Beep, Beep, Beep.  The sounds of an alarm clock ringing incessantly woke a groggy young girl from her slumber.  Reaching out an slender arm she attempted to smash the source of the annoying sound so that she could slip to sleep but to no avail. It seemed her alarm clock was made of extra stern stuff as her hand harmlessly bounced off without leaving a scratch.  After she had crushed a few devices by accident on account of her above average strength it seems that people looking after her had elected to provide her with equipment that was a little more…sturdy.

It was just as well. She needed her alarm if she was going to wake up on time. Otherwise she’d be prone to sleep in.  It wasn’t like she needed to be up at a particular time today but the doctors had told her that it was good for her to have a routine and stick with it when it came to things like this,  that is if she truly intended to continue being a ninja at any rate.  Punctuality was especially valued for a shinobi, being on time could make the difference between succeeding or failing your mission.

Yawn let out the girl as she sat up and gave out a big stretch, using one hand to muss her disheveled hair.   She usually kept it tied up tight in a ponytail but let it loose when it was time for bed, leaving it to spill across her back.   Honestly it was a bit of a pain taking care of it each morning as she took up a brush and began to straighten it out and wrangle it back into place.  But never for a moment did she consider cutting it.   Shorter hair was how she had been forced to wear it when she had been H181K1 and she was loath to anything that would revert her to that dark past in any way.

She was in a better place now, and a better person.  Or at least she liked to think she was better.  She had made friends now, if only a few.  That was something she’d never really had before, Test subjects weren’t allowed time to form interpersonal connections.  Her cell had been a solitary one, just like this room.  The main difference being the lack of bars.   Was she really free or was this just a fleeting dream that she would soon wake from?

Speaking of rooms, Her current one was a Rokujouma otherwise known as a six tatami mat room.  As a ward of the state it was nothing luxurious, just one of many in a shared housing complex for people who had extraneous circumstances like herself.   Some might say it was a bit cramped but compared to the  way she was forced to live before it felt like her to be a palace.  She had room to move, to stretch, a proper bed to sleep on even if it was a folding one for easy storage when not in use.   Best of all, the toilet was in its own separate room rather than just a bucket.  Having to smell your own excrement as you slept was no way to live.

Currently the room was sparsely furnished.  Beyond the bed she owned a small round low sitting table and that was about it.  Resting on the table was a small frame with the girl and her big sister figure Airi pictured together. That was the sole decoration she owned.  Mainly because nobody had given her anything else to display and because the girl still lacked a proper understanding of using money to purchase more things for herself.   Hopefully overtime her room would become more… colorful since if she had a guest over that would probably consider it’s current state rather spartan.

Getting off the bed, the girl's light blue dress gown seemed almost ethereal in the early morning sun. They were… friller then she was used to but infinitely more comfortable then the body suits she had been forced to wear in the past so she couldn’t complain.   They smelled nice too from the soap that had been used to wash them.  Like lilies of the valley.  The laundry lady had been kind to her not using the mass produced industrial grade stuff.

Unceremoniously the girl allowed the gown  to slip off her slim shoulders and flutter lightly to the floor.  Underneath she was naked as the day she was born but so what? As if that was something to be ashamed of.  The concept of modesty was one the girl was not very well acquainted with.  If she somehow by chance saw someone else like this, boy or girl she’d make very little fuss about it.   Because her emotions had been suppressed for so long and the mental damage that had been done to her she had yet to awaken to her sexual side.

Despite that she was still a teenage girl after all. Her body had grown quite a bit since she was a child even despite the malnourishment she had endured.  Quietly she slipped on a black sports bra and boxers. A matching set.  It was annoying to have her chest constrained this way but she’d been told that if she didn’t it could potentially hurt her back as she got older.  More importantly her breasts could get in her way during battle if she just let them hang loose.

Needless to say her lingerie wasn’t sexy in the least.  It was all function over form for this girl, though someone could probably talk her into wearing something more… vivacious with minimal prodding since she was highly impressionable and eager to please.  Thankfully so far she’d only met nice people.  Not the kind that would take advantage of someone as naive and innocent as she was.

The girl didn’t stay in her underwear for long.  She was far too diligent for that. Anyone that did was likely more of a slob.  With reverence she took her uniform off the wall where it had been hanging.   It was practically the only outfit she owned, or it would have been if it wasn't for the fact she had multiple identical copies folded in her closet.   They were a gift from her sister who said that they would look good on her, a gift that she cherished.  Not the most important of the things she owned but they were pretty close.  A shame that wearing them would cause them to eventually wear out but that was better than them going to waste by not using them at all.

Besides, it wasn't like she was going to fit them forever. She was only 16, Or so the doctors had estimated due to her lack of a birth certificate.  Which meant she still had room to grow, at least theoretically.  She wouldn’t mind getting taller…. Maybe.  She was already pretty tall given her age and gender so she wouldn’t want to stick out too much by becoming like a giant or something.  She wouldn’t want to be as big as say, Nakaba’s hulk form.

If there was one area she absolutely didn’t want to grow any larger it was her chest. Her breasts were already plenty large enough in her opinion.  She couldn’t imagine trying to run around while carrying watermelon sized jugs strapped to her at all times.  Talk about a pain in more ways then one.

Someone had once said to her that getting dressed was as easy as apple pie. She wasn’t quite sure about that analogy but she supposed the simple part was correct enough. Or maybe it was just the fact that she didn’t tend to wear outfits that would require assistance to put on.  Either way she usually didn’t have much trouble dressing herself since it was pretty straightforward.  Put your hands through the sleeves and your head thought the neck and bam you’d have a shirt on.  As long as you didn’t mix the three holes up you’d be fine.  And even if you did, well it was a simple enough fix, she knew that from experience after all.

The pants or shorts in this case were even easier since they only had two holes.  That meant there was a lot less room to mess up… well as long as you didn’t somehow put them on backwards or sage forbid upside down.  She always had to double check with the mirror in the bathroom first before she went outside just to be safe.

The hardest part ironically was the tie. The blasted thing was so hard to knot correctly.  Even with her coordination which was above average, she still sometimes had trouble looping it in the right order.

Now that she was dressed finally it was time for some light exercise.  Some calisthenics to start off the day was a great way to warm up and ensure you didn’t cramp up down the road when things got more serious with training.  Fiddling with the alarm clock the girl managed to turn on the built-in radio with a flick of a switch.

Once again thank the sage it was nothing more complicated then that otherwise she’d have trouble operating the device.  If you’d asked her to explain the difference between am and fm she wouldn’t have the foggiest clue.   Thankfully she didn’t have to do any tuneing today since it was already set to her favorite station.

She didn’t know the names of the songs that were playing, nor what musical genre they were from, but they were typically energetic which got her blood pumping as she listened to them which made them the perfect background noise for exercising, at least in her opinion anyway.

1-2-3-4.  Moving with the beat the girl stretched her arms, first left then right before bending the top half of her body forwards reaching out so that she touched the tips of her toes with the tips of her fingers then bending backwards as far as she could, practically forming an arch with her back.   The movements were neither slow nor hurried.  The point here wasn’t to work up a sweet, that would come later.  No this was all about flexibility.

Not that she was some kind of yoga master, or a cat for that matter. Still it was important for her to retain the full range of motion, at least if she intended to remain on active duty.  Any Ninja that couldn’t flex at least this much was either barely a ninja at all or dead.  After all you’d need to be able to wiggle in unconventional ways if you wanted to get yourself out from being tied up.  Well depending on how strong you were and the material the rope was made out of.

She had been captured during the war a couple of times. Luckily whatever the enemy had used to bind her had been either subpar or worn and she had snapped it with ease. She couldn’t count on that happening again next time in the upcoming Chunnin exams.  She had a hunch that it would be easier for the participants to scrounge up quality equipment now with things being relatively peaceful.   After all during war there never, ever seemed to be enough supplies to go around.

Either way it was good to practice other ways to get out of being tied up that didn’t rely on pure brute strength. She might not be the brightest bulb in the shed but even she knew it was better to have more options under your sleeve then less.  Hopefully she wouldn’t be captured in the first place to find out, but she knew she had a tendency to screw up when the fire hit the fan sort to speak.

With her stretching out of the way the girl made her way to the kitchen.  Turning the faucet on the sink, she cupped her hands together to collect some cold water before splashing it on her face.  Not only was it a good way to remove any leftover grogginess but it also served to remove any sweet that had built up from her exercise.   But maybe she should have done that before putting her clothes on since her shirt had gotten a bit damp in the process of splashing herself.

Another lesson learned… well if she could remember it anyway.  The odds were not in her favor since she’d repeated this process for the last several days in a row. Vowing to herself not to do it again but then doing it anyway because the lesson had slipped her mind.  Well it wasn’t like her shirt was totally soaked either so hopefully it would dry out before too long.  Luckily for her the wet part was the black section and not the white one otherwise she might have problems since it would have turned semi-transparent.  Not that there was much to see underneath but still.

That was when the girl felt a rumbling in her stomach.  Now that she was good and awake and had her warm up for the day she was getting more than a little peckish.  Moving from the sink to the refrigerator she opened the door to find that it was surprisingly and disappointingly empty.   It seemed that she had forgotten to pick up any groceries which was just as well since her ability to cook was…questionable.

She could boil water by using an electric kettle and maybe scramble an egg.  Anything more complicated than that tended to get very iffy very fast.  She’d repeatedly attempted to bake cookies but so far all she’d gotten back from the over were black lumps of charcoal.

She had tried to consume them anyhow but they were totally inedible forcing her to spit them back out in disgust.   The worst part was that you couldn’t even joke about how the love she had put into them was too passionate and hot since she didn’t really have those kinds of feelings for anyone in particular.

That said she DID want to feed her big sister some Beef stroganoff since it tasted so good.   Not that she really understood what the stroganoff part meant but the recipe seemed simple enough at first glance from the commercial that she had heard.  Apparently it could even be made without beef, though she wasn’t quite sure how the heck that worked since it had beef in the name.

If she remembered correctly you cut the onions vertically in two then cut the tomatoes horizontally in two.  Sprinkle wheat flour on the meat,  put mushrooms in with the onions then boil it with milk. A rendez-vous with pepper and salt, then finally add a touch of sour cream and it's done.   As long as she picked up the right ingredients at the supermarket later she should be able to manage it, though perhaps it would be smart to test that theory first before attempting to feed any to the Hokage.  The last thing she needed was to be arrested for giving their leader food poisoning.

Quickly the girl jotted down the ingredients she would need onto a notarized list. Without it there was no hope in hell of coming home with the right stuff with the way things quickly slipped her mind.  Heck even the list itself was no guarantee if she ended up forgetting to consult it, but it was better to have at least that one extra layer of insurance then none at all.

She had no choice then, if she didn’t have any food in the fridge then it was time to head to the building's cafetera.   When it was open there was always something available for the resistends, well as long as they weren’t too picky about what they were given since the attendants that cooked for them didn’t take requests no matter how reverently they were asked.

That was no real issue for the girl. She was used to substandard fare. When she was a test subject her meals mostly consisted of either  Field rations or moldy bread.    That is when her handlers remembered to feed her in the first place.  You’d think they’d want to keep their subjects well fed for optimal results but well people willing to perform illegal human experiments where's the most ethical to begin with.

They’d probably had budget issues as well considering Hades hadn’t exactly been state sanctioned and they had formed specifically due to Iwa collapsing financially to the point a lot of people had fled and become refugees.  Between that and the various occupations over the years there were a surprising amount of ex-pats from the land of stone like herself.   It was just that some were more loyal to their new home then others.

For her loyalty wasn’t even a question.  While it wasn’t Iwa directly that had experimented on her she didn’t have much of any good memories of that country. It was Airi and by extension Konoha that had saved her from the darkness.  Well at least people that were still part of Iwa couldn’t really call her a traitor since she’d never been an official ninja from that village to begin with at any point in her life.

She’d been so young when the collapse happened that she’d never had a chance to attend the academy.   Her family had moved to a clan outpost and never looked back even when Iwa started to get back on its feet.  Her memory of that time before she had been kidnapped was beyond fuzzy.  Just tiny snippets at best.  She couldn’t remember the important things like her mothers face, or her dad’s lessons.   Like most early childhood memories they had been lost to the sands of time.

If only her memories as a test subject would have the courtesy to do the same.  Sadly the mental scars had been etched so deep into her, all the way to her soul and it seemed unlikely they would ever truly fade.

Before she could leave to get food the Girl had a couple things to take care of. First she turned off the radio so that the noise wouldn’t disturb her neighbors.  Not only was it rude to leave it playing when you weren’t around to listen, apparently it was also a waste of something called electricity.

The girl wasn’t quite entirely sure what this electricity stuff was, just that it could kind of power devices in a similar manner to how chakra could power people.  That and apparently her skin could conduct it when she was in her steel mode.  The idea of becoming a literal lightning rod was an amusing one.  It wasn’t necessarily a weakness the same way her vulnerability to fire was, depending on how she handled it that is.

Poorly and she could fry herself and perhaps her teammates too.  But with a bit of practice perhaps she could turn her conductivity into a weapon to wield. It wouldn’t turn her into that yellow mouse from the cartoon she had seen but she might be able to zap somebody even without having the raiton element herself.

Next she checked to make sure she hadn’t accidentally left anything like the stove or the sink running.  After all it wasn’t like she wanted her house to burn down or flood in her absence.  She wasn’t so clumsy or forgetful that she left stuff running on the regular but given how stuff did slip her mind it was better to be safe than sorry.

Was there anything else she had forgotten to check?  The refrigerator perhaps…  No wait that was supposed to be left on all the time.  Not that there was anything inside of it to spoil at the moment.  Come to think of it, it would be a good idea to pour some water into a bottle and place it into the fridge so she had something cold to drink later.    The girl took a moment to do just that, satisfied by her rare moment of foresight.

Not that she couldn’t just pour some right from the tap into a cup and drink it on the spot, but that tended to be somewhat warmer then water that had been left in a fridge for a while which meant it wasn’t as refreshing or satisfying.

It was then that she realized that maybe she should have two water bottles instead of only one.  Then she could have one to take with her on her excursions and then rotate it with the second one so she could have cold water to drink at night since if she refrilled the first bottle once she got home, it would take a couple hours before it was properly cool enough to use. Great, there goes another thing to add to her shopping list which was starting to look a little long to her eyes. She wasn’t used to picking up more than the barest minimum.

“Oh well, better luck next time.” the girl grumbled to herself as she shut the fridge door.  No use leaving it open and cooling her entire apartment down.  Someone had warned her that it could even ice everything in her room over if she left it open long enough.  A fact that was obviously untrue to most might as well be gospel as far as Hibiki was concerned. She didn’t and wouldn't know better until she experienced it otherwise for herself first hand.

Finding nothing amiss within her apartment, the girl went outside the door. Sadly being part of a complex and on the second floor there was no mailbox waiting outside the entryway for her. No mailman was dedicated enough to  hand deliver to dozens of different rooms if they didn’t absolutely have to.   If she wanted to check to see if a morning newspaper had been left for her she’d have to go to the community mailbox located beside the front entrance way on the ground level.

Moving to lock the door the girl realized she had left the key behind on her round table. With a sigh she opened the door, marching through the apartment with long strides. She quickly collected the keys with a rough swipe of dominant right hand before turning and marching back out for the second time that day.  Inserting the key into the lock, it gave a satisfying click as she turned it.

As far as security went it wasn’t much to write home about.  Someone with enough coordination could easily pick the lock without much trouble, baring that the less subtle type like herself could easily smash a hole in the door with a swift steel fisted punch.  She wasn’t too worried about it since it wasn’t like there was a lot inside to take,  It was more that she found the idea of someone lurking into her private space while she was away somewhat unsettling.

Ignoring the stairs which where a bit on the rickety side given the age of the building, the girl placed a hand on the railing and while pushing against the floor with her feet so that she could vault over the obstruction and into the open air.  It was only one story high after all, that was a hight someone as tough as her could easily withstand falling.

She was already tougher than when she had first come to this village thanks to all the training she had done with Nao and her other friends.  Being used almost like a pseudo punching bag as she deliberately tanked one hit after another tended to have that effect.   If she kept up her strength and endurance training it wouldn’t be long before she could jump out of a window several stories higher and land without issue, though she’d have to be careful not to leave a creator in the ground given her weight was increased when she was steeled up.

She already had enough work to do later, filling in a 50 meter wide and who knew how deep hole  in the ground leftover from the recent bijuu attack. She didn’t need to go around adding more potholes to be cleaned up.

Making her way from the spot where she had landed to the cafetera the girl shifted restlessly on her feet back and forth as she waited for her turn to come up from the back of a fairly long line.   Breakfast it seemed was the busiest meal of the day and though the girl had thought she had woken up at a good time apparently she was far from what could be considered to be an early riser.   Why on earth would she want to wake up before 7am to begin with?  It wasn’t like much of anything would be open before then so she didn’t see the point.

The funny thing was no matter the waiting time to be served nobody in line was belligerent enough to try and force their way to the front or cause some sort of disturbance by demanding to be served first.   There were some fairly tough looking and burly people in line so why were they being so well behaved?  The answer was simple. They all feared the Matron’s wrath.

She was usually the sweetest thing, but she also had her bitter side and was a terror to behold when she got angry.  The first time someone caused trouble would usually be their last as one withering glare from the matron was usually more than enough to put them in their place. As she waited  the girl sighed…. When would it be her turn?

“Oh hello deary, are you here for breakfast again?” asked the matron of the cafeteria once the girls turn finally rolled around.  The woman speaking was also the one who cooked most of the food.  She was surprisingly young for someone in that role looking to be only in her mid twenties to early thirties at best.  The first thing that came to mind for the girl when she pictured someone serving food  in a cafeteria  was a vision of an old, though perhaps not quite wrinkled yet crone.

The girl was sure she’d heard the woman's name at least once before but it hadn’t quite stuck in her mind.   Either way the matron was fond of the girl, likely because the girl ate pretty much everything she was given without complaint and found it so delicious that she would often go back for second or even thirds.

“You betcha mam.  Please give me a big one today, I’m starving.” said the girl. Even as she spoke a small string of drool was dangling from the corner of her mouth.  The smell wafting up from behind the counter was so enticing that she couldn’t help but look forward to her coming meal.
