Character Appearance: Ryoku is a young man in his mid 20's with a slightly worn expression on his face. He's been a ninja for a while and has seen some things. His short, silver hair frames his kind yet weary face. Dark grey eyes hold compassion for the world and his village, but not for himself. He dresses rather conservatively, in muted, darker colors like browns and dark greens and greys. He is of average height for an adult male, about 5'7. He weighs about the average too, if a little underweight.
Character Personality: Soft-spoken, Ryoku is the kind of guy who likes to sit back and enjoy living in this world. He likes listening to others and doesn't typically have a lot to say, content to listen and make memories. He has serious depression, and lacks a strong sense of self. Instead, he does his best to work hard for the village and his friends to make the world a little better.
He's pretty laid back, not very opinionated, and kind of lacks much of a real personality because of his childhood. Muted, is one way to put his stronger emotions. He's like a rock, strong and solid, dependable, but not good for much else. He refuses to show anger ever. He just bottles it up inside and gets sad instead. He refuses to drink because he's afraid he'll rely on it.
Character History: Ryoku did not have a happy childhood. His earliest coherent memories are of his drunk father beating his mother until her head caved in, blood gushing out onto his little baby face at the tender age of 4. His father blamed him, of course. It was his fault his mother was always defending him. After she passed, the beatings went to him. If he was too loud, it was a beating. If he looked to happy- a beating. Too defiant? A beating. Basically any excuse his dad had was taken out on Ryoku's flesh. For the longest time, Ryoku thought this was normal because it was all he ever knew.
Ryoku wanted to become a ninja so his father couldn't hurt him anymore. He joined the ninja academy, and learned he did not have much talent as a ninja. Still, he worked hard and persevered, all in the hope he could escape one day. It didn't matter in the end because his father drank himself to death by the time Ryoku was 10. He got no closure from this.
Ryoku had realized he would never let himself be like that. Every action he took, he would think "What would dad do?" And then he would do the opposite. He refused to be like his dad. He would never touch alcohol. He would never boast or be loud like his dad. He molded himself into the perfect, quiet child for his own sanity.
After many long years, Ryoku finally graduated the academy at the age of 14. His formerly brown hair had turned nearly white from stress. It would never recover. As a ninja, he took missions where he could help people. He did his best to be a positive influence on the village, and his efforts were recognized and appreciated by many. The world was not like his dad, and Ryoku knew he was doing the right thing by the positive reinforcement he finally got.
His ninja studies still struggled. Team after team, promotion opportunity after opportunity, Ryoku was always left behind. He just wasn't skilled enough. He took ages to learn new things. He felt like he was brain-damaged from the beatings he used to get and probably was. Still, he just did his best, and for him it was enough. Ryoku didn't need fancy awards or a cool vest. He just needed the people around him to be happy.
