Yoru Slim hummed to himself as he looked the receipt over for the supplies he'd just bought, it was an awful lot. Then again, he was still just a Genin, and with only a small starting salary to work with. What's more, there was a more pressing issue he had to contend with: he was a puppet user who did not yet have an actual puppet to use. This, more than any other factor, made the young man ultimately nod his head. "Very well. That will do fine." He simply said, watching the rather eager merchant's eyes widen. "Thank you, young lord Uzumaki!" He said, watching as the black nails of the pale teen reached to pull out a checkbook. He paused though at hearing the clan name being used in place of his self-assigned one, frowning. "It's slim. Yoru Slim. Remember it. The check will bounce if you don't." He said with a swift click of his tongue, eyeing the merchant with a modicum of disapproval. The old man nodded apologetically, "A-A thousand pardons young lord Uz- erm, Slim. Your business is very appreciated. It has been a long time since I have seen a puppet master in Kirigakure. It is good to see one of your kind again." The owner stated, rubbing his hands somewhat nervously, backpedalling to stay in the customers good graces. Yoru frowned a little more, "Your kind?" he echoed as a question, raising an eyebrow but saying no more. The merchant opened his mouth, but the red-haired-youth's voice spoke for him, "That's very good, very fine. I'll be here in the future for more materials. I'll have them loaded into the cart outside." Yoru spoke, signing the check and leaving the small merchant's store.
Some time passed after that, Yoru had used a horse to carry the materials and cart through the market streets of Kirigakure. He got a few odd looks here and there, particularly for having a quantifable mountain of wood and wire, but nothing really strange beyond that. He had a vision for his first puppet, it just happened to also require a great deal of materials to actually create it. Hell, with the Chunin Exams getting closer with each day, he was damn near scrambling to get something ready for use. If he had more time and money, he could have gotten more to craft additional creations- but that simply was not the case. He was here and this was now, and this was what he had to work with to build a coherent fighting strategy out of.
These thoughts were put on pause though as Yoru's cart passed a nearby canal, one of the many that passed through Kiri. "Help! Somebody!" They cried. The sound caught Yoru off-guard a tad, just for how sudden it was. He pulled on the reigns of the horse, looking around from atop the cart he'd been driving slowly. Sure enough, after a few moments of surveying the quiet canal-side road, he could spot a young child flailing about in the water, struggling to stay afloat. Curious, but also cautious, Yoru stepped down from the cart, walking a short distance to get a better look with his perception. He peered down at the waterside, his wariness increasing. For one, the water wasn't moving that fast, for two, there was nobody else nearby, for three, Yoru could tell after coming a bit closer that the child was very obviously the product of a genjutsu... But if that was the case then...
'Neigh!'
Yoru whipped around, watching as a couple of kids, no more than 10 or 11 possibly, grabbed the reigns to the horse pulling the Genin's cart. "Go, go, go!" They yelled, cracking the reigns and prompting the horse to gallop at full speed. Swearing, the teen shouted for the troublemakers to stop a very literal crime. He sprinted as fast as his legs could carry, but was unable to catch the faster legs of the thoroughbred work horse running away at full speed, with all of his puppet supplies in tow! "Stupid dummy! Your booty is ours now!" The wannabe pirates jeered, making obscenities over their shoulders at Yoru, feeling confident the teen couldn't catch up. Sure enough, the trio of kids rode off, leaving Yoru in the dust.
Well shit, now what? He had to get those supplies back. If he didn't he was done for.
