Chen was rather pleased to see that his comment had hurt Mitsukira's feelings. The goth's goal was to make her feel inadequate and incompetent. While he was often needlessly cruel, he actually had a specific objective in mind. He wanted Mitsukira to believe she was unfit to train Shin. If he could put the idea in her head that she wasn't strong enough to train Shin then maybe she'd stop trying out of consideration for the Murmatsu's own development. He was essentially preying on her good nature and using it against her. As he elaborated though, it became clear that he wasn't doing a good enough job holding her attention.
Is she even listening to a word I'm saying? Chen felt his anger rise as Mitsukira started picking at the fruit bowl in front of them. When he dropped his tactical nuke, however, he got the reaction he was looking for. "
You heard me" he said in response to her retort. The demand was at its core a test. An attempt to gauge how hard she was willing to fight for her students, how comfortable she felt defying Chen since their last encounter, and how easily he could re-asset his dominance.
The abrupt "No" she gave was unexpected. Mitsukira wasn't a combative person by her nature so if she were to resist, he figured it would be by pleading, asking questions, and trying to reason with him. The fact that she wouldn't even entertain his order caused him to narrow his eyes and tilt his head as though she had just spoken to him in a foreign language. However, his annoyed gaze would be matched with equal drive by the Dancing Queen. This was a first. Even back in the throne room, Mitsukira had been more frightened and pliant. He was losing the fear.
That made him angry.
Like a smoldering flame being doused with gasoline, Chen's hatred for the woman and all she stood for began to rage in his spirit. Either the relationship between the two of them was far deeper than he had initially realized, or more likely, his worst fears had been realized. She thought him weak. Powerless. A young boy no longer worthy of her respect or attention. The shift had begun ever since he had nearly been knocked out by her in battle and was accelerated by his own admission of weakness at this very meeting. It never occurred to him that Mitsukira truly wanted to protect Shin. He saw her defiance as a slight against his authority and power. Chen knew what happened when people lost respect for you. You were either the predator or the prey and he had spent far too long living as the prey. Never again. Chen leapt out of his chair so suddenly than it fell over. He knocked away the fruit bowl that sat in front of them and sent its contents spilling across the ground.
No distractions. You WILL hear me this time. Chen leapt across the table. He wasn't particularly fast or agile in comparison to other shinobi, but it was just a regular conference table and so he was able to clear it without much trouble. Chen was now standing directly beside Mitsukira's right.
He slammed both hands down on the table and leaned in until their faces were mere inches apart. "
I see sucking up to Yui and Masaru has you barking like the little bitch you are." Chen had never cursed at Mitsukira like that before. It might seem like an insignificant line to cross, but it was rather meaningful. He despised her and everything she stood for, but she was a kunoichi in his village and she was married to his sensei. There were certain things he could not and would not say to her as a matter of respect. That was gone now for she had committed a grave sin against him. Mitsukira was the only person he had met that was afraid of him to such an extent. She took him seriously. She obeyed him. She didn't see him like a vulnerable little boy, but as a young man whose word was as unbreakable as the Will of Stone. It was perversely the greatest gift he had been given by anyone, arguably even Masaru. Now he was going to lose that just like he lost his sensei. "
Let me explain this so that you understand" there was a trembling hatred in his voice. She had asked him to channel his anger towards her and now she was going to face the full brunt of it. "
You don't get to refuse me on this. Shin is apparently one of our most promising shinobi and I won't have you fuck up his progress with your bullshit nindo. This isn't just for his own good.....its a matter of national security which is my jurisdiction. You will NOT train him and if you think I'm going to let you disrespect me a second time then I think its time you see what I'm really capable of...." Chen would be desperately searching Mitsukira's face for a sign as to whether he had stolen back the fear that was rightfully his. He needed it to survive. If he could not get the weakest Iwa-Nin to listen to him, then what good was he? What had Masaru spent years training him for? Was it all just a waste? Was he the same orphaned runt that the Tatsudashi had picked up on the outskirts of Tsuchi no Kuni? Chen needed to know where he stood and he could only surmise it by Mitsu's expression. Knowing her, she was probably going to try and look away. She might make herself smaller, try to get out of the chair, or take some other non-confrontational or evasive action. If she tried to get up, he'd shove her back down and if she looked away, he'd shout "
Don't turn away!" even going so far as to attempt an underhanded grab of her jaw so that he could pull her face towards him.
If and when Mitsukira looked at her husband's one and only disciple, she'd see the hatred and desperation in his eyes. It was the look of someone possessed. Chen knew what it was like to be frail and at the mercy of others. He was willing to do anything to never have to feel that way again. He would hurt anyone and destroy anything. Mitsukira's defiance represented a return to the past to him. A past that was too painful for him to confront. He'd rather die. Chen was breathing hard now and it took all of his willpower not to strike Mitsu down right then and there. He wanted to hurt her, but he knew that now was not the time nor place. There were witnesses in the building and if he started a fight in the middle of the country against a presumably well-liked kunoichi, then it would be the end of his career. Chen's loss to Ashitaka was humiliation enough for the country. He had enemies that would love nothing more than to throw out a weak alien invader. There would be no trial and no opportunity to present a justification. Not that one existed anyways. Iwa had just received its independence and was trying to demonstrate on the world stage that it was a stable sovereign. They couldn't afford a Civil War to break out just before the Summit. Iwa had also already lost two leaders to the plague. It had been a blow to their sense of cohesion, but they had managed. If he faltered now then they could kiss that blessing goodbye. The village would not survive his off-brand coup attempt and so he was left with no choice but to restrain himself. "
You haven't seen me angry yet Mitsukira. I will take everything that you love and turn it into ash. Don't you ever disobey a direct order from me. For Masaru's sake, I'll give you a chance to reconsider. If Shin isn't off your squad before the Summit ends....there will be consequences"
Chen would then back off from the sweet albino and stomp off in the direction of the door. On his way out, he'd punch the wall with all his might. The act barely left a dent but his knuckles were bruised and bloody. It hurt but that was good. It kept his composure. Chen had always been filled with passive disgust for the world around him but this was one of the few times where that disgust ran red hot. It was uncomfortable and the pain gave him something else to focus on other than his emotions. He stormed out of the room and slammed the door behind him. He'd leave Mitsukira alone with her thoughts and with his threats.
