Yuichi sat on top of Hokage rock. He clung to a teddy bear he named Donut that he carried all the way up here with him. Most of his gear was on the ground beside him. His coat had been stuffed into his backpack. Bags started to form under his eyes hours ago.
Haru was sent to their uncle’s so Yuichi believed he was safe.
Yuichi took a deep breath. It was a pretty night. The stars were out and it was a full moon. He felt a light, warm breeze. He thought maybe he could fall asleep here.
The village was still surprisingly busy at this time of night. He watched many people making their way through the streets. They looked so small from up here.
It was not rare for Yuichi to feel powerless. This feeling, though, this he was not used to. He believed that having nice things would make him happy. That he could make Haru happy with nice things. Their village and their clan wanted them to be warriors, but Haru was just a boy. A scared one at that. Before long, the expectations placed on him would lead him down the same path as Yuichi. He would just be depressed.
Yuichi felt like he could cry.
What could he do? Haru had a talent few possessed. Surely, he would surpass Yuichi someday. Maybe it would be best if he went down that path. Maybe it would come naturally to him. Like it did for their mom.
Too soft. That is what their mother believed about Yuichi. He had always been soft. That’s why she locked him in his room to teach him to stop crying. She tried to make him hard and instead he became numb. He shut down. He wasn’t made for this life. That’s why he was still a genin, after all these years he could not bring himself to kill a man.
He sat there until morning, he watched as the sun rose and everything came to life. Yuichi had gotten no sleep, and today would not be an easy day. Today he would learn of his mothers fate
