The trip so far has been pretty uneventful which was to be expected since they left a hidden village. Rin was used to wearing armor pieces around his arms and legs so that part was no issue. The vest that he wore didn’t seem to slow him down since it was the core of his body holding it up. Even so, Rin was a little bit winded as well, though from his perspective Taichi looks like he’s running a marathon and Rin noticed Sera’s occasional slightly wavering step that carried extra weight upon it. ‘Is she simply not used to wearing armor?’ Rin thought to himself, but this was actually another reason when Sera and Rin first met he suggested taking their equipment during their short jog. Rin reflects on that, and maybe just from this little trip between one village to the next would help Sera.
When Masuyo called for lunch time or in other words a break both Sera and Taichi looked really grateful. Normally Rin would suggest to keep going, but gauging how his body is feeling a little bit of food wouldn’t hurt too much. Plus his other two teammates look like they were about to fall apart so Rin quietly sat at the edge of the camp’s perimeters. More or less silently volunteered to keep watch. Plus everybody else seems to have a role in place, and with Rin being literally silent throughout this trip he probably would be easy to miss. He is beginning to realize the benefits of being quiet because Rin is noticing a lot of things such as the many bugs of variety sorts. Such as beetles clinging on the trees, the different types of spiders weaving their web between certain trees, caterpillars gradually chewing on leaves, and even raccoons when one decided to peek its head out of its hole in one of the trees. But what if something happened and Rin needed to warn the others?
That was the downside of being quiet, and Rin noticed Masuyo leaving the camp towards what Rin picks up is the sound of water. They are near a river if Rin remembers correctly, so maybe to gather resources? From the corner of his eye Rin noticed Sera taking off the sweater, and it was one choice of clothing that Rin wouldn’t recommend in this warm climate and during this season no less. It is a quick way to dehydrate unless that sweater holds specific fibers to absorb the sweat and cools the body off like that. Turning Rin’s watchful eyes over to Taichi who happens to take a seat, or bed, on a sole rock and is trying to avoid eye contact. A small smile spreads across his lips as Rin thought, ‘Seems like we have a bashful Taichi in our midst.’
Of course Rin does blush a bit, but it doesn’t have the same effect on him as it does with Taichi. It is more like ‘I am just gonna… step over here and ooo what is this bug?’ More like giving these two some personal space as Rin climbs up on a tree and perches on the highest branch. Getting a general view of the area around them and with his sight alone Rin felt confident that not much could hide from him. Taking a deep breath, Rin would lean against the trunk of the tree before placing his left hand on the trunk. Opening his mind as Rin expanded his range of perspective many meters away from them. All the way to a maximum of 250 meters as the chakra stimulates his senses and makes everything seems slower again yet picking up more details. Such as the sap oozing out of the tree Rin is leaning against, but it is a gradual movement that he would’ve missed if Rin wasn’t paying attention.
Still Rin is genuinely surprised for how far he can sense, and the fact that this range is five times larger than he could do before just days ago. The amount of living creatures around them is more than Rin could count other than it is definitely more than twenty. One of the signatures that Rin definitely notices is Masuyo’s and there is quite a dozen other living things swimming around and away from her. Most definitely fish, and probably trout since it was a common fish to catch. But he does note the number of frogs around the shoreline. Crickets and… is that a crab? It was hard to tell, but the chakra holding the flame-like appearance holds the vague silhouette of a crab as it seems to be mostly buried in the sand under the water. Rin just hopes Masuyo is careful since she is close to it for it might pinch her toe or something it could clamp down on with its claw.
The amount of snakes that are in this area is unreal as Rin counts at least five of them within the first hundred meters from the camp. Still it seems like they’re keeping their distance which is fine, and one snake seems to have snatched a lone squirrel when it was on the ground trying to find food. Birds of various sizes and types Rin could pick up amongst the trees and on the branches nearby only serves to expand his perspective. ‘There is so much life here in this forest, and yet before i noticed only a dozen when in reality there are hundreds living in this forest alone.’ That’s when Rin noticed that there was a hawk, a single hawk, perched on a branch just opposite from him.
The hunter glares at Rin with the unnerving, non-blinking eyes as they focus on Rin. Rin got the impression that it was kind of confused as to why Rin was this high up on the tree when only birds and other prey like to hide up on the branches. The boy smiled as he raised a hand in greeting to the hawk, but what Rin did not expect is when the hawk flew at the boy. Merely moving his arm to the bird’s path, the hawk lands on his right arm as its sharp talons scratched at the steel guards. To Rin’s surprise the hawk did not peck at him or really attacked him as it is turning its head around most likely looking for prey. Rin remembers the messenger birds and how it takes falconeer training to get a hawk to land on his arm and not straight up attacking him. So why is this one not doing that? The weight this hawk gives is a bit heavier than Rin expected, but not enough to where he couldn’t hold it.
Seeing what is a squirrel running around on a different tree, the bird takes off with just a flap of its feathery wings. The squirrel tried to run around in circles on the tree trying to confuse the hawk, but the bird was smarter and simply hovered for a moment until the squirrel came around. Before the squirrel could think to evade, the hawk snatched up the prey with its talons sinking into the soft belly. Then the predator flew back to Rin as he held up his right arm once again to allow the hawk to perch on his arm. Once the hawk was perched on Rin’s right arm, with one foot raising up the hawk began eating the squirrel. Honestly this whole thing baffles the boy, but unless somebody is actively paying attention only Rin notices this because it is happening to him. Plus he’s not making a sound and neither is the bird drawing attention to itself.
