Name: Hyuuga Taiyo
Age: Eighty Nine
Gender: Male
Village: Konohagakure
Rank: Retired, D-Class Equivalent
Title: Kyokujitsu no Hyuuga (Hyuuga’s Rising Sun), Ojii-san (Grandfather)
Clan: Hyuuga
Bloodline: Byakugan
Element(s): N/A
Skill(s): Taijutsu, Bukijutsu
Stats (10/21)
Unique Abilities:
Decades of Experience | Taiyo has been around for quite some time and watched many generations be born and taken from this world. As a former clan leader, Taiyo knows his way around many of the Hyuuga clan’s abilities, bestowing him 900 EXP. However, his body has gotten frail over the years. He must work hard to recover and return his body to its prior glory (900 EXP Debt).
Taijutsu Specialist | By focusing his training primarily on the Physical Arts, Taiyo may learn Taijutsu techniques 1 Rank higher than what his Class typically allows. However, the Ninjutsu techniques he can learn based on his Class is reduced by 1 Rank (i.e. at D-Class, Taiyo could only learn D-Rank Ninjutsu even with the Ninjutsu Skill).
Reactive Tenketsu | Jyuuken is all about Tenketsu management. By learning to precisely control how much chakra is expelled by each and every pore, Taiyo is quickly able to react to when those attempt to remove or steal chakra from him. By intentionally closing off these tenketsu, Taiyo may resist and negate their attempts.
Dance of the 8 Trigrams | The Byakugan is particularly powerful for its range of sight, but its true power lies with its near 360º range of view. While in combat, Taiyo can shift his perspective to focusing on his surroundings to better react to his enemies. This halves his visible range of his Byakugan, but gives him ++ to his Speed as he moves and reacts to his enemies’ movements.
Even the Blind can See | Due to his age, Taiyo’s eyes have unfortunately grown a layer of cataracts over them, leaving him blind. This reduces his Perception stat by one Tier at all times. When he activates his Byakugan, however, he is able to peer through this tissue with no issues. This increases his Perception by one Tier.

There is definitely one word that can best be used to describe Hyuuga Taiyo: old.
At just the cusp of reaching his 90s, the once leader of the honorable Hyuuga clan has definitely seen better days. Though once being capable of fighting amongst the strongest within the shinobi world, Taiyo's days as a ninja began to disperse when his age started to catch up with him. Cataracts stole away his vision into his 60s, arthritis began to limit his mobility into his 70s, and don't even get him started on how wrinkly he has become. It forced the man to take a step back and act as the wise elder as his son and grandchildren took over leadership for him.
In his later years, Taiyo has adopted traits many elders eventually take. He prefers a life of comfort as opposed to the more traditional robes he used to done in his youth. His default go-to attire is that of a changshan constructed of only the finest purple silk. It is embroidered with the marking of his clan across the back and often kept tight to his frame with a red sash tied off at the waist. Dark blue slacks conceal his legs. It is a warm, yet breathable fabric that keeps him stable despite his frequent temperature changes. Simple red cloth slips are worn over his feet. You wouldn't want to see his toes anyway. Similar attire is worn during more formal events, except swapping the color palette to dark greys and blacks.
His once pitch black hair has faded into snow white. Though formerly kept in intricate braids, his arthritic fingers lack the dexterity to style it to his preferred liking. He instead merely pulls his waist-length hair into a bun he wraps on the top of his head with shoulder length strands kept loose to frame his face. Finding shaving difficult without his eyes, he has allowed himself to grow facial hair. A white goatee with occasional specks of black decorate his upper lip and chin before extending down into a thin straight beard that passes his sternum. He has found some comfort in this beard, stroking it idly much like how one might twirl their fingertips through their hair.
Though 89 years of age, Taiyo admittedly does play up his age a bit more than he really needs to. He is a ninja after all. Deception is an important trait to have. He often walks aided by a cane, hunched forward in a kyphotic posture, free hand supporting his lower back, and his feet shuffling in a poor gait as if filled with kinesiophobia. But this is all an act, a ploy to garnish sympathy and underestimation. If times get serious his posture reverts to normal and his bodily motions grow more fluid (or at least as fluid as a someone his age can move). The best showcase of his true strength is if one sees the man undressed. After you get past the normal wrinkles expected with collagen failing, it is easy to see every cut and definition of his musculature. The man never stopped his training. He merely doesn't train as hard and diligently as he once needed to.

- 938 (89yo) - Tsuyo wished to take over the role as clan head by following in her brother's footsteps. Taiyo deemed her unworthy solely due to her being a female and made a recommendation for Rakuyo instead. The two fought with Tsuyo coming out as victor, Rakuyo losing an eye as a consequence. Despite her victory, the elders still valued Rakuyo's experience and appointed him regardless of Tsuyo's triumph. This created some controversial talks within the clan, giving them perhaps the most internal disputes since when the Uchiha separated from their ranks many years prior.
- 849 (Birth) - Youngest brother of 3. His branch was retainer to the Hyuuga clan heads, and held position to replace them should something ever happen to them.
Keeping the boy alive was perhaps their downfall. He was short for his age, appearing much younger than he truly was. For that, they underestimated him. There were talks of kidnapping him and using him as a hostage. But these vile discussions and contemplations opened them up. With the veins bulging laterally to his eyes, Taiyo dashed in between them and tossed a barrage of thirty-two palms. His tiny fingers were able to precisely slip between ribs and hit at crucial Tenketsu that surrounded the heart and lungs. By the time he was done, the two fell to the ground and eventually passed from cardiac arrest. With the tables turned, he joined with his remaining cousins and fought back with strong intensity. By the end of the night, the young boy had killed five Uchiha in total.
Though they had survived, that was just one battle. After proving his capabilities Taiyo was requested to fight more on the battlefield. Whereas most children his age would be playing tag or enjoying their youth, he was in combative situations fighting for his life. This continued on for the next five years until a mutual agreement and treaty resolved the war and placed the world back into peace for the time being. The boy, now well into his teens, was not very pleased with this. He wanted the Uchiha dead. They had cost the Hyuuga far too much. He urged the clan to reconsider but far too many were tired of the bloodshed and violence. It forced him to silence his words. Still, he still trained and harnessed his potential for that day when given the opportunity to fight them once more.
This peace existed for quite some time. It allowed Taiyo opportunity to not only continue growing himself. One such example was when the leader of the clan grew sick. Due to his family’s role as retainer, it was originally offered to his older brother. The man lacked the confidence (and honestly talent) to lead so it was instead given to Taiyo. It is also around this time that the man was married to his wife Himiko. This was solely an arranged marriage, but it helped strengthen his politcal positioning within the clan. The two loved each other enough to get along and had a total of three children together: Niyo and 2 twin girls Tsuko and Tsuki. The two stayed together for 21 years before her life was taken from them all due to a fever that never seemed to break.
Despite his talents as a Hyuuga and his proficiency with Jyuuken, the man never truly got to utilize it. The peace they had prevented many conflicts outside of the occasional scuffle associated with recruitment and being hired as mercenaries. But he knew this peace wouldn’t be forever. His biggest decree made was the removal of the branding of the Branch clan. This allowed everyone to learn those techniques once labeled as secret including the Rotation and 8 Trigram Palm techniques. This was not something that many of his elders agreed with and did fight him with. But the increase in power was noticeable and forced them to shut up after a while.
As he reached his 50s, Taiyo began noticing that his eyes weren’t quite what they used to be. He noticed more strain coming from then when he utilized his Byakugan and that his vision seemed to blur or felt “fuzzy” when he wasn’t. This problem only seemed to grow worse as time progressed and when the clan begin to war with the Uchiha once more, he only felt like he would become a liability. This forced him to step down and allow his son Niyo to take over. He helped the clan out by helping mobilize troops and organizing their positioning.
While attacking an Uchiha stronghold, Niyo unfortunately was wounded greatly and lost his dominant arm as a result. Despite this tragedy, fellow clansmen did great work and allowed them to step into the limelight. One held great eyesight capable of locating and threats while others held enough strength to fight against some of the strongest the Uchiha had to offer. Because of their triumph, Hyuuga Toro is declared the head of the clan. He is eventually pressured for the clan to unify with many other clans to form the village of Konohagakure. Though Taiyo views this as a sign of great weakness, he is encouraged by the thought of peace once more.
At the age of 88, Taiyo acts primarily as an elder in the clan, offering advice whenever it is asked of him. He is essentially retired by this point with cataracts completely taking away his vision when he isn’t utilizing the Byakugan. His biggest call and suggestion since joining Konoha was when Toro dies from a heart disease with his replacement (his son) eventually falling to similar illness mere months later. Toro’s daughter, Tsuyo, wished to uphold their honor and continue her family’s leadership. The conservative Hyuuga definitely disapproved of this, Taiyo leading this charge. He recommend that his grandson Rakuyo talk leadership. He was much older and experienced and might be more respected as a result.
The eventual decision of this was combat. The two essentially were attempting to fight to the death (within reason of course) under the watchful gaze of the Hyuuga. Eventually Tsuyo came out the winner after she damaged Rakuyo’s right eye beyond repair. Though victory was hers, the elders still held more power in this regard and still bestowed Rakuyo with the title. This has created many controversial talks within the clan, perhaps the most disputes since when the Uchiha left their ranks many centuries prior.
Now at 89, Taiyo has decided to perhaps work towards regaining his prior talents and removing the dust from his joints. He greatly disapproves with the conflicts his family holds and wishes to regain his strength should he need to fight to settle their honor once and for all.
- Personality:
- There was once a period in Taiyo's life where he was happy-go-lucky and carefree. He was an innocent soul that saw the best in everyone. But that all changed at the young age of 9 years old when
the fire nation attackedhe was dragged into war and watched his mother and older brother get murdered in front of his eyes by the hands of the Uchiha. This forever ruined his world view. It was not a bright and sunny space where everyone coexisted in peace. It was a brutal, horrible world where only the strongest survived and the evil took full advantage of the weak. His perspective did a complete 180 degrees and ignited a flame within his soul that burned a path of destruction. With a flurry of jabs of his index and middle fingers and well aimed strikes at vital tenketsu, that small 9 year old killed five grown adults and was one of the few able to survive that day.
This fire continued his burn throughout the majority of his ninja career. It acted as a fuel that motivated him to become resilient and capable. He never wanted to be placed in a situation like his family was - helpless and weak. It paved the way for him to eventually become clan leader and a ninja of great skill. The great unfortune of this, however, was his peak years were spent during times of peace. He was not able to affect the world as much as he would have hoped. What he did was to do what he could to instate his ideals into his brethren. He forced change and allowed even the weakest to learn to fight with the best by abolishing archaic rulings that held no modern justification.
But that is the funny thing about fire. If you fan it too much, it will burn through its fuel far too quick. Taiyo noticed this in his mid-fifties as his once powerful and notable eyes (and eventual began to fail) just when his clan needed him the most. Was war was once again engaged, he had become what he never wanted to be: weak. He viewed himself as a liability. Who wanted a Hyuuga who could barely see without the use of his Byakugan? No one. It pained him greatly, but all he could do was step down and offer any assistance that he could while his son took over the reigns in his steed.
The great irony of Taiyo is that he is very steadfast in his ways despite loving the thought of change. He had a very conservative upbringing and holds idealism of a time nearly one century ago. He views that men should be warriors capable of providing for their family while women are the homekeepers that raise the family. It is very troubling for him to imagine a world where those roles can be swapped and interchangeable. The cold-hearted warrior that he is also struggles to understand marriage solely based on love. To him, it is a pairing simply to make a family stronger. Arrangements, money, and authority should be gained by unity of man and woman. To not gain any of those things makes it both a waste of time by both parties and thusly avoided at all costs.
