Riku had risen early again, as was usual for her expeditions. She pulled on a pair of leather gloves before leaving the house. She wore a dark, pinstriped shirt and black pants for this trip. A bag with the supplies for today's venture was slung over her shoulder. Quietly, she slunk to the training grounds. It didn't take long to find the plant she was after: poison ivy.
Carefully, Riku cut the vines and wound them like string before stuffing each bundle into a jar. Once the jar was saturated with the irritating plant, the blue-haired ninja pulled out another one and repeated the process. She returned home with three jars stuffed with poison ivy.
In her room, Riku had a small chest where she kept several large jars with labels on the lid of each one. She pulled out the one labeled poison ivy and took it over to a corner of the bedroom she used for her experiments. Carefully, Riku strained the plant material out of the liquid it was soaking in. She stuffed the fresh poison ivy into the jar before re-adding the liquid, 120 proof vodka. Using a cheesecloth, she squeezed the old leaves and vines over the jar to get out the last bits. She sealed up the jar once more and put it back in the trunk before shutting it.
Quietly, without waking Tsughi, her younger sister, Riku cleaned up and went to start making breakfast for the family. In a week or two, she would be able to freeze the vodka and poison ivy mixture to separate the plant's oils from the alcohol to extract it for her itching powder. Donning her gloves once more, Riku carefully retrieved the frozen oils from the mixture and stored it in a small bowl that was only used for making this particular compound. The young chemist then found some cornstarch and stirred it together before spreading it all out on a pan protected by a few sheets of parchment paper. The pan was set over the embers from cooking breakfast to dry out. Once the powder was dried, Riku could collect it in a few vials to keep for later use.
