If there was one thing she was good at, Nariko's natural perceptive abilities were top notch. She heard as a person, who she correctly assumed was Natsuru, started to move on the other side of the door, towards her. It didn't sound cautious or like there was any sort of anger or hostility behind her steps, so Nariko was fully relaxed herself when Natsuru opened the door.
The bluenette seemed to be in a bit of a chipper mood, which was nice to see. Nariko had a bit of a soft spot for her students in particular, and wanted them to ultimately be happy. That had actually been a driving factor for her to legalize Shimiko's sect of Jashinism in the first place. She wished that she could have done something that Ryuko wanted, other than making her her assistant as she had asked, because that didn't seem like something that really compared in scope to what she'd have liked to do.
Entering the penthouse, Nariko looked around, giving a slight whistle of appreciation. Sometimes she forgot just how rich Natsuru really was. She lived quite the life, which was certainly nice enough for anyone. She was probably one of the richest people in the world, and that was due in no small part to the company she owned. As Natsuru asked her to take a seat anywhere, Nariko obliged her, taking a seat on the couch and looking around at what Natsuru was doing. She liked the interior design of the penthouse well enough, and had to admit she was a little jealous.
"I'm good, thanks." Nariko said, declining the offer for food or drink. She wasn't really one to accept those offers in the first place, but she was currently not particularly hungry or thirsty, and didn't want to tempt herself with alcohol at the moment. As time passed, Nariko began to understand that Natsuru was mainly trying to be a good host for appearances sake, but that there was something more to it than just a friendly visit.
The issue came up shortly after she realized that. "Ahh.... I see." Nariko smiled apologetically. It should have been rather obvious to her, now that she thought of it. Natsuru hadn't timed her vacation when she did for no reason, she was dodging the village on purpose. "I'm sorry that I wasn't able to discuss the plans with you before this, I really am." Standing up from the couch, Nariko bowed her head, reverting to a more formal and sincere apology style, hands clasped in front of her in a traditional manner of respect and apology.
"There were a few factors at play that had to be considered, unfortunately. Things didn't quite go as planned, and that's going to happen sometimes, I'm not always right on my calls, but I'm the only one who stepped up to make them, so I had to go with my gut during the moment. When they arrived in the village on the back of a dragon, I had no clue what level of power they were trained to. For all I knew, the Jinchuuriki was beyond anything we could handle, and we already knew that Honiko herself was bare minimum Kage level 2 years ago. They also had Bayushi, a member of the Nature clan with the same Kekkai Genkai as Akame, and I had no clue how much he had trained it. There was an additional member aboard the dragon that appears to be a Kaguya, and I had absolutely no information on her. They came prepared to offer a truce just to showcase their abilities, although they wouldn't have thought twice about starting a fight right in the middle of the village."
Nariko had thought a lot about the events, and how she could have acted differently, but nothing to this point suggested that she should have had made any other choice. Things had gone mostly smoothly, and the Society hadn't caused any problems in the village during their stay. On the contrary, they kept mostly to themselves except for the matches. "Here came the enemy, offering us a chance to gain more information on them that we didn't collect 2 years ago, in a controlled manner to boot. I gambled a little bit, and my gamble paid off. Shimiko lost her match in one on one combat against Nozomi, and I'm sorry to say, but Shimiko is a stronger fighter than I am. But she wasn't around to respond to Honiko's appearance. You weren't around to respond to Honiko's appearance. Morikawa wasn't around. None of the Jounin prepared for that level of threat were around. Myself, Iro, and Akame were the ones who showed up."
Nariko had been worried about her choice when she made it, but it was the safest bet she had. "My hope had been, we watch them fight, keep an eye on them, and learn some more about them. Akame and I had already planned on having her infiltrate the Society as is, to get this information, learn all she could about them and hopefully take them apart. Unfortunately, she ended up comatose soon after, so I couldn't pursue that option. I'd wanted you around because of your unparalleled scouting abilities, but I understand why you didn't want to stick around with them here. I was going to have you track them when they left the village, so that we might be able to figure out where their base was, or at least fight them outside the village, when I know that they could do an immense amount of wide spread collateral."
She hoped that she answered Natsuru satisfactorily enough, but she really doubted that any reason would be readily accepted. But Nariko was the Raikage, and she had made her decision to do what she thought was best for the village. It wasn't an easy one for her to make, but she didn't have the luxury of relying on other people's advice at the time. She couldn't appear weak in front of Honiko, and had to maintain her authority or Honiko wouldn't have respected her rules at all.
"And frankly, I don't care how Kumogakure looked to the other villages. I treated them honorably, and this is my nation. I invited them here for peace. Some didn't show, and some did. I wanted Kumo to be safe more than I cared about public image. But Ryuko and Shimiko bested the other nation's champions. Even if we ultimately lost to a Jinchuuriki, they can't say that we're weak, since they didn't even get close to beating one of the Society's most valued weapons. That Rin Uchiha boy didn't stand a chance as soon as she switched to ninjutsu, and he was a very talented Swordsman. Masuyo fought and lost to Ryuko, and I'm almost certain that Shimiko could have mopped the floor with Ryuko if they would have fought. Kiri's showing was by far the weakest of any of the major villages. They have no reason to think we are weak without making themselves appear even more so."
"But yes, despite it turning out well, I am very, incredibly, sorry that I put you in an uncomfortable position Natsuru. I don't like doing that. I hope you can forgive me, but I understand if you can't."
