Creative tinkerer: Due to his financial situation, Hotaru has always had a difficult time paying for his shinobi essentials, let alone the many armours he chews through as a taijutsu specialist. Still, he felt like he needed the best gear his could possibly get his hands on. As a cost effective solution, he began piecing together his own bits of equipment and has become quite adapt at making relatively high quality gear for someone of his experience level. Hotaru is capable of crafting gear one rank above what his current experience level normally allows, but when crafting gear this way he spends 50% extra money in the process, bargaining for scraps of high quality material.
Seal-less Ninjutsu (UA): Hotaru is an instinctive fighter with a great degree of control over both his body as well as his chakra. This allows him to perform ninjutsu techniques without having to form hand seals, although he is still required to use potential triggers and focus chakra for an amount of time equal to what it would have taken him to form hand seals. Hotarus fighting style makes good use of this ability by fluidly combining taijutsu and ninjutsu to keep opponents on their toes.
Appearance:
Like a lot of kids in their early teens, Hotaru is somewhat disproportionate looking. With his lanky stature and unusually long arms and legs, he looks somewhat fragile. As is often the case in the shinobi world however, looks can be deceiving. Hotaru is tough as nails and, despite his lack of bulging muscles, puts up a surprisingly good fights.
Being a frontline fighter first and foremost, Hotaru wears pieces of armour when he is on duty. While he isn’t particularly wealthy, Hotaru is a bit of a tinkerer and his outfit usually consists of different pieces of cloth, leather and sheath metal that he managed scavenge here and there. During his time off, he often sports a short, red kimono, black pants and wooden sandals.
Hotaru isn’t a particularly handsome kid, with his bony facial structure, large ears and scruffy blonde hair. His eyes however, most will agree, are striking. Light brown with small hints of orange, they burn with intensity and passion that betray the guy that lies underneath.
History:
Hotaru grew up in a small hamlet just outside Konohagakure. His father was a weaponsmith who tried to share his love for smithing with his son. Rather than an interest in weapons however, young Hotaru would dream about the shinobi that would wear use. From early on, he seemed dissatisfied with the rural life and aspired to be a shinobi. A famous shinobi, who wouldn’t just be a cog in the machine, but a myth.
His parents managed to scrape by enough money to get Hotaru to attend to the academy. He wasn’t quite as gifted as the kids from the local clans, but what he lacked in family history or bloodline limits, he made up for in enthusiasm and perseverance. Hotaru proved to be an intuitive and fiery sparring partner in particular, with his strong affinity with fire release allowing him to mix his kicks and blows with burst of hot flames. While having a hard time keeping up with the group in terms of general nin- and genjutsu, Hotaru managed to score well enough overall to pass with flying colours and land a position as a genin in the village.
Hotaru has yet to do his first mission, but he is filled with anticipation. He dons the best gear he could piece together and keeps a rigorous training schedule to stay in tip-top shape. He’s ready to make his mark as a shinobi.
Personality:
Hotaru is an energetic, optimistic, some would say somewhat boisterous boy. Having grown up in the shadow of Konohagakure, he has always been dissatisfied with being in the background. The one thing he wants more than anything is to become the shinobi stuff of legends; To be seen. He moved into the village and became a genin to make that happen.
He’s a no-nonsense type of shinobi, both in and out of combat. While not particularly clever or dumb, he tends to approach each problem rather directly and tactless, figuring thing out as he goes along. Besides his brash way of going about, he’s a kind, supporting and genuine guy. He doesn’t see competition and doesn’t hold grudges. While he’s determined to climb into the spotlight, he’s determined to lift the people around him up as well.
There’s not necessarily a lot of distinction between work and spare time or Hotaru. He genuinely enjoys training and being on missions. In general, his days are crammed with all sorts of tasks, schedules and missions in a system that he lovingly calls his “shinobi life”. Occasionally he’ll grab a bite to eat with friends or, when he’s all alone, climb up the cliffs to watch over the village, blow bubbles and dream about what might become.
