Unique Abilities:
Whispers: As a member of the Hozuki Intelligence Network, Kagetsu has access to information generally considered inaccessible, boosting the effect of her Intelligence with regards to other characters, villages, and politics by one rank. This includes only general information and recognition, as well as various deeds, of those individuals one rank lower than is indicated by Kagetsu’s Intelligence. An intelligence network involves the sharing of information, however, making information about Kagetsu more easily available, increasing her own rank by one for the purpose of other characters using Intelligence to discern details about her.
Wealth: With a working knowledge of trade, Kagetsu has learned a reliable form of investing via the Hozuki Trade Empire. She is able to select any amount of money in her possession at any given time and roll a die; an outcome of 6-10 means that the investment failed and all of the money is lost, but an outcome of 1-5 means a successful investment and 5% of that money is paid to her once per month, permanently.
Talent Unrivaled: As one of many Hozuki groomed for positions of power, Kagetsu has tremendous ability in both Ninjutsu and Kenjutsu. When using the former, her Coordination and Stamina increase by one tier each. When using the latter, her Coordination and Speed increase by one tier each. In either case, her Intelligence decreases by two tiers.
Focus: Kagetsu’s hands are well trained and capable of operating independently of each other, thus allowing her to not only use one handed-seals, but to use this function to perform the hand seals of two jutsu simultaneously. When using one-handed seals, her Coordination falls one tier, but when using two jutsu at once, it falls two tiers. Additionally, the cost of both techniques are increased by one Rank if they are of different elemental natures (this excludes non-elemental, Inton, and Yoton). This does not allow simultaneous activation of two separate techniques.
Makeshift Marksman: When wielding a ranged or thrown weapon, such as a bow or even using the Hozuki’s Water Gun Technique, Kagetsu’s Perception increases by one tier for the purpose of seeing and tracking, but her Perception in regards to foresight and precognitive saves decreases by one tier.
Art of Summoning: The amount of time Kagetsu’s summons can remain out is increased by one post. However, the amount of summons she can have out at one time is set at 1, also regardless of the summon’s rank. Her summons receive an extra + to one of their stats when summoned by her.
Appearance:
Kagetsu is average height for a girl and has generally delicate looking skin for a ninja. Her hair is nearly jet black and her eyes a vibrant shade of violet. Her teeth are commonly shaped like the typical person’s, though perhaps more perfect than most, but she is able to alter them into sharpened fangs more typical of a shark or a demon, thanks to her clan’s signature technique.
While not particular muscular, Kagetsu is deceptively strong for her small frame, which she keeps covered in a large variety of clothing. Most days, she prefers a loose-fitting, white long-sleeved shirt over equally loose black pants, while others, she may go for something tighter to better suit her combat-oriented lifestyle.
History:
There is rarely diversity in the upbringing of most Hozuki. It is a Clan of nobles whose leaders are elected democratically, rather than by lineage, and so most members will take an interest in political ventures later on in their lives and hardly any family within the Clan suffers from poverty. This leads to lifestyles similar to real world nobles, where those less fortunate are seen as lesser. Kagetsu was not of that opinion, though not because of humble beginnings.
While she was not the child of any current or past Clan Leader –though not for her father’s lack of trying- she was also not brought up in meager conditions. Her father was an accomplished trader and had spent the first portion of his life out at sea, earning a decent living so as to contribute plentifully to the Clan for the sake of increasing his standing, but also to reach a point that he could retire and still maintain a steady income while raising his children. Because of this, he was older than most when his first was born, but he had taken for himself a wife of considerably younger years. She was gorgeous, by all accounts, and while he certainly appreciated it, he had chosen her for her genetics. You see, Yatsuko was concerned first and foremost with his legacy, and sought to find a wife whose family held superior physical and mental characteristics that might be passed on to his children.
This dedication didn’t stop there. Yatsuko hired some of the best instructors to teach his eldest two daughters, ensuring their ability to survive in the harsh world that was quickly developing. Kirigakure was forming, and it was to be an environment for the powerful to succeed, so he saw to it that they would both be as prepared as possible to succeed on their own. To the firstborn, he also taught everything he knew about trade, while primarily teaching his second daughter to fight well. Kagetsu was this second daughter, and she had an interest in the trade aspect of her family, so she spent a great deal of time learning from her older sister and studying what she could when not training.
When the Kirigakure Ninja Academy finally opened, Kagetsu entered in as a student, while her older sister was of the age and the talent to immediately test out for graduation. So while Kagetsu spent the four years leading up thirteen in classes, Katsuki worked through a great many missions as one of the first classes of Genin in the village. By the team Kagetsu earned that title, her older sister was already Chuunin, and on such a different caliber that it seemed little Kagetsu would never catch up. So she devoted every bit of free time she could manage in training, thinking all the while of before the academy, when she and Katsuki would train and have fun together. Her overwhelming dedication often caused her to miss meals, and it became something of a stigma for her to randomly collapse in the middle of a session due to lack of nutrition.
Kagetsu continued to work hard and earned recognition in some circles of the village for her fierce determination and ability to get the mission done at all costs. It seemed that she and her sister were on a fast track to reach Jounin together, for while the former was still only a Genin, her skills and abilities were well beyond both her years and her rank. This is what was thought to happen when the two girls were called in for a promotion ceremony, but lingering feelings regarding the First Mizukage’s transgressions put the higher ups in the village in a peculiar spot, and so they would not afford an exception like a rank skip to a member of the recently stained Hozuki Clan. Instead, she was awarded Chuunin, while her sister became a Jounin.
The two girls saw very little of each other after that. Katsuki was assigned to a team of her own while Kagetsu either dawdled in menial village tasks or took on secretive missions in support of the Anbu Black Ops. She acquired a sort of taste for that group during this time, but she was never considered worthy of officially joining their ranks, despite her constant supportive role. This was insufficient to deter her, of course, and so she continued to pursue that dream, following the same kind of dedication and training that put her on par with her sister. Now, she was even better, and she was finally able to prove it.
After having been denied many times her request to become a Jounin sooner than usual, the higher-ups in Kirigakure finally decided to give her a shot. They pit her against her sister, Katsuki, with the promise that if she won, she would be promoted on the spot, but if she lost, her request would be denied and she would have to wait no less than three years before trying again. To everyone’s surprise, especially Katsuki, she won, and was immediately progressed to the rank of Jounin at just seventeen years of age.
Kagetsu didn’t stop there, though. She continued to work diligently to accomplish every mission put before her, earning more recognition that culminated in even more missions, essentially absolving her of taking on a team of her own, which she was pleased with, as it gave her more time to train when not on duty. It was during this time that Kagetsu took a greater interest in her clan’s business ventures. Though she was not in line to inherit her father’s fortunes, she had learned almost as much as Katsuki and began using what money she earned to make investments of her own, experimenting in every way she could think of to best take advantage of the Hozuki Trade Empire.
One secret she learned throughout those experiments is the value of knowledge; many people approached her with inside information of others’ goods and various different factors that allowed her to better take advantage of the competition. Rather than simply be thankful of this blessing and continue to make money, Kagetsu joined what she soon learned was a network of spies as vast as the empire of trading. Information about a great many things, including people she’d never even heard of, became as accessible to her as books at a public library, with the only condition that her involvement remain secret and that she do what she could to contribute.
A year has passed and Kagetsu has become comfortable in her position as both spy and trader, in addition to Jounin of the Hidden Mist Village. Still, she seeks to fulfill her current ambition of joining the Anbu, and hopes to one day gain the strength it takes to be recognized by even the Kage. After that, only time will tell. One thing is certain: Kagetsu isn’t the sort of person to run out of ambitions.
Personality:
The general characteristics of the Hozuki Clan are those of nobles, wealthy and powerful, that believe themselves better than most others. Kagetsu is somewhat divergent from this outlook, for while she possesses a mind for economics and trade, she believe a person’s worth is something independent of how much money or power one has. Worth is something relative to one’s chosen field; the wealth of a merchant, perhaps, or the strength of a shinobi, but because every person is a unique individual in some way, an overall determination of worth cannot be isolated to just one or two specific fields. Her Clan may disagree with her, but she can be a stubborn woman, and she sticks to what she believes in.
This stubbornness has caused Kagetsu trouble from time to time; when she believes in something, she does so with all of her heart, and she will doggedly support these beliefs beyond the point that she should relent. For this reason, she can be ignorant to the opinions and beliefs of others and will often find herself apologizing for taking things too far. She may be a stubborn one, but she has the self-awareness to know when she is wrong, and is more than willing to admit her own mistakes. That’s how people grow, she knows, and she always does her best to improve.
In the spirit of continuous growth, Kagetsu dedicates much of her time and perseverance in the pursuit of her chosen fields. She is less talented in a wide array of subjects, but she is highly skilled in what few things she does know. This goes beyond just the typical practices of a shinobi, for where she is skilled in Ninjutsu and Kenjutsu, she is even more talented in the trade and intelligence aspects of her Clan. Kagetsu takes an active role in the Hozuki Trade Empire and is a recognized member of the secretive spy networks of the clan, not only for the sake of furthering herself, but also to lend aid to her family.
This desire to help others can sometimes extend beyond just the members of her family, for Kagetsu is one to treasure close friends, though she does not easily make them. Her stubbornness and dedication is off-putting to most, so few people are able to connect with her, but she develops a special kind of bond with those few friends unseen in most people, where simple friendships eventually reach a point beyond even a blood bond.
This bond is in stark contrast to her coldness to those she is unfamiliar with, for while Kagetsu is a generally cheerful person when with her friends, she can seem cold and unwelcoming to strangers. She is not blind to the nature of this world and has an unnaturally easy time ending the lives of others, and this side of her seems more like that of a demon, worthy of Kirigakure’s as of yet little-known moniker: The Bloody Mist.

- The stories to be told about the secretive and yet highly acclaimed Special Assassination and Tactical Squad are ones filled less with the expected wondrous adventures and more with the tribulations one must face when taking many lives of those considered to be equals, those that would be great allies if but fate had laid out a different path for them to take. The people elected for this task force had to be strong, or at the very least willing to change, for change they did, in the midst of the daunting tasks brought upon them. Though none knew of the specifics or even so much as the name of this Konohagakure Organization, everyone could see clearly the effects it had on its members. Most found themselves unable to readjust to normal life, and so devoted everything they had, while others could find neither the strength to move on nor the will to go back. Some people died by the hands of the enemy, others at the end of their own blade. Popular opinion labeled this society one of horror and pain, a tragedy for all involved, even after its dismantling. A select few, however, found this life to be more enjoyable than any other, having adjusted much better than could have been expected and finding an unnatural solace in the sort of work provided. It was these very people that formed the strongest of units within the force, that changed the game completely, and gave this organization the recognition and power that made it great.
One such person was a much younger Shikyo Uchiha, a shinobi officially recognized as a Chuunin and yet operating at the level of an Anbu operative. He was but one of a somewhat large strike team, a five-man cell consisting of the Hidden Leaf Village’s most powerful clans: the Sarutobi, the Uzumaki, the Hyuga, the Senju, and the Uchiha. Each were considered masters of their inheritance, despite their deceptively youthful ages and lower rankings. Kazuo, the Sarutobi and leader of this team, was the one exception: a Jonin with extensive battle experience revolving around espionage and assassination who had long since mastered a great many combat modalities. He was the only one with enough ability and versatility to lead such a strike force on the kinds of missions they were designed to handle. Konohagakure had been on the verge of war with several other nations for quite some time now, recognized only in suspicions and likely caused by the increase in power of the very clans that were represented in this squad. Nobody could be for sure, and nobody could hope to diplomatically ease the tension of a situation which had no definitive proof to even exist. The growing fear was that a preemptive assault would catch the village off guard, as was the only conceivable way for any of the lesser nations to successfully bring down the giant that is Konoha. For this very purpose was the Elite Strike Team conceived, to handle these threats in secrecy, without the knowledge of other nations and the public of the Hidden Leaf alike.
One in a long line of missions in support of that cause had brought the likes of Shikyo Uchiha, Seijo Hyuga, Yuuki Senju, Kari Uzumaki, and the lead, Kazuo Sarutobi upon the threshold of Iwagakure’s immense wall. It was a marvel to behold, but was hardly more than an obstacle to the squad standing before it. They were tasked with infiltrating the Hidden Rock Village to secure a certain set of documents possessed by the village elders somewhere within their kage complex. It was unknown just what sort of information was contained within these papers, or why the Hidden Leaf was so interested in them, but none of that mattered right now. The first priority was the retrieval of those documents; the second being the secrecy of the mission followed closely by the survival of the group. Though strong and rightfully recognized as such on their own, even together they could not bring down the combined military might of an entire village, especially one of the five major ones.
“You’re all familiar with the Chakra Absorption Technique, correct?” Kazuo began, drawing from his right hip pouch a small glowing blue stone. The others nodded in unison, Shikyo included, though he had not actually bothered to master that technique quite yet. His father kept him plenty occupied with weapons training as it was, adding more onto that would surely drive him insane. Nevertheless, he had a fully operational Sharingan and was easily capable of copying techniques after a single glance.
“What is that?” Kari spoke up, eyeing the mystical artifact.
“It’s a Chakra Containment Sphere. I’ve been collecting chakra over the years, so now it’s a practically limitless source.” Kazuo explained. “Now, each of you take enough chakra to refill your reserves.” It had been a long trip to reach this place, and none of them had slept at all since leaving the Hidden Leaf Village. It was too risky to remain in one place for any length of time; just exposure of their existence could lead to catastrophic consequences.
Seijo took hold of the small glowing rock first, his chakra reaching inside to latch onto and draw out as much power as his body could take. Shikyo watched with determination, scrutinizing every nuance of the technique so that he might perfect it on just the first try. Yuuki told hold next, followed by Kari and finally Shikyo. Though he did not know it, the order was, in fact, intentional, for all of them knew how little time he had to afford the various techniques they had all been assigned to train, so all of them tried their best to accommodate him as much as possible, without letting him know, if possible.
When they had all been completely rejuvenated, Kazuo took for himself some of the stone’s power and then returned it to his pouch for later use; it was almost a given that they would need its energy again before the mission was ended. This was looking to be a long one. “Alright then.” The team captain spoke, stretching his neck. “See you all on the other side.” The Sarutobi said before sinking into the ground, to move under the wall in the easiest way imaginable. With a smirk, Seijo and Yuuki followed suit, knowing their companions had no such affinity for Earth Release. Kari and Shikyo looked at each other, then moved on in separate directions. It was the way of this strike force for each member to provide for themselves whenever possible, so as to prevent the weakness of reliance, and give them more motivation to continuously grow stronger.
Kari, a master of Fuuinjutsu, had devised a fairly unique method of using seals as a mage might use glyphs, accomplishing a wide variety of effects through methods unknown without actually needing to seal anything away. One seal on her body rendered her presence masked, negating all traces of her chakra signature while outlining her body in darkness, using a constant sealing effect to prevent any sort of reflection. With that done, she looked to the wall. It was covered in shadow, the sun still rising on the other side of the village. It was the perfect location for her to scale the wall without being seen. Using basic chakra manipulation, she began climbing upwards, placing a seal with one touch every other step to propel herself directly upward, allowing her to clear the massive thing in just under a minute.
Kari stopped just shy of the top, knowing full well that this was a guarded area. Patrols moved about the entirety of the wall in a constantly revolving pattern, one mixed with just enough variables to prevent most minds from predicting its behavior. Kari was a particularly brilliant young woman, and a specialty class sensor as well; she had the pattern down in maybe thirty seconds. She waited a few more moments for a guard above her to move past, and immediately jumped up behind him, moving seamlessly and without a sound. She had chosen the precise moment where there was the smallest shred of an opening in the defense, when two guards were heading in opposite directions and the other two –who were supposed to cover openings like that- were turning to switch positions. It lasted for only a second or two, but she made it across all the same. Now she just had to find a way down on this side, where the sun’s rays were illuminating everything with a particularly keen brilliance.
Shikyo had no such masking ability, being a sole master of weapons, his Dojutsu, and the physical body. Rather than scale the wall where he knew that he’d be caught, the Chuunin elected to infiltrate via the front door instead. He peered beyond the curvature of the wall, still far enough away to hide behind it. There were two guards posted on the outside, checking incoming traffic, which was light to none at this time of the day. He figured there was another four inside the actual gate, waiting and watching for something to go wrong. It would be in his best interest to not make a scene, but he could not get in the normal way. Though his village and this one were technically in a time of peace, he did not possess the necessary papers to enter, and could not use them even if he did, for that would reveal the extremely secretive team he was with, and possibly even ruin the mission. No, he had to use more covert tactics.
The day was already looking to be a long one. A late night trip with the guys to a local bar occupied most of the time that Aori would have been sleeping, but he still had an obligation to be here. Being an entrance guard wasn’t so bad a deal. Sure, you have to wake up at the crack of dawn and stand in one little area for twelve or more hours, but it was generally pretty lax. Nobody ever tried to attack the village these days, so the hardest part really was just checking all the different people in. It was his turn to relieve the current shift of that, swapping out his position at the rear watch. That was a position that everybody wanted, but was originally assigned to only one or two people per entrance. There was no code against the swapping of duties in these positions, though, so long as somebody had it covered, and so a few drinks and chats later, and they had all arranged for a constant swap to keep things less dull and let everyone get a shot at the easiest shinobi job in all of Iwagakure.
Aori assumed the lead checking position without missing a beat, stepping right up in front of the previous shift and taking the next man’s ID as normal. The paper read Koishi no Sato, a smaller village on the outskirts of the Land of Earth, one of Iwagakure’s principle supporters in mineral trade and under its direct protection. The name never held any interest, so Aori usually skipped over that part, unless it read a trigger word, such as Uchiha, Senju, Hyuga, Kaguya, Hozuki, Satetsu, Kurome, Douchiwa, or any other widely known clans from other villages. People like that had to be placed under covert surveillance during their time in the village, but this guy didn’t have anything particularly interesting about him. Looked to be a merchant, with a large bag filled with random trinkets. Aori let him pass, signaling the guards behind him that he wasn’t a threat. The man made a suspicious looking smile and walked right on by. The next person was a woman, hardly anything special about her either. She passed through, as did two others, before Aori found himself looking on the same face as that Koishi merchant from before. His eyes widened as he turned around, directing a finger at that large trinket bag. “Hey! Stop that man!” The two rear guards tackled the merchant, while the other one slipped by, stopped by no one. It could be said that this was a miracle, only a miracle of the eyes. He had already caught the first two guards in his trance, leading them to believe he was a returning Iwa-nin for whom they had no questions. While the rear detachment were busy roughing up the innocent merchant, the real threat moved on into the village, to meet up with his team.
“About time.” Greeted Seijo, who sat upon a rooftop over the others, apparently having been waiting there for several minutes. “Seriously, we need to get you some infiltration techniques.” Kari chimed in. Yuuki and Kazuo remained quiet until the Uchiha was within immediate proximity.
“Alright.” Kazuo began. “Our target is in the Kage complex in the central district of the village. This place is massive, even compared to Konoha, and it’s filled with enough shinobi to wage the next Great Shinobi War. We’re going to need to disguise ourselves if we ever plan to make it there unnoticed. You already know your direction. Remember, leave no trace.” He looked each of his subordinates in the eye before moving into the building just behind them, leaving the rest to their task. They had all been assigned a cardinal direction prior to departing from the village, which would function as their infiltration route within the village. Shikyo was the east, Seijo was west, Kari north, and Yuuki south. This meant that Seijo was already in position to begin, while Shikyo had the longest trek to make. He’d likely be late in arriving, but it mattered little; he was the weakest member of the squad, after all. That’s not to say he was actually weak by any other standard, however, for his skills were beyond that of most Jonin, even back then.
With the instructions issued, each member moved out, activating one of their signature techniques, the transparent escape technique. Seijo made his way into the streets, seeking a high level shinobi to target, as always, while the rest moved in the shadows as best they could to avoid detection while they got into position. Shikyo had been slacking in that technique as well, using his Sharingan again to make sure he was doing it right by watching the others activate it. It was really hard for him, juggling weapons training with his father and Sharingan mastery on the side, but still having the endless training assignments from the strike team bog down his psyche. There was entirely too much to be done and a severe shortage of time with which to do it. Nevertheless, though the camouflage faltered initially, he was able to correct the mistake and continue on unseen. Unlike the notoriously prideful Seijo, Shikyo preferred a lesser value target in these types of missions, typically a civilian with no important duties or family. This made things a bit harder for him to start with, but it ensured that nobody would discover his presence until the mission had long since been finished, and he was safely within the walls of his village. Seijo, on the other hand, seemed to have a knack for picking Jonin assigned to teach Genin squads, who noticed the absence of their sensei fairly quick and thus made things more difficult than need be. The team always pulled through though, somehow.
Almost an hour had passed by before Shikyo had found himself a worthy target. It was an older male, likely late thirties/early forties, who was sitting alone in an apartment on the second floor. The room was just that, a single room with a single closet and a bathroom, along with some kitchen space separated from the bedroom that doubled as a living area. All indications within suggested this person was a lifelong employee, working at some iron factory for at least fifteen years, according to the plaque hanging on the wall. The interior was also decidedly male oriented, with no female indications to be seen, implying that he was both single and childless, precisely Shikyo’s optimal choice. The Uchiha opened the window without worry, alerting the man to his presence but causing no stir. Though aware, this hard working man could not move, chakra binding him like steel ropes whilst the presumed burglar stepped in from behind. There wasn’t even any slack for speech, as the Chuunin rarely cared to give his prey the chance to yell, but it also made it more difficult for him to de-humanize begging targets, something he still had to do in order to do what he does.
With the Temporary Paralysis technique holding the helpless man rigid, Shikyo placed a hand over his head, still standing behind the man to avoid any risk of exposing his identity, despite knowing what was soon to happen to this person. The Uchiha closed his eyes and began to let his chakra seep into his target’s skull, infecting the brain and projecting a form of his consciousness within that of the captive. In just a few short moments, Shikyo had the information he needed, enough to extrapolate a plausible identity and personality while impersonating this Daiki Ishisuke. With everything in hand, or rather, in mind, Shiikyo drew out one of his kunai. Holding it fast in his hand, the Uchiha flowed his chakra over the blade, increasing both sharpness and durability before quickly and quietly slitting the man’s throat. Blood seeped into the wooden flooring, but the task was not yet finished. The Chuunin moved forward towards the body that was still held erect by the binding of chakra, placing his focus upon the man’s face. This was perhaps one of the more gruesome, if not useful, techniques that are considered basic to this strike team, the Vanishing Facial Copy. With one hand and a dedicated control of chakra, Shikyo literally peeled the man’s face off, copying the features with incredible precision before placing it over his own, making a few minor adjustments to ensure that the disguise was flawless. He stepped before a mirror to make sure that nothing was out of place before speaking a few lines of dialogue to get the voice right –he’d acquired enough memories to map out the speech patterns and sounds without needing to actually hear the man speak. Unlike some of the other strike team techniques, he had a fairly solid grasp on this one.
Only one more step was left before he could begin the journey towards the target building. The disguised Chuunin knelt over the man, touching a hand to his body. First, he used the transformation technique to duplicate the overall appearance and clothing of the dead man, and second, he applied a steady stream of chakra into the corpse, which flooded it swiftly and illuminated it in a brilliant yet also dull blue color. That light soon turned to fire, and consumed the body in its entirety, leaving only the blood on the floor as any evidence of what had transpired there. The Body Elimination was a success.
With the deed done, Shikyo stepped out through the front door, securing it behind him so that none would notice the bloodied room for at least a few days. As he walked down the hall and towards the stairs of this two story apartment complex, the Uchiha made a few final adjustments to his form as befitting the team’s typical infiltration strategy. For though he bore the face and voice of a citizen of the Hidden Rock Village, and his transformation technique copied that man’s outfit perfectly, he still might arouse suspicion by not acting according to the part as he normally would had he been given a few hours to scour Daiki’s memories. There were subtle mannerisms and habits that people develop over decades that he couldn’t possibly account for in the short amount of time given, but he had to make do. The entire goal for this disguise was to get him to the kage complex; the rest could be dealt with by other methods. That would fall apart, of course, if someone suspicious of him attempted the same sort of thing he had just done, a mind reading. So he focused inward as he descended the stairs, concentrating chakra within his own mind to catch himself in a sort of Genjutsu, a protective illusion that made it extremely difficult for others to read his mind. Once in place, it secured his mind from intrusions, so long as they weren’t the lengthy sort one might experience in an Anbu Interrogation Center, but he doubted very highly that it would ever come to that.
Not two blocks down the street and Shikyo was already encountering problems. Groups of shinobi were scattering all over the village and questioning random people about a possible intruder. There was no evidence of this, but the incident at the Gates was enough to arouse suspicion; this was the customary, textbook response to that sort of thing. Shikyo did his best to move in such a way as to avoid coming into contact with any of them, but someone took notice of him nonetheless, and so two Iwagakure Chuunin made their way towards him. “Excuse me, sir, have you noticed anything out of the ordinary? A strange person or persons that you don’t recognize? Break-ins, assaults, anything of the sort?” They unwittingly questioned the very person they sought. “Afraid not, friend.” Shikyo responded, tacking on the last word as was customary for Daiki when addressing a stranger. They nodded to each other and were just about to leave when “Daiki” pointed towards the top of a building and exclaimed: “Hey! Who’s that?!” The two Chuunin, along with every other shinobi in the area looked up at what they saw to be a cloaked figure standing on a rooftop overlooking the entire area. They all moved in unison towards the person, leaving Shikyo himself space to move quickly down the streets, walking with a brisk pace but avoiding running. By the time they discovered that it was just a projection on that roof, he would already be gone.
The rest of the trip to the Kage Complex was fairly uneventful, just a few ignorant people that can’t see where they’re going or parking their carts in the middle of the street, like idiots. It had no bearing on the mission at hand, save for wasting time that Shikyo already knew he could not afford to waste. He was already late, enough that, as expected, everyone had already made it there and was waiting on his arrival. They were all fairly inconspicuous: Seijo and Kazuo were acting as shinobi guards posted at the building’s entrance, while Yuuki was shopping for flowers and Kari was sitting on a bench, reading a book. He would never have known it was them save for Kari’s signal. Her sensory skills afforded her intimate knowledge of the team’s chakra signatures, so she was able to know exactly where each of them were and could let them know when all had gathered. The Uzumaki closed her book and stood up, moving towards the building while stretching her arms. That was the signal. Kazuo and Seijo let her pass by, while Yuuki and Shikyo each slowly and inconspicuously made their way around the building. Kazuo and Seijo were already inside, having their shadow clones act as the guards while they lay in wait for the rest of the team. Kari met up with them first, as planned, so that they could relay the building’s layout to her after working the last hour or so mapping it out. She identified the best point of entry for the other two, and immediately went towards the back, walking through the large central hallway with no distinct sense of purpose, appearing more as a tourist exploring the wonders of the lower, public area of the building than a ninja on a mission.
Shikyo and Yuuki had both made it around back, seeing no other ideal entry points than a window near the rear. All that was left then was to wait for whoever was going to let them in, while also remaining inconspicuous, which wasn’t as easy as before. In this area, there was nothing around save a dirt area for what they guessed was for sparring or maybe events. It was all pretty bland, and very exposed. Without offering the enemy a chance to take notice of them, the two moved to blend in with the scenery. Yuuki melded with one of the smaller plants that had outlined most of the building, while Shikyo faded literally into the shadow cast by the complex itself, using one of his favorite techniques, the hiding in shadow. Several minutes had passed before the window subtly unlatched. It was what Yuuki and Shikyo had been waiting for, so once the coast was clear, they both emerged from hiding and, one after the other, climbed in to meet up with Kari. Once inside, they closed and latched the window before listening to the next batch of instruction. “Seijo already scanned the building. It doesn’t look like the document is in here, but there’s some kind of barrier underneath the bottom floor that’s blocking his vision.”
“So there’s a level below this one.” Yuuki surmised.
“Precisely. Kazuo-sensei and Seijo are finding a way in now, and we’ve got an assignment in the meantime.” The Uzumaki finished, piquing the Uchiha’s and the Senju’s interest. “There’s a high value target inside this building. Sensei wants us to take him out as quietly as possible.”
“Okay, where’s the target now?” Shikyo asked, eager to please his captain.
“He’s on the second floor, above that room there.” Kari pointed back down the hall, two doors down and on the left. “The bottom room is empty, but the top one has two others. The way they’re positioned, it’s probably a meeting.”
“Projected combat level?” Yuuki, ever the intelligent one, inquired.
“Upper Chuunin, possible Jonin. Oh, and uh…he wants you to take point on this one.” Kari looked to Shikyo.
He hadn’t taken point on a mission quite yet, but he had always wanted to. Now that he was, the nervousness and anxiety struck, making him wonder if maybe this was really a good thing. Shikyo put himself behind him for now, and simply moved past the two girls to quietly open the door. The hallways was entirely empty, with all doors shut and the end of it turning into another hallway. This really was the perfect infiltration route. The latch clicked once as it was opened, and once more. Shikyo’s black eyes suddenly turned bright red, and he jumped forward, into the room, pulling out a katana and coating it in a condensed layer of fire chakra to sever the falling axe. It was an odd trap to be sure, but it was no match for his Sharingan and weapon skill. After sheathing his weapon, he clasped his hands together, unwilling to take any more chances such as that. A barrier visible only to Kari’s sensory perception expanded around him, granting awareness of the environment. This would provide prior warning to any more surprises.
With that done, Yuuki moved in behind the Uchiha and held her hand up to the ceiling, looking to Shikyo for a signal. He nodded, and she pulled her hand down, causing the a large hole to form from crumbling rock –luckily, Iwagakure made famously exclusive use of earthen materials to create their structures. Shikyo jumped up, noting immediately the nature of the room that he was entering. It was made of steel, Koton by the looks of it, and had three people inside. The target was sitting behind a desk, facing the Uchiha, while the others were in chairs before the desk, facing away. With steel padding on the walls to muffle sound and prevent destruction, this was almost too easy, he noted as the hole in the floor suddenly sealed itself up.
Before anything else, he spread his chakra to the target’s mind, locking down all functions in an instant as the Genjutsu binding took effect. This prevented him from warning the other two, who were as of yet unaware thanks to Yuuki’s silent technique and Shikyo’s stealthy nature. It wouldn’t be long before they noticed that he was no longer moving, though, so he had to dispatch them with haste. Half a second later, the Uchiha had made six hand seals and was in the process of releasing a torrent of flame from his mouth that split upon exposure to the air into many individual balls of flame. They devastated the room, lighting everything but the walls, floor, and ceiling on fire, to include the people sitting in the chairs. Before they even had a chance to scream, though, Shikyo had already released another stream of flame that traveled along the ground, up the chairs and into the two men’s mouths as he held the tiger seal. It melted tongues and vocal cords alike, letting out only the gruelingly unpleasant sound of simmering body fluid where screams were intended. They writhed about in pain for a while before the man behind the desk finally broke the Genjutsu, casting a similar one upon the Uchiha. He wasn’t sure what it would do, but he didn’t care to find out either, identifying it with his Sharingan and meeting it with a surge of chakra to rid his body of it even as they came into contact with each other.
No yelling emitted from the target, implying he felt confident in his ability to fend off this intruder, and he also didn’t seem particularly displeased with the dying businessmen burning in his chairs. He did, however, look a bit peeved, perhaps because his office was now ablaze, but it didn’t really matter. Shikyo was enjoying himself far too much to care about such things, mostly because he hardly ever got to use his Fire Release Ninjutsu on missions. They were typically too loud and destructive for covert operations. Now, though, he was free to go all out. He launched another variation of a flame bullet technique at the man, secretly hoping it would be dealt with so that this could become an interesting exchange. His target swatted the exploding flame shot away with a Katon coated hand, letting it burst harmlessly against the steel wall before casting a stream of heat from his blazing hand. Shikyo brought up another technique, a spiraling makeshift barrier of fire that supplanted the opposing technique before launching forward. The desk was overturned and impacted with the flame whirlwind before every piece of fire in the entire room was suddenly sucked up into a vacuum that was soon to be revealed as the target’s actual mouth. Did he just eat fire?! Shikyo looked on, stunned, as his foe unleashed all that he had consumed back out in the form of an immense fireball almost the size of the entire room. The Uchiha reacted on instinct, creating seven hand seals as his chest expanded tremendously and he exhaled a godly force of flame. It impacted with the other, pushing forth constantly from Shikyo’s mouth as it eventually overtook the enemy fireball, leaving Shikyo breathless enough to be incapable of sustaining the technique any longer. It was irrelevant, however, as he had already launched the next assault, four hand seals hidden behind cascading flames signaling the approach of a massive amount of explosive tags along the floor that, by the time they were noticed, had already made contact with the enemy’s foot. He tried to dodge, but they exploded early, blowing him to bits while also providing enough force to knock a massive hole in the floor. Had it not been for Yuuki’s constant reinforcing of the entire room’s perimeter, that move alone, saying nothing of those preceding it, would surely have alerted the entire building to their presence. The last thing they needed was a confrontation with the Tsuchikage.
Shikyo tapped his foot on the floor three times with one second intervals between them. Yuuki recognized the code immediately and dropped the reinforcement technique, opening up a hole in the floor as she did. The Uchiha dropped down and immediately noticed the dreadful gaze of his Senju counterpart; she was definitely not appreciative of all of his antics in that room, antics that she had to cover for. He looked away in shame as he formed the hand seals for another fire release technique. He always sought to impress his teammates in any way possible, but the subterfuge for which he was known was often supplanted by an innate instinct to watch things burned. Yuuki called it his Uchiha Tendency. With a release of air, Shikyo unloaded a mass of flammable gas into the room above him. Already having planned for the tactic, the Senju covered the hole with earth release just before the gaseous substance made contact with the flames on the far side of the room. One more reinforcement and the room was silently reduced to ash, well, everything inside of it, that is. “I hope you’ve got all of that out of your system now. I won’t have you blowing up this mission.” Yuuki scolded him in a whispering –albeit terrifying- voice. Shikyo looked down at the floor, saying nothing while Kari giggled at the two characters.
“The hell have you guys been doing?” Seijo’s voice echoed in the room, calling all of their attention back on the mission. “We found the entrance, let’s go.” He said, irritated and not the least bit in the mood to hear whatever silly excuse they were about to come up with. The disguised group followed the pseudo Iwa-nin down the hallway and into an unmarked, empty room. Kazuo was standing in there, over a section of the floor that looked no different than any other part. The Jonin looked Shikyo in the eye, as if to say “Is it done?” The Uchiha nodded in response to the unspoken question. Now they could get down to business. With a hefty tug, the Sarutobi pried open the floor by literally reaching into it with Doton, revealing a hidden ladder leading down into some unknown darkness. Seijo descended first, followed by Yuuki, then Kari, Shikyo, and finally Kazuo, all still bearing their disguises in the case that they encounted somebody down there, and for when they needed to escape. At the bottom was an empty room illuminated in torch light that looked to be a natural cavern with a wooden door on one side of it. “Alright, this seems to be the base of that Iwagakure intelligence organization we’ve been hearing about lately. We won’t know for sure until we explore deeper, but if the document isn’t up there, then it’s definitely down here.” Everyone save Seijo thought to question this secret organization that they had never heard about, but such was not their place. The Hyuga was already aware of it, of course.
Kazuo opened the door, motioning for the team to move through. Seijo took point with his Byakugan, while Yuuki and Shikyo stood side by side, followed by Kari and Kazuo. It was their base formation, arranging each member in a way to best utilize their abilities in any situation. The cavern beyond that door was narrow and tall, barely allow the two’s to walk shoulder to shoulder, but having no visible ceiling. It made sense, given how long that ladder was. Torches lined the upper sections of the walls enough to illuminate the lower levels without obstructing the path in any way, while the walls themselves seemed damp with some liquid, likely condensation. Seijo and Kari said nothing of it, so it likely wasn’t dangerous.
The small strike force finally made its way into a larger opening, into what looked similar to the central hub for some sort of mine shaft system, but what rested in piles within those carts looked like no other stone or metal Shikyo had ever seen before. “Adamntite.” Seijo whispered. It was one of the hardest and rarest materials on the planet. The fact that so many of it was in this one place was truly astounding. “This could prove troublesome for the leaf. We should destroy it.” The Hyuga suggested, but Kazuo shot him down. “Stay on mission; we’re here for the document, and nothing else. Have you located it yet?” “Yes, but…there’s a problem.” He looked back at Kari, who spoke in turn. “Something is dampening my sensing. I can’t feel any chakra.” “And I can’t see anyone.” Seijo finished. That meant this mission was going to have to be done the old fashioned way, one which Kazuo was well adjusted to.
“Alright. Seijo, Kari, you’re with me. Shikyo, Yuuki, cause a disturbance, and take this.” He ordered, handing Yuuki the chakra containment sphere. The first three were lifted up on earthen platforms that combined together on the wall and propelled them along the side of it across the massive corridor. The room below that they were passing over was plenty large enough for what Shikyo and Yuuki were known for, and it also allowed them to control the exit point, should they not be overwhelmed. The two absorbed their fill of chakra from the rock before Yuuki put it away, knowing they would likely need it by the end of all this. With no way of sensing what the others were doing or whether they had been detected, the distraction would be a bit of a gambit. It would definitely draw everyone in this underground compound into their room, but they had no way of knowing if it would send any of the enemy forces on a path to intersect with their friends.
“So? How do you want to do this?” Shikyo questioned his female companion.
“I was thinking a more subtle approach. We don’t want them seeing us if we can help it, and we’re both good at range. You lure them in, I crush their bones?” She said with an oddly excited smile.
“Heh, sounds good.” Shikyo replied, a little off-put by the level of comfort she had with employing earth release to reduce human forms to red pancakes. He ignored that feeling and began weaving hand seals. The best way to lure prey into a trap was with noise, or food, but with ninja, noise was definitely the better way, and what better way than by the sound of annihilating all that they were working so hard for? A notably large gathering of chakra welled up in his chest shortly before he expelled a ridiculous number of fireballs from his perch high above the ground floor, hell raining down upon and devastating everything that was neither stone nor steel. Carts shattered into millions of pieces from the sheer impact, everything else left quickly turning to ash. It was loud, very loud, the sounds of lost labor echoing throughout every corner of the cavern system. Soon, the cackling of the flames was drowned out by the rushing of feet, a veritable stampede of workers and shinobi alike rushing to check the noise. Not ten people in did Shikyo wait to unleash another wave of heat, a triple fire bomb attack known as the Fire Dragon Flame Bullet that decimated most of the people inside, while also warning those yet to emerge to refrain from doing so.
“Idoit!” Yuuki called out. “Now we can’t get them by surprise!” She berated him, forming hand seals of her own. Suddenly, one of the caves that they had been running out from collapsed in on itself, killing dozens and trapping many more. The amount of killing that was happening in this mission was started to affect Shikyo, and Yuuki could see it, but she knew more than anything else that he would have to get over that weakness if he was going to continue to be a part of this team, and for whatever reason, she didn’t want him to leave. “Hey,” she started, “go down there, I’ll lure them out. Let’s see if we can finish them before the others get back.” It wasn’t going to soothe him very much, but at least it could mean an early end to this battle.
The boy nodded his consent and jumped down onto the ground level. He could see a few of the people peeking around the corner of the two remaining caves, but they didn’t look to be preparing any sort of attack. Were they even shinobi? Had they just been killing innocent workers? He didn’t ever want to be a part of something like that, but this was for the good of the village. He had to do this, for his sake and those he cared about. War was the consequence of failing, in his mind, a war that would bring about the deaths of thousands. What are these numbers before him compared to that? Nearing one of the cave’s entrances, he began to formulate another Katon Ninjutsu, waiting for Yuuki to disrupt the ground within it, causing all of the people within to come sliding out, right into the midst of a spiraling blaze that incinerated them. All they could do was scream; none of them even knew any Ninjutsu. Shaking off his doubts once more, Shikyo ended the Blast Wave Wild Dance upon seeing nothing but ashes where people once stood. He moved on to the next one. There was only one person in this cave, as far as he could tell. Had the rest run away? As he closed in, a single man ran out, waving his arms and begging the Uchiha to wait for a moment. “Please! Please! Spare me! I have a wife! Two children! I’ll do anything you want, just…” With every word the man came closer, spurring the foolishly merciful Uchiha to activate a barrier technique, holding the person in place and cutting the words short. With the string light barrier in place, this guy wasn’t going anywhere, and it looked like he realized that, changing tactics from a convincing beggar to that of an arrogant warrior. “Heh, not bad, but we’ve already captured your friends.”
Shikyo’s eyes widened. He knew it had to be a bluff, given how powerful Kazuo and Seijo were, but he couldn’t risk it. With rage welling up inside of him, he placed a hand on the man’s head, attempting to read his mind. “Uh uh uh, that won’t work. ‘fraid I lost all those memories. Too bad.” Determined, Shikyo’s reddening eyes narrowed, activating another technique that he had practiced, but again, not yet mastered. He formed a few hand seals and targeted the man’s mind once more, attempting the Time Reversal technique. They both stood there in silence for a while; it…didn’t seem to be working. “No no, you’re doing it all wrong.” Yuuki said, walking up from behind him. “Watch me with your Sharingan, copy it, and get it right. Geez, Shikyo.” She applied the same hand seals, though her chakra manipulation was far from what he had been trying. Nevertheless, he copied it successfully, seeing no further need to attempt thanks to the prowess of his Dojutsu.
“We captured two Iwagakure shinobi in the south-eastern corridor. They were attempting to break into a secure room full of valuable information that we cannot afford to lose. The two are being held in the subterranean prison pending questioning under suspicion of either treason or impersonation. In either case, they will die.” It was a large quantity of information, but it told them that there was actual truth behind those words. What were those two doing to be captured so easily, and where was Kari?
