Boring....boring...boring... When the call for soldiers to fight had been made, Yamamoto had signed up immediately but there was no desire in her to serve her country, fight its enemies or battle for its supremacy. She had taken this as an opportunity to expose herself to other ninjas, their skills and their own fighting styles all for the sake of being that push towards perfection she was searching for. However, that had not been the reality of her experience. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the experience so far had been rain, mud, rats, rodents and an unstimulating experience.

“Tch…” The swordsman grumbled to herself, marching along the no man’s land between the two trench networks on patrol, searching for...whatever was she searching for? Her commander said it was a security precaution to look out for infiltrators and other potential threats but honestly? What was she expected to do if she ran into an enemy ninja? ‘Kill them’ would be her commander’s solution but that ran into the problem of what she was supposed to do if she ran into a Jonin. Try not to die? Fight? Those sounded like woefully unreliable options.

Her boot splashed down into a muddy puddy, sending a splash of dirty water up to stain the anorak coat and trousers. Yamamoto groaned in irritation, clutching the weight of her sword at the coldness that was starting to seep through to her legs. Her garb may have been waterproof, and paired with a hood, but it was not the warmest thing in the entire world. The only saving grace was the fact it was a muddy brown colour to start with.

“Uwaaaaah….I’m bored…” but Yamamoto was still bored. So utterly bored. That may have been a petty and rather silly demand, but it wasn’t the lack of fun that irked her. It was the lack of stimulation. She wanted to fight someone. Anyone. Not to the death mind you but with sufficient threat to stimulate her slowly eroding senses. A lack of stimulation was a dangerous thing...

Madrigal moved through the trench like a wraith, dodging people left and right. The ground beneath him was slick with mud and blood and rain came down in a steady drizzle that never seemed to end. Shinobi corpses littered the ground and while they would be removed soon, for the moment they were simply another part of the trenches. Madrigal fought along with the Kirigakure forces. The call to arms had gone out and Madrigal soon found himself moving through the trenches, his byakugan active. It was the bonus of having the All-Seeing Eyes, one could patrol, without having to actually step foot from the trench. He moved through them, his eyes keeping close tabs on enemies and their movements as he looked for an intruder or easy mark. He was carefully keeping a count of the enemy numbers he could see and soon he would find a target that all alone. He moved around through the trench, keeping low and fast and at a certain point when the no man's land narrowed to only ten meters across he hopped up and dashed out for his target.

He moved as quickly as he could hand lashing out before striking the neck of his target. A Kumogakure nin that was too far away from his squad in that side of the trench went down after Madrigal blew out the man's throat. His limp body fell to the ground and that left the long haired man alone in this part of the trenches. The next closest man was over forty meters away and none were behind him. That put him in the perfect position to work his way down the trench, viciously tearing apart every single individual on this side. Which would all be Kumogakure shinobi. The trenches, a meter and a half wide, were perfect for his style of fighting and his eyes would let him see all around him. His intent was simple now, he would simply begin to press forward. Unless someone came to stop him there wouldn't much these nameless shinobi could do to him.

He wore a simple black tunic and pants, no headband although he did have the Kirigakure symbol emblazoned in a deep blue on his back. To show his allegiance in this fight. Upon his waist hung two hip pouches with his usual armament, kunai, explosive tags, medkit, ration pills and bandage wraps. He'd already had to play field surgeon assistant a few times today thanks to the incredible help the byakugan gave when it came to tracking down bullets and diagnosing problems. The five explosive tags were tied around the hilt of the kunai that were in his patch and he would begin to move down the trench toward his second victim, stepping over the corpse of the first. His eyes told him all and he could see the woman in the white cloak in the no man's land on patrol some fifty yards from his position. He would have to watch out for her to flank him, but now that he had her location he could easily watch her.

A sudden dread gripped Yamamoto’s heart, her eyes snapping to look behind, above and around her. She had no reason to think there was a specific threat present, at least beyond that of the ever-present rival army on the other side of no-man’s land, but...still. Something felt wrong suddenly. She tightened her grip upon her blade and sighed, deciding that it would actually be best for her to follow her instincts and see what turned up.

“Ugh...I suppose I should at least make a pretence of doing my job.” She inhaled, holding her breath as chakra extended through her limbs. The burning sensation of a stake being hammered into her body extended throughout her system; an all-consuming heat that was best described as unpleasant. Eventually, it passed, replaced by the all too familiar feeling of emptiness and weightlessness.

The chakra did not simply stop there, however. It spread further, extending down into the ground through her feet and outwards across the no man’s land. She counted the two members of her patrol ahead of her not exactly intimately aware of their chakra but who else could it have been? Had a target been working their way from front to back she would have only counted a single target in front of her, unless it was a duo of course but the two in front of her were still moving forwards and she did not detect anyone except them.

Yamamoto turned her focus backwards, tuning into the feedback coming from the other direction, revealing the culprit or at least who Yamamoto assumed was the one responsible for killing her comrade. In truth, she was putting a lot on a single possible assumption but if she was wrong and the one behind her was not a target, then she would simply dash in the other direction.

It was at this moment she really wished that she had been given a means to communicate with or alert her comrades. She yet again turned her chakra inwards, focusing it into her blade and her legs before running. She charged towards the figure at the rear of her column who, unknown to her at this stage, was Madrigal, and unsheathed her sword. She jumped, danced and manoeuvred over no-man’s land, ignoring the dead, craters and other obstacles.

She descended upon her target, coming only to a stop once she had made visual contact with him. Her expression was a neutral and unguarded thing, a soft smile at total odds with the situation before her.

“Hello! Are you the one responsible for freeing my comrade from this mortal coil?” Even with her monstrously long blade unsheathed and at her side, there was no feeling of malice or hate. Even as the rain pattered down upon the mud-soaked ground, Yamamoto understood the simple truth in all this. It was simply the life she, and her nameless comrades, had signed up for. Lamenting the reality of the existence you chose for yourself was a thing she had cut away from herself many a moon ago.

“Hmmm...well I am just going to assume you are. You know...we do not really have to do this. I am yet to find one stimulating enough to raise steel against.” She knew any Shinobi with even the slightest concept of loyalty would reject her proposal out right, but it never hurt to try.

As his eyes saw the woman in the white cloak begin to move toward his location he would already be reaching into his pouch for a kunai. As he took the handle, channeling chakra into the tag upon it, he would throw it directly toward the woman. The knife was aimed at her arm, in particularly her sword arm. The intent simple enough, cripple her ability to combat him, and then none here would be able to stop him from absolutely devastating the fools in this trench. He could tell which arm was the proper target by judging how the sword was on her body. The knife would fly through the air at merely D+ speed aimed right for where she was heading as she dashed toward his location. If all went proper, she would run directly into the knife as it flew through the air silently. Meanwhile he would cease moving forward, allowing her to aim properly for where she was meant to be. As the knife flew through the air however, four more appeared into existence, making the attack especially devastating should they land as she ran. The first one was aimed for for her arm, a second one would be going for center mass, the third would be going for the shoulder of the same arm the original was armed. The fourth would go for the hip on that side as well and the fifth would be off course, appearing too far out from the original to still be aimed at her form in anyway.

That was fine though, the other four were all he needed for this task and should the attack land it would give him a massive advantage over his opponent. As he threw the original kunai, his opposite hand would form the half ram seal and the kunai should meet her at the five meter point away from him, as he threw knife the moment she started to turn toward him. His byakugan giving him all of the insight he needed in order to see the direction of her movements. Should it become clear to him that she would manage to counteract the original blade, he would detonate the explosive tag upon it's hilt and cause an explosion to radiate outward from the blade for four and a half meters in every direction. The explosion would barely keep from engulfing him and he would stand ready in the trench, the next attack already coming to his mind as he watched.

So much for the peaceful approach. Yamamoto had accelerated towards him not to attack but to approach him, if only for the sake of closing the gap before anything occurred but of course that would have been assumed to be a hostile action. She saw the single kunai flying towards her and then the four behind it. To a lesser person they may have seemed fast but even with Yamamoto’s limited visual cognition, she could tell they were by no means fast enough to keep up with her.

With a single sweeping slash of her sword she knocked the majority of the kunai out of the air, only for her to feel the blistering heat of an exploding paper tag. She took advantage of her speed to jump to her left, landing inside a puddle that had formed in the bottom of the trench. The mud splashed upwards and she moved forward towards her foe, sword held with both hands pointing forwards. There was no way she would be able to adopt, or even fight, in her regular stance and so this alternative thrusting one was implemented.

She launched herself forward, eyes locked firmly upon the Hyuga. She leaped from one side of the trench’s wall to another, adhering herself to them temporarily with her chakra if only to make gauging her moves harder. She would run down the trench until she was a mere meter away from her opponent and then launch herself off the wall opposite to Madrigal. Now free from the confines of the trench she would swing her down at the Hyuga, trusting her superior speed to work in her favour.

He would watch as she began to swing at the kunai and as it become clear that she would counter the kunai he would detonate the explosive tag upon the original kunai. Given that his hand was already in the seal to do so this would happen immediately and the explosion would radiate outward from the exploding tag before the blade would be able to reach the knife. She would be one meter away from the knife at that point and the explosion would theoretically hit her. Provided this occurred Madrigal would climb out of the trench after ensuring he wasn't hit by his own explosion by using it as cover, using one of his kunai as a hand hold to stab into the two meter tall trench, grasping onto the hilt and channeling chakra into it. Once he climbed out, leaving the kunai down there, he would drop into his gentle fist stance, legs bent at the knees and spread shoulder width apart. Arms up, bent at the elbows, palms open and facing the target with his nondominant hand closer to his body.

The stance would give him much more fluid motion and allow him to move and react faster than he normally would. It would also give him a minor speed increase, but it wasn't anything to write home about. He would ensure he had plenty of space to move from within the stance, a meter from the trench edge to be specific. Regardless of everything he would keep his eyes on all around him with his Byakugan, watching for any potential threat. The veins around his eyes would bulge grotesquely, a clear tell of the usage of the All-Seeing Eye.

“Sh-” She saw the tag just too late, eyes going wide with an understandable level of panic. Before she had even fully internalised the danger proposed her legs moved, muscles pushing her legs to make her jump sideways. She may have avoided the worst of the explosion, but Yamamoto’s hair was still singed and the familiar burning feeling of having been well, burnt clung to her body. She was likely to have managed to fling her body into the trench, crashing against the wall before staggering forwards, pulling herself back together.

Yamamoto shook off the disorientation and charged down the length of the trench, relying on her sensory jutsu to keep track of her opponent’s location. She jumped from trench wall to trench wall, relying on chakra to keep herself attached to them, building up speed and height until she was parallel to the Hyuga. Yamamoto launched herself off the trench wall opposite to the Hyuga, jumping from the trench and running towards him at full pelt.

She covered the meter difference in less than a second, adopting the most basic and fundamental style available to her. She thrust her sword forwards towards her opponent’s throat, an emotionally detached expression decorating her features. She was focusing not upon his throat but instead, his hands and feet. It was unfortunate she had little idea what the Byakugan even was but in truth, it mattered little to her. The only option she had at the end of the day was to employ her sword.

The explosion would go off and a burned and shinged form would leap from the flames and into the trench, crashing hard against the wall of the trench before she was on her feet in an instant and moving down it at high speed. Her sword in hand. Madrigal would drop into a gentle fist stance as she moved, his eyes tracking her easily and as she closed the distance the sword would flash out for his throat in a long thrust. The Hyuga would shift to the side, making the sword miss his throat and neck and poke out between his hair. At the same moment, his hands, which would be facing her, would launched a compressed cone of Chakra, Vacuum Palm. The cone would expand out, taking up the entire trenches space and move to fling the woman bodily back while causing a bit of damage. The purpose was to create some distance between them, he wasn’t able to catch blades with his hands. Although this encounter did give him the idea of working on a way to do that so he could defend himself from them much more easily in the future.

Madrigal would then move to fall into a different stance, provided his opponent was indeed five meters away. He wouldn’t be jumping around the various walls to move about and trying to confuse his opponent. The Gentle Fist style was too grounded for that and it simply wouldn’t work as well if he did. He needed to remain where he was, feet planted, and counter each of his opponents actions. The stance he was in now, was for a new technique he’d been working on. It was the Eight Trigrams: Sixty-Four Palms Technique and he would dash forward intent upon making the technique land. First he would aim to land two strikes, aimed for tenketsu. Then he would aim two, then four more, then eight more, then sixteen more. Provided this combination landed his opponent would feel an intense amount of chakra shut off and the best was yet to come.

Now out of the trench and on the open fields, Yamamoto confidently believed that she had the advantage in terrain which she did. The length of her sword demanded a wide space in order to effectively swing it. Sadly, none of that helped as the Hyuga simply side stepped her thrust, before holding her hands towards her and launching a cone of sheer force towards her. Yamamoto swung her sword sideways, intending to dig its teeth into the Hyuga’s throat just as the cone impacted her, sending her flying back towards the trench. Luckily enough, she did manage to stop herself before falling into it.

Yamamoto regained her balance and stood up to her full height, holding her sword at her side with her left hand. She rolled her neck around, trying to loosen the sudden stiffness in her muscles only to realise something. Those eyes, that stance, the sudden force that had sent her flying and her suddenly dropped chakra levels. Everything suddenly clicked into place. Despite knowing nothing about the capabilities of those white eyes it was pretty hard for her to not recognise them.

“Byakugan huh? That is what those eyes are right? I have no idea what it is capable of but I do know this: it was a talent you were born with.” Yamamoto smiled. Her lips spread apart, a broad grin decorating her features. She only knew the most surface level details of how this jutsu, passed along by blood, worked but honestly? She did not care about that. Yamamoto would surpass it regardless. There was one jutsu she had been practicing as of late and this made a wonderful chance to put it into practice.

“Alright… I will consume your talent with my skill” There was bloodthirst in her eyes now. Excitement and passion replacing the general apathetic aesthetic her features had been graced with up until now. The stance her opponent had adopted was totally unknown to Yamamoto but common sense, and that strange difficulty she was suddenly facing in regulating her chakra flow, was enough to tell her she did not wish to get hit by it.

As had been par for the course Yamamoto yet again changed her stance. She stepped back with her right foot, placing her left foot in front of her, adopting the Red Tiger stance. One may have assumed that was because her left foot was her dominant foot but in truth, both her feet were equally dominant. She then went on the attack, intentionally stepping into the range of the eight trigrams but the moment this Hyuga attacked, she would counter. This was do or die. An unpracticed technique going up under a real combat scenario.

Yamamoto saw the attack coming, the Hyuga’s palm thrusting towards her intentionally unguarded body. Chakra burned through her body, a burning and sweltering heat igniting her brain and muscles in a flurry of sparks. She felt a thumping in her brain, the sound of hammering steel ringing out, oxygen flooding through her lungs and then...nothing. A moment of perfect clarity. Everything seemed to be in slow motion for her, Yamamoto’s limbs moving of their own according to counter the blow, without a single conscious command on her part.

She learned back on her right foot, pivoting on the left foot into a spinning motion. The ball of her right foot was used for balance as, she hoped anyway, the Hyuga’s initial blow would miss her. She took advantage of the opening that would pose, lips wide and pupils dilated with excitement as she brought her blade to bear. The spinning motion translated into a horizontal slash, aimed for the Hyuga’s right (his right) arm at the elbow, aiming to slash its tendon.

Her words would echo hollowly and have no response forthcoming, for Madrigal simply didn't believe in speaking during a fight. The fight was 'all' that mattered and words were meaningless. All things within his visual range were within his grasp to react to and as such when his initial strike missed, he still fully saw the attack that was coming for his arm from the weapon and how her stance best led into it via using the pivot on her back foot. Madrigal, in response, would try to utilize a technique he had never actually used before. Well that wasn't true, he had in fact practiced it quite a few times but he hadn't actually used it in a spar with anyone, much less an actual fight, however now seemed to best time to at least try to use the technique to defend against the attack that would slash the tendon in his right arm. See, the gentle fist is a taijutsu style designed specifically for the Hyuga and none other can truly utilize it to the fully effectiveness of one. At least, not without their prized Byakugan. What makes the Gentle Fist so special, and the Hyuga specifically, is the fact that chakra can easily be expelled via any chakra point on their body, as opposed to the hands and feet that most shinobi tend to focus on.

With this in mind, the Hyuga have a technique designed to utilize this capability defensively. The Gentle Fist Art: One Blow Body was a technique that could be utilized versatilely although it was in essence a 'catch-up' technique. It was designed to defend from a disadvantageous position and get the user back on a level playing field. Sadly, being a taijutsu user against a sword user was a disadvantageous position no matter how one looked at it but the technique would come in handy this time. He'd expel the chakra from the tenketsu at the moment the blade touched him. He'd channel a decent bit of chakra into the technique in an attempt to knock the blade aside and open his opponent up to an attack. Either way the blade should be successfully defended, it was only a question of if it would be pushed far enough away to still be a factor or not. Once that was handled Madrigal would pivot and launch another Vacuum Palm at ludicrously close range straight at his opponent center of mass.

Should this mass of chakra hit it could potentially throw her directly into or even over the trench. Either way it would put him at a much more advantageous position as he would have some space to work with and in one scenario he'd even have the high ground. His movements were continuously fluid and graceful through these actions, the natural poise of the Hyuga settling into his muscles and bones in ways he never expected to feel since he wasn't born a member of the clan. He was made into one.

The blade swung, its metal edge coming dangerously close to the Hyuga only to be knocked away by a sudden eruption of chakra, exposing her to a counterattack. Yamamoto found the opening obviously taken advantage of, the vacuum palm hitting her square in the centre of her torso. The swordsman was sent flying, crashing into the trench she had only just gotten out of. Her body splashed into a puddle, mud covering her from head to foot. She would jump to her feet in a matter of mere moments, as a sudden realisation set in. This current status quo was not in her favour.

Jumping back out of the trench the swordsman, as contrary to her behaviour up until now, opted not to charge in. She held her sword at one side, emotionless gaze resting upon Madrigal. Whatever bloodlust there had been passed as quickly as it had come, cold logic and a deeply hidden frustration at her apparent inability to break this stalemate. So far, her foe had remained silent and refused to talk which was understandable but...hmmm. Yamamoto would pace left and right, sword held firmly but openly at her side.

Hmm...this feels rather pointless does it not? You have the advantage on defence and me on offence. At the current rate things will be going very badly for you but…” She turned her gaze towards the opposite direction, the side of the trench network that Madrigal had run from and an idea spawned in her head. All she needed to do was break this stalemate.

I wonder...can you defend your comrades from it? If I seek to make my way to your trench and cut a bloody path through it, will you be able to stop me? Your defences are mighty indeed but...your comrades lack them. So what will you do?” Revealing one’s plan may have seemed foolish and not tactically sound but combat was as much a psychological battle as it was a physical one and Yamamoto was definitely willing to take a gamble on the chance of Madrigal having more loyalty to his comrades than Yamamoto did.

Madrigal would wait patiently as she began to pace, sword at her side as she watched him carefully. Then she would begin to speak and a small smirk would play across his features as her intent came to him. He wasn't at the disadvantage here, every time he hit her with the Vacuum Palm she would lose more and more chakra and as she used more he would edge ahead in chakra until finally she blacked out. He would be nearly dry himself though if he were to guess. Such things usually ended up that way in the world and it was rather boring to go through all of the effort with none of the gain. Aside from that, if she actually risked running into his trench, which housed both Kirigakure and Konohagakure shinobi, she would lose out. The Alliance simply had more shinobi and could afford to lose more of them. If she went to his trench and starting killing, he would simply go to hers and do the same. The overall loss would much more heavily affect Kumogakure than the Alliance in the end. With his byakugan active the numbers even proved that. There were far more overall shinobi on his side within the twenty kilometer area than hers. They couldn't simply roll them up because they would take too many losses for that to be practical, but if something did happen to his trench here he could reinforced in minutes.

However that too was a bit too crass for his tastes. No, if he couldn't win without having enough chakra to continue, and he couldn't counter her idea of killing those in his side of the trench with his own because of what it might do to his reputation, then the other option was to simply stop fighting. That was probably what she wanted anyway he would wager. He had proven far too tough for her to crack over all and now she wanted to back down with as much grace as possible. People like this, who only wanted easy fights, sickened Madrigal to be honest, but perhaps this could happen in such a way to be beneficial to everyone. "I wouldn't even bother trying to stop you. I would simply run to your trench and start my own slaughter. Your village can't absorb the same kind of losses both Kirigakure and Konohagakure together can and you know it." He would begin, his form never moving from it's stance as he spoke. "I propose this instead, we agree to stop fighting. A temporary ceasefire between the trenches until, lets say dawn." He would say, checking the sky with his byakugan and seeing that it was about nine in the morning. That would give both sides of the trench a chance to rest for about a day. A respite he was certain both sides could certainly use. "That gives everyone a chance to rest and the opportunity to relax a bit." He would say, as if that wasn't obvious, with some people you never did know after all.

Oh? Are you sure about that? There are Shinobi here on our side of the trench network far more dangerous than myself….but I do not care about that. In fact, I am entirely unconcerned about this war at all. I’m really only here to practice my skills. I must thank you for that by the way. You have taught me one major weakness I must address.” Yamamoto’s tone was polite and reserved, lacking any real emotional investment at the matter in hand. It was the voice of a free spirit, detached from any and all worldly concerns beyond those demanded by her body’s needs.

A ceasefire?...Hmmm…….are you perhaps underestimating my ability? Well, I will not deny that you have the advantage currently but…...hmmm…….sure~ I am unconcerned with this war's outcome. ” Just like that she sheathed her sword, the elongated blade sliding back into its scabbard with a satisfying sliding sound. Then, innocently and perhaps naively, she walked towards Madrigal only to extend her left hand towards him in a gesture of trust.

But do know this. I am merely a genin. I can not promise my side will honour this ceasefire….hmmm it looks like the rains may be coming.” Yamamoto turned her gaze upwards towards the sky, watching a slowly rolling in cover of grey approaching. She wished she had access to her tea right now. She did not exactly enjoy or even that strongly desire tea but it was a good beverage for communicating over or at least, that was one of the silly ideas she had yet to discard.

He would listen to her words simply, his Byakugan still active and scanning the surrounding chakra signatures and confirming his earlier estimations. He could indeed any anyone in their side of the trench inside of twenty kilometers. Could do so with minimal effort as well. She had been the best opponent he would face this day and it would seem that they fight was being cut short. Which was a shame but he was more than willing to let it occur if it meant he could further endear himself to the forces of Kirigakure. That would always be a good thing when it came to his continued service to them. Her gratitude at him teaching her of weaknesses, at least one major one apparently, would be met with a nod from him. "Anytime." He would say, with a small smirk on his features at the idea.

Her agreement to the ceasefire was met with a secondary nod. Although her further elaboration that she was in fact only a genin would be met with a shrug. "Higher ups love breaks as much as the next. Tell them any sneak attack wouldn't work because they have a Byakugan and they might just accept the idea and let it happen. No attack can get through to us unnoticed with me within the trenches." He would say, it wasn't boasting, the words were stated as if they were simple, and unaltered fact. In response to her comment about the rain he would tilt his head to the side. With his Byakugan he could see a bit into the stratosphere and of course that meant all of the Troposphere which was where the vast majority of weather occurred. He couldn't see air pressure changes but he could definitely see the lightning that moved from cloud to cloud, gathering energy before striking down into the earth in the distance. A clap of thunder came with the visual appearance and Madrigal raised an eyebrow at his previous opponent as if to say 'You don't say?'.

"We could always fight more in the rain if you wish instead Miss..?" He would offer with a small grin. A fight was always enjoyable. The pause was for the obvious inclusion of her name, which he had yet to learn. He would of course share his in return, although she might not know that. Regardless if they weren't going to be fighting they might as well chat. It wasn't like they would get any less soaked here outside of the trenches than within them.

Do you have any tea?” It was an odd question, one with an answer Yamamoto most likely felt would be a no which would have been a shame. Still, she was willing to go out on a limb and hope that he did, or least that he had some tea bags. Yamamoto could easily get her hands on some fresh water, a few tea cups and a means to boil water. Hell, as she thought about it there was also a chance of finding an abandoned dug out. The constant back and forth of the war and the natural rate of attrition associated with such a style of conflict had resulted in plenty of those that was for sure.

Hmmm if you say so. The highest member of the chain I have met was my patrol’s squad leader and they were unwilling to even accompany us. Perhaps they are a coward?” In a rare display of how she really felt about things, Yamamoto’s eyes twisted into a contemptuous expression. For her direct superior to be ordering her to stray out into no man’s land with little protection against Shinobi of the Hyuga’s calibre and then cower away in the relative safety of the trench.

Oh? My name?” As quickly as it came the painting of contempt faded away, Yamamoto’s expression returning to a picture of perfect neutrality. She went silent for a minute, a hollow and neutral smile growing over her face. Her name..her name..her name… Under normal circumstances she would have simply given her name out freely but despite this current truce, Madrigal WAS still an enemy Shinobi from a village she was currently at war with.

Hmmm...Bishamonten and do not worry. As much as I hate to admit it, I am outclassed currently but...in the future when I have stepped closer to Boido...would you be willing to let me test my steel against you again?” The Kunoichi asked that question earnestly and with naive innocence. Her only goal was to improve. The wars, accumulation of wealth and mortal pleasures were nothing to her. Ah...that was right wasn’t it…? Not only did she have to empty herself of herself, she needed to empty herself of worldly matters.

Yamamoto pulled up her hood, gray hair hiding away from the rains that began to pour from the heavens.

Her sudden question would surprise the black haired Hyuga and he'd take a moment to blink at her before chuckling. "I have what I need to make it and a tent that would keep the rain off of us and more importantly, the tea. Let's see if we can get this ceasefire going and if so should you agree to help me set the tent up, I'll share the tea with you." He would say before wordlessly raising a hand and flashing a few hand signs for those within his trench to see. They weren't seals for jutsu, it was a sign language that was used by shinobi to communicate silently. He hadn't quite finished learning the Kirigakure's version yet, but he did know the Konoha one and the two villages were closely aligned. After a short pause a resounding cheer came from his side of the trench and with his Byakugan active he could see the higher ups looking mildly annoyed however they too nodding acquiescence. They wanted to win the field utterly, but countermanding the move with all of the men and women in the trenches so obviously excited for a short respite would be almost akin to suicide when they lived in a world of assassins.

With one side having agreed to it so enthusiastically the other would almost have to lest the former fight with even more ferocity. The higher ups Yamamoto spoke of would literally be forced into a rock and a hard place by this move as they would have to agree or risk being assassinated in their sleep as well. It was all too easy for a shinobi to do so if one really wanted and denying such a respite to ones men as well as denying it to the enemy in this case would put a target upon their head like they wouldn't believe. A runner from the Kirigakure trench moved over to  the Kumogakure trench carefully, watching for any jutsu. A messenger was easily recognized and a flag of truce was held in hand and in the other a message. When he reached the other trench he was allowed it reluctantly given that the Kumogakure side was aware that something was up that had the other trench excited but was still as of yet unsure what that might be.

Madrigal however would turn his attention fully back to Yamamoto. Of course his attention would seemingly never have left her given that his eyes let him see this all without moving his head. When she introduced herself as 'Bishamonten' Madrigal would nod his head before giving a name of his own. "Surima, and sure, I'll be willing to spar again any day provided this blasted war ends. Just don't expect to win." He would say with a grin. With that he would obviously turn his head to the side looking at where the messenger had gone in. If the man had gone in and didn't come out, the fighting would resume regardless of what Madrigal and Yamamoto might want. Madrigal waited patiently for the message and decision to become obvious, keeping his byakugan carefully focused on Yamamoto as well to ensure she didn't take a swing at him.

Hmmmm you are risking an awful lot you realise? There is every possibility that this may backfire.” She silently watched and waited, yellow eyes focusing upon the Hyuga’s hand signs. However, the lack of any jutsu or painfully obvious chakra build up told her they served some other purpose, and given how an audible cheer went up from the opposing trench Yamamoto could only assume it was a means by which to communicate. Interesting idea really. She should look into the prospect of Kumogakure having an alternative.

The messenger would eventually be allowed to leave the Kumo trench, a formal response to the truce in hand. The powers that be, at least for this trench section anyway, had accepted the truce. They were not happy with it at first but upon careful consideration realised it would be a good opportunity to rest their soldiers and allow morale to improve. It was also a good opportunity in general to perform maintenance on the trench. The water table here was rather high so flooding was common, as were wall collapses.

Hmmm perhaps when I have cut away my weaknesses. There is little I find more boring than a stalemate. You may scoff at me but I have a good measure of your capabilities Surima Hyuga. That is what you are correct?” It was a rather easy assumption to make and one she was so confident in, that a creeping grin spread across her face.

Do lead the way then.” Yamamoto would confidently and perhaps naively follow Madrigal to where this tent of his was. It was obvious that he did not have it on his person and it was also equally unlikely that he wished to set up camp right in the middle of No Man’s land.

Madrigal would shrug at her words before responding. "And if it does we go back to what we were doing and the world keeps spinning." He would say simply. It was the truth of the matter. The wheel weaves as the wheel wills after all. Madrigal would take a moment to fix his cuffs, as his eyes caught the conversation between the Kumogakure commanders and the truce. He focused intently upon their moving lips, reading them as they spoke and knew before the messenger had even left what was occurring. Without even batting an eyelash he would whip a scroll out from his belt and unfurl it before unsealing something. A poof of smoke later and there he had a large tent, still rolled up and all with a tarp that was designed to help keep the rain out that was to be set up on four poles outside of the tent. Making a shadow clone and passing some of the burden over to it he would begin work setting up the tent. Right there in the No Man's Land. He knew it was an odd occurrence but at that moment it seemed like the perfect thing to do. The temporary ceasefire would raise morale on both sides but this action would establish dominance.

The tent even proudly displayed Kirigakure's symbol on it, did doing this make him a dick? Perhaps. The clone would assist in setting up the tent, which would be much closer to Kumogakure's side due to their positioning and within short order it would be completed. It was a large tent, easily big enough for Madrigal to walk into at his height of 6'5. Inside the clone would begin digging a fire pit, using a Vacuum Palm of two angled for the entry way that Madrigal held open to make the task go by faster before using a simple flint and tinder and some clean wood he'd had sealed away to start a fire. This would give the tent a cozy warmth to it and once that was done the clone would set up a pot over the fire with clean water in it to heat. Then the clone would dispel. Madrigal would step into the tent, holding the flap open for Yamamoto. Then he would step further into the tent before getting a tea pot the clone had left out and an infuser with green tea leaves within it.

"To answer your question, yes, I am a Hyuga, and I wasn't scoffing. Merely being playful." He would say as he took the water off the fire when it was about 160 degrees. He had made tea enough time in the past to know how to time it properly and then he added both the infuser and the water to the tea pot to allow it to steep. Then he procured two cups from this magic narrative driven sealing scroll before setting them aside to wait. After a few minutes, to ensure the tea was strong, he opened the tea pot and pulled out the infuser by it's small handle that didn't fall into the water before setting the infuser aside and pouring two cups of the tea, one for each. Then he set the teapot back down before sitting back and motioning for his ceasefire companion to pick whichever cup she might want. "Now then, just drinking tea together is so boring, so let us talk if that's not too much trouble. Tell me Miss Bishamonten what made you wish to pursue swordsmanship." He would ask curiously. Assuming she took a cup he would take the other and take a drink of it, allowing the comforting warmth of his dominance establishing fire and the equally comforting warmth of the green tea, to flow through him.

Yes. That is true and neither of us desire that.” Stagnancy, repetition, stalemates. These were pointless things, foolish and wasteful expenditures of energy that ultimately served no point. That was why Yamamoto had sought to avoid getting bogged down in a fight that could not be decisively ended either way. If she was to die she would die, if she was to slay Madrigal she was to slay him. It was a matter that she was willing to leave up to the gods to decide. However…..a part of Yamamoto also wished to live beyond day. What did her neighbor always say? You did not win wars by dying for your country?

Yamamoto watched as Surima created a clone of himself and then conjured a tent from a scroll. Fuinjutsu and shadow clones? The swordsman realised that she had in fact underestimated this Hyuga’s abilities as being restrained to purely defensive ones but then...hmmm… why had he not employed his clones earlier? Perhaps he had simply been kept upon the back foot and unable to employ anything except that defensive technique he had been using.

Yamamoto assisted in the assembly of the tent, working with the Hyuga to feed the tent’s stakes through the canvas they would soon be holding up. Next she thrust the stakes into the ground, propping the roof up over the canvas that was serving as the floor. It did not look to be the most comfortable place in the world but it was better than sitting in the rains. Yamamoto walked inside the tent, sitting down on the floor and making herself as comfortable as she could.

Hmm...what made me pursue it…? I feel the answer is the same as why you pursue your Byakugan. It was simply the path before me.” It was a non-answer but it was the only one Yamamoto would give. She soon grew silent, drinking her tea in peace. It was rather a nice cup of tea but alas, all good things must come to an end and soon the rains ended, the light of the day dying as the sun set.

I appreciate the tea but it seems as if things must come to an end The day grows long and once the morning comes we will unfortunately be enemies. Hmm...if we do meet again in the course of this war, perhaps we could simply turn a blind eye to the other?” Unless Surima wished to inquire about anything else, such as Yamamoto’s earlier non-answer, she would rise to her feet, downing the remainder of her tea before returning the empty cup to her host.

She walked out of the tent, stepping out into the muggy and humid evening air before beginning the long walk to her home trench. It was a rather long debrief she had waiting for her on account of how she had basically abandoned her patrol but they had simply assumed she was dead, so it was not a difficult task to avoid any real punishment.

Madrigal would chuckle at her proposal of ignoring one another in coming conflicts. It was an amusing thought, tempting even, however he wouldn't do so. He had to maintain his loyalty to Kirigakure. He was being watched he knew, by any who looked at him. They saw him as someone who changed from Konoha to Kirigakure. There were those that saw him as a traitor they couldn't really touch. Attempts had been made to let him die, ignoring a potential danger for him so that they might get lucky and ensure they didn't have a traitor in their midst. His Byakugan always led him through though. They'd never catch him off guard with it active and they couldn't overtly try anything without being called traitors themselves and killed like rabid dogs. He had to prove that he was loyal to Kirigakure, prove it to everyone who called him traitor. That meant he couldn't afford to avoid a fight, ever. If he saw her again, saw Yamamoto again, he woudn't turn the other way. Wouldn't ignore her, he'd engage, and he'd either win and protect his fellow allied shinobi, or lose and it wouldn't matter anymore.

"Sorry Bishamonten-san, can't do that. When we see each other again it'll be as enemies, and I'll have to treat you as one, and I expect you to do the same for me." He would say simply as he walked her to the exit of the tent and opened it for her. Then he retreated back into his tent and enjoyed the warmth provided. He was back on their side of the lines by morning when the fighting started again and some were laughing at his actions the day prior. Not at him mind, but with him. His willingly to pitch his tent right there next to the enemy line after the ceasefire was accepted was a spit in the face of the Kumogakure shinobi and some members of the allied forces had seen it as that and welcome him back. Yes, he would gain their trust and respect one day, it would just take time.
