
The victims of this technique will view Jareth, his host and his commands in a positive light, as though they are a trusted ally until the technique ends. Unless the technique ends prematurely as described in the drawbacks, this feeling of trust will take time to fade and in some cases will last indefinitely.
Drawbacks: Beyond the added Chakra cost of having to activate an additional technique to trigger this one, Sovereign Domination is not true mind control. If Jareth injures or attempts to kill anyone affected by this technique, the technique immediately ends on that person regardless of their Intelligence or any other factors. As soon as the technique ends the victim is aware that they were placed under a Genjutsu, and if it is ended prematurely due to violence from Jareth the feeling of trust engineered by the technique is immediately lost. Although this technique can be used on any number of people, it does create logistical issues the more people he has subjected to his will. Because of this, for each target above 10 that he wishes to affect it costs an additional 1 CP per post to maintain the technique.- Those with base E-Tier Intelligence have no defense against this technique, there is no post count down, Jareth may take over immediately and the length of his control is limited only by his resources.
As a secondary effect of the Tenet of Illusion, the user may augment any Genjutsu or Fuuinjutsu at the time of activation for an additional 10 CP. This Illusion augment increases the effective Rank of both Genjutsu and Fuuinjutsu that the user casts for the purposes of dispelling them or breaking seals.
Tenet of Transformation: 250 Experience
With the Tenet of Transformation unlocked, the user may spend an additional 10 CP to augment a single technique used by themselves or their allies within their perceptive range. By paying the CP cost the user can double the range, duration or dimensions of a single technique or increase the speed of a single technique by +1 Tier, the user must pay 10 CP for each category (making all four categories on a single technique - range, duration, dimensions and speed - cost 40 CP). This augment can be used instantly and requires no hand seals, however when used on an ally's techniques, it does require physical contact between the host and the ally.
Tenet Costs
Black Mist Release is a unique Advanced Element, and while it grants many enhancements to techniques including chakra cost reductions, these reductions are never applied to the Tenets themselves. The listed costs for augmenting techniques via the Tenets are fixed and unalterable.
Essence of the Spirit 2600 Experience
Jareth is a being made of pure chakra and as such has substantial chakra reserves, which he will make available to his host when they have dire need.
Essence of the Spirit is paid for incrementally, with each 200 EXP unlocking an additional 30 Chakra up to a maximum of 385 (Jareth’s Maximum Chakra Pool). While the host may unlock the entire Chakra Pool before completing the Labyrinthian Trial, they may only have access to roughly half of it (210 CP = 1400 EXP Invested) until they prove they are worthy. Each unlock allows the host to utilize Jareth’s Chakra Reserves for an additional 2 posts, though until they have completed the Trial they may not use his reserves for longer than 10 posts. After they have completed the Trial they may use the entire Chakra Pool in addition to their own for up to 20 posts.
While Jareth’s Chakra Reserves are seemingly endless, he does have his limits. If he ever reaches zero Chakra Points he will remain dormant and slowly recharge his reserves over a number of posts until he can function again. He regenerates his chakra at a rate of 10 CP per post as long as he does not use any chakra during that time. Once he has been rendered dormant by reaching zero Chakra Points he must take 3 posts to regain his strength before attempting to use chakra again.
The Undying Oath 250 Experience
Jareth is heavily invested in the hosts he chooses, spending oftentimes years choosing them and then additional years grooming them to be the perfect host. Because of the time and energy he invests he does all that he can to ensure the safety of his investment. By sacrificing half of his Chakra from his maximum Chakra Pool he can use the Essence of the Spirit to heal any and all lethal or non-lethal wounds his host may have within a single post. After completing The Labyrinthian Trial the host may use this ability at will.
Dark Delirium 500 Experience
Jareth is a master at manipulating the mind, and as long as he is dwelling in a host he grants his host a defense against others attempts to manipulate their minds. After unlocking this ability, the user is granted a Unique Boost to Intelligence and Perception as Jareth wants to ensure that no one but he may alter his hosts minds.
The Labyrinthian Trial
Unlike other powerful entities, Jareth is not bound to his host; he chooses his hosts. As such, he needs to ensure that his host is worthy of his power, and he does this through something he calls the Labyrinthian Trial. The Trial is not so much a gauntlet as it is a lethal combat. In order to prove themselves worthy of Jareth’s full power, his host must fight for that right in The Labyrinth that Jareth creates for such trials. The host, and any allies they wish to bring with them, will be transported into a mindscape that is a vast and sprawling labyrinth, complete with glittering sand and heavily guarded by the shades of previous failed combatants. These ‘shades’ are not actual combatants for the purposes of the fight, and merely serve as witnesses and ambience. This combat is fully death enabled, and all who enter are subject to it. If the host defeats Jareth, he will disperse and realign himself with his host so that the two become a single being. If the host does not defeat Jareth they will be drained of all their will, shambling around as a near lifeless husk until they shortly thereafter succumb to inevitable death.
Jareth’s Stats
- Strength: S
- Constitution: A
- Stamina: S++
- Speed: A++
- Coordination: S+
- Intelligence: S
- Perception: A
Jareth also knows and can use all unrestricted, non-custom and non-exclusive techniques that are Non-Elemental, Suiton and/or Fuuton from the following skills; Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, Genjutsu, Bukijutsu, Kenjutsu, Kyujutsu, Kugutsu, Fuuinjutsu, Iryojutsu, Kanchijutsu and Kuchiyose techniques as well as access to all of the techniques and abilities he grants his host - whether they’ve unlocked them or not. He also possesses the following ability;
- Corporeal Dissonance:
- Name: Corporeal Dissonance
Rank: S
Power: S
Cost: N/A
Upkeep: N/A
Range: User
Speed: Instant
Element: Black Mist Release
Skill: Ninjutsu/Genjutsu
Classification: Secret
Requirement: Be Jareth
Parent Technique: N/A
Hand Seals: N/A
Description: As a being made of pure chakra, Jareth cannot be killed, only dispersed temporarily. He can also selectively disperse or make solid pieces of his form, or his whole form at will. He may change his appearance, size and density in this manner at will. This particular ability makes it near impossible for him to be killed, as he will continually disperse into his signature black and green glowing mist. When dispersed he may solidify at will anywhere within a thirty meter radius of where he turned into Black Mist.
As a secondary effect of this ability, when fully dispersed and non-corporeal, Jareth may attempt to enter a new host if he deems one suitable, or finds it necessary to ensure his safety. This ability requires 30 CP to attempt. The rules for such follow the same rules as Sovereign Domination with the following exception;
When inhabiting a new host, Jareth is only as physically strong as his host is and is limited to his hosts Strength, Coordination, Constitution and Speed Stats, though he will retain his own Perception, Intelligence, and Stamina. The host may attempt to break the connection as per the rules laid out below, or they may accept their new controller. Unlike Sovereign Domination, Jareth may command his new host to do anything, including attacking allies, without breaking the connection. A host’s ability to resist (and therefore use Genjutsu Kai or other means of breaking free) is limited by their Intelligence stat and identically to Sovereign Domination, his control may only be recognized based on the victim’s Intelligence Stat - not their Perception. Beyond the rules mentioned here, all other normal forms of recognizing and dispelling Genjutsu as per the Genjutsu Rules work as normal.- Those with base E-Tier Intelligence have no defense against this technique, there is no post count down, Jareth may take over immediately and the length of his control is limited only by his resources.
Drawbacks: As Black Mist Release includes a combination of Wind and Water, Jareth is more akin to a heavy mist and as such suffers increased drawbacks from any Katon and Raiton attacks. All Katon attacks count as two Ranks higher for the purposes of damage (Max of X), and all Raiton attacks count as one Rank higher for the purposes of damage (Max of X). If Jareth takes a significant blow from Katon or Raiton it will disperse him automatically and will force him to expend more energy to re-solidify himself. This is translated into a single S-Rank technique’s worth of CP to pull himself back together. This may occur as often as he had Chakra to re-solidify himself, though of course when he reaches zero he is rendered unconscious. When Jareth is inhabiting a new host, he is subject to all of that host's physical weaknesses, if the connection is forcefully or suddenly severed he will disperse immediately and will be required to pay an additional S-Rank’s worth of CP to re-materialize. - Those with base E-Tier Intelligence have no defense against this technique, there is no post count down, Jareth may take over immediately and the length of his control is limited only by his resources.
The Pact
After completing the Labyrinthian Trial, Jareth and his host will merge to create a unified being that perfectly marries the spiritual with the physical. The Labyrinthian Trial is the ultimate test to obtaining full control of the power that Jareth offers. However just as with all stories of unimaginable power, this comes at great cost. In exchange for his power Jareth demands the soul of his host. Once the Trial is successfully completed (by using the Control Fight system and achieving the appropriate dice rolls), Jareth will indeed grant full use of his power to the host as promised, however he will also assume full control of the host. The host will remain alive and able to observe and experience the world, but only through the grace of the King of Lies, and only as a silent passenger. Jareth will have complete autonomy over his host's body and may alter it to suit his physical preferences over the course of several weeks (7 OOC days), after which time he will lose any renown or special privileges associated with the host's original form. Separating the two beings (Jareth and his host) follows the same rules as separating a Bijuu from a Jinchuriki.
Until that time however, his boons are granted at a cost. In keeping with the metaphorical checks and balances of the soul, Jareth awards new hosts with an arbitrary score of 500, and subtracts from that score based on what power his host’s request of him. When that number reaches zero, Jareth no longer sees a use for his host and will drain them of all their lifeforce and leave in search of another host.
