The Chikamatsu clan (近松一族, Chikamatsu ichizoku) are a clan native to the Land of Wind, but now reside in Iwagakure. They are descendants of those who trained diligently under Monzaemon Chikamatsu. Less a true clan in a biologically related sense and more a gathering of some of the finest craftsman native to the Land of Wind, they take great pride in their skills as craftsman and creators and are known for their high quality products. They are not known for their loyalty to anyone but the highest bidder.

    Background

The Chikamatsu's earliest records began to show with the rise of Monzaemon Chikamatsu in the year 469 AS. The man was a wandering monk who traveled all over the Land of Wind, teaching the long since thought dead ways of Harikēn, and by extension, Hagoromo Otsutsuki. He sought to unite the people amidst the economic depression that afflicted their desert landscape through togetherness and unity in a way that all creatures sought: entertainment. He helped cultivate a new type of theatre that fascinated many and drew many to his side. This was made possible through the chakra thread technique he had managed to create, performing something he called "bunraku" making use of puppets.

Throughout the depression, Monzaemon traveled the land while preaching Harikēn's way. And though he was on the search for more of Harikēn's teachings wherever they might have been, seeking to try to preserve them, at some point he became more focused on just trying to help the people of the land, wishing to offer them some sort of salvage.

People grew to admire the monk. To respect him. To revere him. They too wished to learn this puppet manipulation technique. They wanted to continue on those puppet shows after he had left. Monzaemon agreed but he only agreed to teach his most dedicated of followers. By this point, plenty of shinobi were weaponizing techniques for the purpose of their conflicts. Monzaemon didn't want that to happen with the Puppet Technique, which he felt should be used for the purpose of entertainment, a reminder of what people had. Richly woven stories that connected to Harikēn's teachings through the use of "actors" built with love and care. That was what the Puppet Technique was.

As time progressed, so too did the Land of Wind under the Kazehana Emirate. Monzaemon was not a fan of the emirate and their war-mongering ways. The depression the land entered was through their shortcomings to begin with. But because things were beginning to improve, Monzaemon felt more comfortable even going so far as to show his closest desciples how to build their own puppets for this bunraku stage theatre.

Things seemed to be going well. Monzaemon was a fairly old at this point as far as shinobi went. He had retired as a recluse in a small settlement in Kaze no Kuni, where he acted as a defacto head, helping promote good will. Many of his closest followers had followed him here. He had a sizable following at this point so it was difficult to know who was coming and going, but he approved of the idea of others to travel to better learn and educate themselves, as word as spread the word of Harikēn.

And yet that freedom would prove to be his undoing as one of his own disciples came one day to this very same settlement. A representive of the Kazehana Emirate. Threatening the lives of everyone here unless Monzaemon abided by his demands. Without hesitation, Monzaemon agreed to come with him. From there, the man was brought to construct weapons for the Emirate to use in their war. His puppets were incredibly complex, but this past desciple had figured out that there were mechanisms in use that could have very easily been used to fill weapons and accused Monzaemon of not being the saint he tried to paint himself as, threatening to leak that to the public. Even if Monzaemon tried protesting it, it was his word versus the Emirate, and the disciple claimed to have more evidence.

With his hands tied, Monzaemon was forced to create the weapons that the Kazehana emirate would use to wage their wars across the land. He created a number of high quality weapons, but the Chikamatsu Collection of 10 Puppets would perhaps to go one to become his most infamous weapon, wielded by his own desciple. The disciple contributed greatly in battles henceforth while Monzaemon slaved away, creating a number of weapons and puppets to aid the Kazehana Emirate while his own people went on to struggle to keep things together, falling back into a situation of low finances due to their reliance on their master.

Those who knew how to create puppets turned to creating weapons as well. Armor. They devised various devices. They learned. They studied. They did everything that they could in order to attempt to survive. Many people of this settlement began to die out, but none gave up hope that the Favored Teacher would return to them, viewing his capture for their sake.

But they knew they were all on their own.

While the Kazehana sought to bring foreign countries under their throne, the Chikamatsu as they referred to themselves as a token of gratitude to their master began to focus exclusively on self improvement for their crafts and settlement while the Kazehana remained otherwise oblivious to them, going undetected as they fully embraced one of the core tenants that Monzaemon had instilled into them. "Make use of what you have and never take it for granted. Pass on what you don't need onto another."

Decades passed, now in the year 580 AS, as the Chikamatsu were finally beginning to become known for their quality products due to trade with various travelers. The Kazehana offered to pay for their services but were declined, the people having not yet forgotten what happened to Monzaemon. Nor did they forgive.

The Kazehana Emirate in response made things significantly harder on the clan. They blocked trade routes passing through their settlement as a penalty for disobeying them. After they failed to take over the Leaf, the Emirate offered them one more chance or they would take them by force. The Kazehana, desperate at this point, caved in and agreed to join the Kazehana in the year 602 AS.

However, they were paid incredibly cheap for their services while the emirate began to plan its next move for the Land of Stone instead. It wasn't enough to survive and so they still ended up needing to rely on one another just to make due. A few above-average craftsman were sent to the Land of Stone amongst the bed of spies as craftsman as part of the network of spies, recieving proper training before being sent out.

When the coup was successful, only then did the Chikamatsu start actually earning some repute and were paid accordingly for their work. Except they were paid more than they ever had been before. This newfound wealth combined with the years since Monzaemon's death had shifted his original belief he tried passing onto others, being shortened considerably. "Make use of what you have."

The Chikamatsu began to view it as the Favored Teacher encouraging them to use their skills to their fullest to make as much money as possible. Their crafts were expensive and they always wanted to move onto bigger and better things. And so that was what they did. They continued to hone their craft, their skill. Some even felt so confident as to take their abilities and pursue the life of shinobi, taking on extra income to better pursue their hobbies. The clan decided that the wealth of an individual was the wealth of the clan at large, and they used this concept to grow vast amounts of wealth with the training received by those who had become shinobi, even managed to conceal their total wealth accumulated from the Kazehana empire.

Things were going well for them for a century until the famine struck. The Chikamatsu at this point had to use much of their savings to protect themselves, no longer having an interest in protecting others but instead only sought to serve their own self interests. What money they did have went into either procuring what little food was available or in ways to research new ways to cultivate food in some way. This dramatically depleated the clans savings, nearly sending them back to the bottom again but they managed to survive without losing even 5% of their people.

When the Kazehana went to war against the Inazuma, however, they were in a rough position and were trying to get their funds back again. This war single handedly brought them back as their services were once again required in great amounts. They were able to get back on their feet thanks to the Kazehana paying for their weapons and armor. And though it ended with a truce, they were able to later get that land back. This seemed to put them in a good position again.

This served to put a target on their head, who was assassinated during the time of Bloody Emir during 810 A.S. With his death, the clan was in a state of confusion. He lacked any heirs as he was still young and though he had a wife, she wasn't a skilled business type; a kunoichi. The clan was in dissaray until they came up with a solution. Backlogging who was able to contribute the most to the clan, a new head was appointed with this decidedly becoming the new approach; whoever amonsgt the Chikamatsu had earned and contributed the most money into the clan itself prior to the previous head stepping down would become the new head. There would be no confusion or panic this way and a head would always be known. Should they act in a selfish manner, they would not be fit for the role and the second who had contributed the most suited would instead become the head.

The chaos involving Bloody Emir, combined with the clan's wealth, allowed them to distance themselves from things, seeing no point in helping the Kazehana after it was one of their own that had been appointed to power. They did not help the Kazehana during the rebellion, though they also did not aid the rebels. Instead they remained completely neutral and simply focused on selling puppets to wealthy, aristocratic people. These puppets were not weapons, but the Chikamatsu had developed a name for themselves as excellent merchants and so their products were highly vaunted by many.

With everything going wrong for the Kazehana by this point, what with the rebellion in the Land of Stone and the Chikamatsu refusing to cooperate with them, the Land of Wind was in a poor situation. However, the Chikamatsu yet prospered, thanks in part to all of the savings they had managed to set up by this point as well as the fact they were selling to foreign lands at this point, careful not to sell weaponry so as to earn the ire of the Kazehana. Wealthy as they were, they were not the rulers and so they had to proceed with caution.

They helped Sunagakure if for no other reason they feared the coming of the other great nations, now that clans were beginning to unify and what it would mean if the Land of Wind was to come under invasion. It was this fear that led into the clan having heavy talks of elevating their skill with the puppet technique. It turned out to be a good time, because with the collapse of Sunagakure, the clan themselves began to lose everything, having invested much into the village in hopes that it might become a more fortified area for them to survive.

With Sunagakure's economic collapse and a large portion of their savings depleted, they focused on defending themselves and their lands through the puppet technique. Various ways were used to do just that. Some took to poisons and explosives while others fine tuned mechanisms. They still operated as merchants but without actual war to serve them, they also acted as mercenaries using the full advantages of the puppet technique to that end. They had already been cultvating this technique but now they were able to truly make use out of it. The land turned high in banditry and without the funds to procure proper body guards, it became essential to fine tune their skills. For the first time in centuries, their lives were dependent on this.

As they managed to gather more funds, the current clan head -- Tonda Chikamatsu -- decided to take a shot and began investing heavily into Sunagakure's reconstruction alongside Nozumi as small benefactor. He thought it would be a good chance to have the Chikamatsu generations learn more about shinobi life, something that he had grown to respect as a result of his wife's contributions during that period. While it means aligning oneself with a terrorist, Tonda believed there was good money to be found and it had long term benefits for the clan as well given the clan's history with the Kazehana, someone who was willing to expose some of the crimes the empire had comitted was something he was willing to work alongside. However, his contributions are done in secret, so as to not expose the clan for aligning with a terrorist organization.

Not long after the death of Tonda's wife, word spread about Sunagakure likely being given up willingly by the current Kazekage to Iwagakure. Tonda was in vehement opposition to this and was set to talk to the Kazekage before it was finallized, but he was killed and Shirogane Chikamatsu became the next clan head. Shirogane has kept the clan's finances strong and abides by the clan's motto of "Make use of what you have." He is a known pragmatic man and a fairly respected shinobi of Iwagakure, though under his leadership, the clan's loyalty is best described as... iffy.

    Clan Characteristics

As they are less of a blood unified clan and more of a tightnit community, there aren't too many things that tie the members together visually. Instead, what exists as the common link is the indidivual talent that members possess for crafting, having effectively bred out those who would be inferior in some way due to the arranged marriages that the clan practices, even to this day centuries later. The clan is known to ostracize anyone who lacks talent for crafting in some way, but especially puppets, as this is where they make a large sum of their money.

As a collective whole, the clan highly values money. In fact, one is not considered an adult until they are able to start generating their own income and can start contributing to the clan in some way. Those who are of a certain age have effectively two choices left to them: they can either join as an apprentice to an experienced Chikamatsu and not make income but are able to learn highly valuable skills until they are chosen by someone and can earn an income that way (the experienced Chikamatsu will still ensure their basic needs are met), or they can join as a shinobi. Both are considered respectable fields of profession, but until one starts contributing to the clan, they will never be considered an adult.

Clan leadership is decided by the one who has earned the most income and whoever has contributed the most to the clan to show their dedication to its people. Of course, one must be part of the Chikamatsu as well. The current head of the clan is allowed to remain as head even if there is someone who has managed to earn more money and contributed more until they step down. Typically the head will step down the moment that knowledge comes to pass, but it is not a hard requirement.

Puppetry plays a big role in the Chikamatsu way of life. As much has changed throughout their half a century, the clan still greatly enjoys bunraku theatre and other types of art. As merchants and artisans themselves, they appreciate an individuals talent and although they believe that the wealth of one is the wealth of many, they strive to teach independence amongst their clan as well as individuality. The clan funds many projects for those amongst their ranks, so contributing to the clan also helps contribute towards its future.

    Abilities

    Bloodline Description

There are two main abilities that the Chikamatsu possess. The first is less any sort of inherent ability or skill, but rather a testament to their name recognition as a predominant supplier of fine weapons, armor, and more importantly, puppets. Their crafts are highly sought after. They are able to purchase their completed puppets for 25% cheaper than most people would be able to, but this is only after they've proven themselves (500 EXP).

The puppet technique having been passed on from generation to generation at this point has resulted in some exceptionally gifted puppeteers over the years. It is effectively ingrained in many and it manifests by users possessing 2 Advantagesin Coordination up until they hit S Rank. At which point, they recieve 2 Advantages in Stamina, a testament to their ability to make these threads last even longer. (500 EXP)

An extension of the their experience, their claims to the ones who have used the Puppet Technique the longest, the Chikamatsu also boast exceptional skill with their craft. Enough to where they can control up to three puppets without ever losing any of their skill (500 EXP).

    Drawbacks

Dedicated exclusively to their kugutsutsukai, the Chikamatsu also perhaps best embody some of the weaknesses with the fighting style. Devoted to their craft as they are, they are incapable of ever learning Taijutsu above C Rank, nor can they take it as a Skill. In addition, all of the Chikamatsu must take the Puppetry skill when starting, as well as at least one secondary Crafting skill before they are S Rank.

Chikamatsu Clan Empty Re: Chikamatsu Clan

Ok, First let me apologize for it taking so long to look at this.  Couple of things to go over on the abilities.

    1) you can remove the exp cost for the reduction to the cost of the puppet, it will be fine for the clan to start with this for free. Additionally, you may add that the members of the clan can craft up to B-Rank puppets without another craft skill also to this one for free, due to their specialization with the puppets.

    2) I am not sure I understand how or why the boost to coord would just switch to stamina like how you described, however if you want to make it were they get the ++ to stamina at the start for the exp cost rather than the coord boost that would be fine.

    3) This one is fine, with the exception that you can lower the cost of this to 250exp rather than 500exp
