Mission
He tried to keep a straight face, but it was difficult to hide the disappointment. Ofcourse, Hotaru hadn't expected go to war anytime soon, but he had at least expected his first mission to be a little bit more glamorous than shadowing a chuunin during guard duty. He had the moves, right? He could be tagging along with a chuunin to go bandit-hunting? Or put down some rabid wolves? Watching people go in and out of the city for 8 hours straight felt like a waste of his skillset. Still, a true shinobi presses on and does what needs to be done regardless of the circumstances - and regardless of how mundane the task is. Hotaru, ofcourse, was a true shinobi.
Hibiki was a nice fellow who greeted Hotaru warmly and talked him through the ins and outs of guard duty. For the most part, it was as boring as he expected. You keep an eye out, check the identities of people entering and leaving and rummage through the occasional cart to check for illegal goods. He had to admit, however, that Hibiki almost made it look interesting. The chuunin described and performed his task with admirable enthousiasm, and to his credit: He made a few valid points. While most days were indeed quite uneventfull, even one wrong person or item slipping into the village could have disastrous consequences. There needs to be someone vigilant enough to catch that rare person or item. In a way, being on guard duty isn't easy and makes you partially responsible for the safety of the entire village.
By the end of the day, Hibiki and Hotaru felt confident enough to let the genin do a few checks on his own. Nothing noteworthy happened, but it was nice to get a feeling of the routine of the average gate guard. As the sun set, Hotaru thanked Hibiki for his time and teachings and left. It might not have been a particularly thrilling day, but he headed home a little wiser.
