The numbers and politics of the situation while difficult, were not soul-crushing. What truly began to wear on him was that his father was dying. No amount of Ijutsu could solve old age and the Senju Clan refused to help prolong Katahshi's life. Nyguyen and his family had visited his bedside and said their goodbyes, but that didn't make it any less easy. When the Hokage had a moment alone with his father, they spoke heart to heart. They talked about life, death, family, duty, and all the other things that Katahshi didn't think was worth speaking to with his son and Nyguyen was afraid to raise with his father. The scene that had played out in the court-dungeon made Katahshi realize what his only son had become over the course of his tenure as the Hokage. For years he had wanted his son to be a fierce, unyielding, and unstoppable warrior like Satomi. It angered him that he had inherited all of his own bookishness with none of the fire. Nyg's disposition was a constant source of tension between them and it took seeing Nyguyen as Hokage and arriving at death's door to finally show him that he was wrong. Nyguyen did have the capacity to be a fighter but without empathy and love in his heart, it would only turn him into the monster that Mack had become. Katahshi knew that before he passed, he'd need to tell his son that. And so, the passing of Nyg's dad was a moment of great sadness but it was also an opportunity for reconciliation.
He explained to Nyguyen that there was a better way. There had to be. Nyguyen offered his own ideas and together they came up with a plan to heal the world of the terror that was the First Shinobi World War. They called it the Great Reset: Build Back Better and while it required the cooperation of the great nations and even shinobi beyond it, they put their hopes in these changes. Before he died, Katahshi whispered a secret in Nyguyen's ear. A secret that cut to the heart of all the questions Nyguyen had about the strangeness of Akihiro's, Satomi's, and even more recently Kimiko's Sharingan. It was an explanation of the hidden powers unlocked by Kazuya and his brother. They had broken new ground in order to protect this family and it was now Nyguyen's responsibility to uphold it. With this last bit of knowledge imparted, Nyguyen's father passed on from this world into the next before his son's very eyes. The Hokage shut his eyes and re-opened them with a totally new perspective on the world. He left his father to rest and be prepared for burial. He knew what he had to do now and there was work to be done.
Nyguyen sat in the chair next to the bed that Ikomiki lay in. The wayward Konoha genin was now the sole surviving member of the original Moonspire Three. He had a mind to kill her right then and there but he decided to hold off for the time being. They were still at war with Kumo and Nyguyen had the perfect idea to soothe things over with them. It would also provide him with a chunk of goodwill that could be used to push for his plans. The Hokage was holding a piece of paper that contained his notes on how to help fix the shinobi world in the aftermath of this devastating conflict. It took over 1,000 years of warfare for mankind to develop the Hidden Village System, but it would only take three years to start back. He had read the notes to the unconscious Ikomiki. He found the process helpful and when he was done, he turned to her and said with an abrupt sigh:
"I bet you never figured this did you?"
He looked at the paper and then at the doorway. He had sent for Arisu and Tengoku. He hoped they would arrive soon as there was much to discuss.
"I mean how could you? You aren't much different from my own student Ashitaka. Following orders until they get you hurt and killed.....and who is to blame? Yourselves, the military culture, your sensei? I wish Akihiro and I could take all of it...we certainly deserve to but if you ever reach my level of responsibility, the one thing you should know is that you really only need to mess up once. Just one time. Be a little slow....Just one time....be a little late....just one time....be a little weak......just one time. And how can a shinobi or kunoichi never not be late? Not be slow? Not be weak? You can't be perfect in this profession and that wouldn't be so bad if it were just your own neck on the line"
Nyguyen felt a drop of blood form in the corner of his eye. The cat-girl couldn't hear him and likely never would. At this point it didn't matter. All there was left to do was press on until peace was achieved.
