Contract Name:[/color] The Uchigawa Akuma (Lit. "Inner Demons")
Type: Creature, Spirit
Specimen: Cathartidae Phantasmica;
Aliases: "Inner Demons", "Akuma", "Vulture"
When anguished and confined, people do rebellious, even desperate things. Irui in his quest for unbridled freedom and escape from the cage of his clan, sought it from within by attempting to inoculate himself with Genjutsu. Angry and hungry to prove himself, Irui cast the Summoning technique, and brought out his Inner Demons.
The Uchigawa Akuma are creatures brought forth from the Realm of Dreams and Nightmares, taking on both the form of man and avian to manifest themselves. The lowest ranks of the Inner Demons closely resemble condors, whose feathers appear wreathed in black smoke. All of the Akuma are capable of some degree of flight. Theloc can take on the guise of a human, often as a doppelganger of the original victim, while others are distinctly covered in black feathers, sporting a bone white, beaked mask. Neither apparition or physical being, they are perpetually Ravenous, and only the secrets, thoughts and dreams of their victims provides sustenance.
Each member of the contract bears distinct avian and humanoid features; with long, slender aerodynamic forms, covered in black, white, or ash-grey plumage. The wings of the creatures are one of their most pronounced features-- being nearly double the height of the individual-- with a fairly wide wingspan. At the "elbow" of each wing are their hands, enabling complex tool use and flight. Beneath their feathers, the Akuma flesh bears typical avian characteristics, particularly along the legs with standard rough skin. They each walk on their toes, and possess digitigrade feet and talons. These characteristics extend to their hands as well; bearing four slender, long fingers with a makeshift thumb, each tipped with a small claw. Curiously, all of the Inner Demon's do not sport the typical head of an avian; each instead is adorned with an ivory skull-like mask that encapsulates the head, and remains fully articulated despite no connections to muscles. Each mask bears a hooked beak, that opens and closes naturally. Several members exhibit horns on the side of their mask, others have carvings, markings, and other decorations.
At their most docile, they are tellers of stories, wisdom, and knowledge; fair-natured, and weavers of pleasant dreams and deep sleep. At their worst, the Akuma are engineers of atrocities, twisters of thoughts, and sire to nightmares. In the world of the Shinobi, people idolize their Kage, and if such thoughts exist, then so too do nightmares, and its those closely guarded fears that the Akuma seek. Only the Uchigawa Akuma can reach into minds and extract the deepest fears; bringing them into reality and giving them form. At a cost of their profound powers, the Akuma's tangibility and tether to reality has been torn asunder and eroded. This swirl of smoke, bone, and feathers that wreathes the Akuma only adds to their enigmatic origins, and serves as a hallmark of their supernatural powers.
As dwellers of the Realm of Dreams, the Uchigawa Akuma are at their most potent when preying upon those "who are closest to the spiritual plane", as Irui put it. In other words, these demons excel at feasting on the sleeping, comatose, and those immobilized with illusions. Always seeking to balance their Yin and Yang essence, the techniques employed by the Akuma not only target the five senses, but also take on a life of their own. Their Genjutsu is incorporated into techniques to extract memories, shatter the mind, and twist the physical nature of living beings. The Akuma are equally adept with Wind Release and the Medical Arts of Ijutsu-- seeing within it immense inspiration, and an opening into the flesh-and-bone mechanisms of the human body. There is a keen intersection here; where the intimate knowledge of mind and body meet; every sensation in sleep is a product of the body, and every thought has ramifications for the flesh.
The exact origin of the Akuma has been a subject of debate among Kumogakure's ninjutsu experts, and has proven to be particularly vexing for psychologists. According to Kumogakure's Department of Summonings that catalogues and researches all creatures registered for summoning, the Akuma hint at inner turmoil within Irui. As the Akuma manifested as Vultures, they suggest that Irui possesses an affinity for avians, and the Griffon Vulture is commonly sighted in the Land of Lightning. However, there is no traditional "Summoning Contract" for these creatures, at least none that has been produced. The Department looked to historical accounts of Demon Summonings, and while rare, all occurred from Shinobi with a high aptitude for Genjutsu and Yin Release. Tayuya, of the Hidden Sound, summoned a trio of Oni, which in retrospect were more likely a manifestation of her "willful ignorance". In Irui's case, the Inner Demon's are quite literally his Inner Demons freed from his mind.
In exchange for freeing the mind, the Akuma offer to indulge with their powers-- a win-win as Irui sees it. The Uchinaru Akuma crave freedom as much as Irui; passionate and ambitious, they are willing to do anything to cement their foothold in the mortal world. Here in the physical plane is where secrets, dreams, thoughts, and ideas begin; where the spirit they crave is freshest. They allow Irui to summon them to assist him in his goals if he allows them to feast; for every moment the Uchigawa Akuma are witnessed by man, their image is burned into memory, opening new minds for them to indulge in, and plunder.
When the Akuma speak of their indulgences, it can be entertainment from the most innocent and whimsical, to outright carnal ecstasy and bloodsoaked chaos. The more they generate, the better their hunting grounds. To this end, the Akuma see reality as an illusion, that order inevitably bends to chaos, and that it is better to yield to your darkest thoughts than suppress them. Hierarchy in the real world has no meaning to them; its all titles and pomp, and everyone is a true hedonist at their core. To continue feeding these desires, the Akuma then feed on the thoughts and dreams, always pushing their victims further and further. The Inner Demon, Theloc, arguably the most palatable to the "Caged" (Non-contract holders, as he calls them), can be seen as the gateway drug of the Akuma: enticing mortals with whimsy before diving into their desires; taking pleasure in fulfilling them with illusions.
Element(s): Wind Release
Designated Skill: Ijutsu
Summoning Method:
Summoning Technique || The Caster employs the “Kuchiyose no Jutsu: Summoning Technique”, using their own chakra and blood to call forth a creature of their choosing. The caster strikes a surface, producing a summoning formulae and from it the Inner Demon's materialize.
Dark Release: Summoning Technique || The Caster first absorbs chakra through the Inhaling Maw technique, capturing the opponent’s chakra. The Caster weaves handseals and strikes a surface, producing a strikingly different, burning seal and a flash of blue flame. Summoning’s of rank equal or less than the amount of chakra absorbed deploy to the field with “Ravenous” activated. All Summons have this capability. Ravenous is in progress.
Requirements: The Uchigawa Akuma are a personal Summon of Irui Mikiri, and their name "Inner Demons" naturally implies a psychological origin.
The Uchinaru Akuma possess a unique mechanic, Ravenous. In order to activate this mechanic, the caster must first train Dark Release: Inhaling Maw (A-rank, 750xp). It is through the Inhaling Maw that the caster can absorb the opponent's chakra and transform it into a spiritualism formulae. This process imprints the opponent's essence on the desired Summoning, marking them for the nightmare's machinations. This summoning method is mechanically similar to Summoning: Earth Release: Tracking Fang Technique, albeit with a much different operation and impact.
Drawbacks: Fire Release techniques are considered to be 1-Rank stronger against the Akuma, owing to their semi-intangible state, and desperate hold on reality. Elementally, it's properties diffuse the core of their essence; severing their chakratic tethers.
