    History


    The Yokai believe themselves to be descendants of ancient spirits from whom they claim their name, spirits of various abilities and supernatural powers who, the clan believes, became their Mothers and Fathers. The Yokai have, as a result, also considered themselves to be separate from ordinary Humans and often refer to themselves as "Autosaidā" or "Outsider" when speaking about their relationship with the rest of Humanity and the Shinobi World in general. It is only recently that the Yokai have chosen to attempt integrating themselves into ordinary society, mainly due to a sharp decline in their numbers due to many members venturing off into unknown lands and never returning or persecution from a populace scared of those unlike themselves. As a result, Yokai of all 'Paths' as they call their separate Bloodlines have begun to congregate in Shinobi Villages - namely Kumogakure - and have begun to make themselves known and assert themselves as valuable members of their respective communities and prove that unlike the legends that have tainted their names for generations, they can coexist with normal Humans if given the chance.





    Political Structure


    The Yokai Clan is generally ruled on two levels – a global level and on a branch level.

    On a global level, it is the clan leader who has the last words. This Yokai is often the eldest member of the group, though there have been exceptions to this rule where the strongest or collectively elected member has taken up the mantle.

    On a branch level, it is often the highest esteemed yokai of a singular path which commands the whole branch, but what makes up the respect required to fill the role is dependent on the branch in question. These count three in total and serve as advisors to the Clan Leader and as captain of their branch. Their title is generalised by adding the prefix ‘Great” or “Dai” – Dai-oni, Daitengu and Daibaku.

    Appearances


    There are few physical traits that are shared among all yokai and somewhat give them their identity as non-humans.

    Horns. All yokai have horns by birth, growing out of their heads in a variety of numbers and shapes. Some are born with a singular horn, others come with the more common two-horn looks and a rare few come into life with a crown of horns like they were born for royalty. These horns can be as simple and straight-forward as a tower rising to the skies, or curls up in an almost decorative form akin to those of goats. While it is common practise for yokai to take great pride in their horns, it is not unknown that some have cut it off in an attempt to look more ‘humane’ – a sacrifice many frown upon but remains existing even today.

    Eldritch eyes. The eyes of a yokai are beautiful in their alien nature and are the most universal manifestation of their ancestral bloodline. Some sport a breath-taking palette of hues, others boast a most mesmerising stare and yet other yokai walk around with what seem to be mini-galaxies of stars within ink-black pools. No two pair of eyes ever look the same, and it is commonly believed that these are pretty much the fingerprints of a yokai.





    Bloodline Traits


    The Yokai’s bloodline is mostly one of bodily mutations, resulting in the development of a doujutsu and some physical traits inherent to the dominant branch within their demonic heritage.

    The price to gain the powers of each tier is as following:
    - Tier I: 250 XP
    - Tier II: 250 XP
    - Tier III: 500 XP

    The Demon’s Eye – Doujutsu
    A universal given to all yokai are their eyes and the latent power it grants them. While their doujutsu hardly rivals that of the Uchiha or Byakugan, they remain nonetheless useful for any and all yokai in some way as they further evolve within their own dominant paths.

    The Yokai, being supernatural in heritage, have a natural affinity when it comes to perceiving their reality. It is something beyond that of the five inherent senses; easily defined as a sixth sense. When chakra fuels their eyes, this slumbering sense is enhanced and increases their ability to perceive minute details within the fabric of the living world. At the same time, the Yokai are more knowledgeable about eldritch existences than humans do, which grants them practically a natural ability to pierce through the fabrics of falsities – genjutsu. As a clan bound to supernatural deceivers by heritage, their active doujutsu is further capable of ‘piercing the veil’ of genjutsu created perceptions. In effect, this is an increase in the power of an already active 'Demon Eye' by fuelling it with even more chakra.

    The Devil's Eye appears, at its base activated form, as if the corner of the user's eyes were leaking out an ethereal flame which dissipates into the air near them. This flame does not produce heat nor is tangible, however, it is a representation of the owner's demonic ancestry.

    The Demon’s Blood – Mutations
    These physical mutations are passives. They gradually grow into maturity as the yokai taps into, and masters, the dormant power of their bloodline according to old rites. However, every yokai manifests this power differently and in the course of time three particular paths have come forward:
    - Path of Oni.
    - Path of Tengu.
    - Path of Baku.

    Each of these paths grant different passives to its yokai. A yokai must choose one of the paths upon character creation, and may never change that path afterwards. The bonus granted by the paths does not stack; they are the total cumulated bonuses granted at each tier.

    Path of Oni:

    Physique. Those who were born under this Path often have naturally reddened skin-tones, more often than not resulting in them having the most demonic appearances out of all the Paths while also making them the most recognizable.

    Their "Devil's Eye" takes on a much more intense appearance, with the flames shooting out to the side of the individual's head on either side - yet still producing no heat. Their pupils also appear as if they have flames within them, adding to their fearsome demeanour.

    The Path of the Oni is one of raw power beyond all else. Following this Path requires honing one's physical prowess to its limits and then surpassing those limits, daring to go further beyond until the individually eventually evolves themselves past Human limits. Each rank into this Bloodline grants the user bonuses that represent their growth in physical ability, as well as alters their appearance slightly to visually show this growth.

    Path of Tengu:

    Physique. Tengu appear mostly human in nature, although most individuals have more rounded eyes than the typical Human, which is hardly noticeable unless one takes a long glance at the Yokai in question. They are identified by a slender, almost malnourished build, although this can be mitigated if the Tengu cares properly for their body despite the natural aversion to doing so.

    Yokai born under the path of the Tengu are natural craftsmen, often choosing to shy away from their more naturally demonic counterparts and choosing instead to integrate themselves with society as best as possible. These Yokai find themselves welcomed by most humans due to their skill in their respective craft.

    Physique. They are most easily recognized by their pale skin, unnatural pristine complexions and wings. Dark auras and eyes that seem to be filled with stars and galaxies which turn red when utilizing their particular Devil's Eye techniques are more subtle signs to recognise them – their general appearance often has others mistake them for angels; a mistake they’ll only make once.

    These Yokai are believed to descend from ancestors who once fed on the dreams and nightmares of Humans.

    Description: The mythological Tengu is seen in many different lights when it comes to its enigmatic existence. One of that is that of a nimble craftsman and warrior. The embodiment of war appeals to the Tengu of the Yokai clan, and therefore they created a fighting style which served as the base for many different weapons, no matter small or tall, one-handed or two-handed.

    The 'Tengu School' fighting style is one which blends deception and grace into one, turning even the lowest student into a flurry of strikes and steps. It emphasises a persistent cadence of assaults, evasive manoeuvres and counters in which the type of weapon matters not - what matters is that the student hones this 'War Dance' until they can rightfully consider themselves a 'weapon master' in the truest sense.

    Description: Even though the Yokai generally maintain a sense of humanity so as to remain (mostly) undisturbed, there are moments where they find the need to 'unleash hell' upon the world in the form of unbridled, pure-blood demonic pride. By tapping into their demonic ancestry, the yokai discards the human masquerade in favour of their demonic form. This activates the already present mutations inherent to their path, and forces them into a temporary transformation as the technique brings out their cursed bloodline in full.


    Oni

    • In this form, the oni rivals the most powerful of its kin, threading upon the pathways of the Greater Oni legends. Fully transformed, their skin is hellish red. Horns and nails turn black, and their face becomes the reflection of malefic intimidation. They receive a boost to strength (+++) and constitution (+++) and are more than eager to make the world tremble in fear.



    Tengu

    • Ever closer to the greatest Tengu of lore, these creatures eschew the oni's power for increased mobility. Feathers cover their body to bring them closer to their avian heritage, and nails becomes sharpened claws to rake their opponents with in close quarters. Now light as the wind itself, the Tengu gains speed (++) and coordination (++) in this form. Growing a pair of jet-black wings to complete their demonic form, they are granted the ability of flight.



    Baku

    • Stepping into the Dreamscape of their dream-eating ancestors, the Baku become as much dream as they are reality. They gain a translucent appearance, as if channelling the astral universe through their bodies. Their body mocking the thoughts of petty physics and materialistic reliance, weapons inflict damage to them as if backed by lesser strength (-1 tier). And their newfound connection to the Dreamscape allows them easier access to its eldritch insights - they gain a bonus to intelligence (++) and perception (++).

    Description: The Yokai generally preserve a sense of humanity as they pass the day, revealing their demonic ancestry only by the most persistent of tell-tale signs. But sometimes, the ugly nature of the demon simply must surface. That brief moment where the Yokai forcefully reveals their most fearsome face is a moment few would like to experience a second time. The terror is so great, their hapless target momentarily loses control over their finer motor skills, turning their actions into a clumsy stumble (coordination: -1 tier, 1 post).

    Weakness: For each subsequent use on the same target (in the same thread), the target's mind improves its resistance against the 'unexpected'. The techniques's coordination penalty is lowered by 1 disadvantage every use after the first until it completely loses its effect.

    Description:
    The ability to float or fly in the air is an ability often attributed to the Yokai of lore. By combining and improving the principles of the 'Gentle Step' and 'Gentle Descend', the Yokai gains the ability to 'run on air' which not only allows them to safely ascend and descend in a similar way to aforementioned techniques, but also allows them to remain standing still/floating in the air - a feat which was not possible before.

    While using this technique, movement is slightly faster than normal. This results in a speed increase of ++.

    Weakness: As this is not a form of flight, this technique can't be used if the practitioner has their freedom limited (stun, paralysis, limbs shackled...). Suffering such limitations while in the air may result in a painful experience involving gravity and solid ground.


    Oni Jutsu - These techniques require the hardy blood of the Oni. It is their supernatural resilience and fury that allows them to fully enjoy these techniques; passed on from one oni to another.

    Tengu Jutsu - These techniques require the cunning and finesse of the craftsman caste; the Tengu. It is the sort of power too physical for a Baku to deal with, yet too subtle for an Oni to make use of. The techniques are often passed on from Tengu to Tengu under the guise of games and riddles.

    Description: The Tengu's doujutsu path is known to grant them the ability of perceiving the tiniest flaws within their craft and capitalise on that during the creation of their crafts. However, such an intense focus towards labour adds little benefit to the Tengu focusing on their environment to discover the flaws of the world.

    This variant allows them to withdraw the almost tunnel-vision like perception in favour for a broader perspective of their surroundings. It grants the Tengu a bonus to perception (+++) while it is active.


    Weaknesses: -



    Baku Jutsu - The techniques shared among the Baku are old traditions and Hiden calling upon their eldritch affinity and their natural mental ability. They are often ethereal in their nature, and of such delicate nature the other paths hardly measure up the worth to be taught the true value of these old secrets.

    Description:
    Utilizing their Devil's Eye, a Yokai may take on a Human guise of their choosing that fits within the dimensions of their 'True Form'. This disguise cannot be more than one foot taller or shorter or have a weight difference of twenty pounds either more or less. While in this form, Yokai are able to pass themselves off as fully Human to those who observe them by casting a minor Genjutsu through their eyes at all who they can observe; this does mean, however, that those who they cannot observe or who the Yokai are unaware of may see their true form and that only once the Yokai is able to observe them is the illusion placed.

    Seeing as this is a constant illusory appearance, this technique cannot be broken by taking damage like the Transformation Technique and instead lasts until the Yokai either dispels the technique or their Stamina is depleted below the Upkeep Requirement.

    It is worth noting that a Yokai may also use this technique to only partially cover their true form for intimidation purposes, however, the full price of the technique must still be paid so long as it is in use.

    Other Genjutsu techniques may be performed while this technique is active.

    - Only works on those that the Yokai can observe.
    - Requires a constant upkeep cost to maintain.

    Description:
    Upon looking directly into one another's eyes, the Yokai casts a Genjutsu upon the target which clouds their mind and causes them to briefly be unable to clearly recall information regarding events or individuals that they have seen or made contact with within the previous ten minutes (or six posts). They are unable to recall names, dates, times, or any specific details regarding an event that had transpired within this timeframe or individuals that have been made contact with during this period -- meaning, for example:

    A target has spoken with their close friend within the last five minutes (three posts) before this Genjutsu was cast, upon the casting, they would be unable to recall this friends name or their exact relationship. However, they would not be able to be manipulated with this technique alone into becoming hostile toward this individual or otherwise wanting to harm them in any way, as their subconscious would still be aware that this individual is not an enemy or a threat.

    The same applies in the inverse of the situation, a target cannot be made to believe - with this technique alone - that a former enemy has become their ally, but they would be unable to accurately articulate why they are enemies and may be distracted by this technique enough as to not attack while it is active.

    In order to maintain this technique, the Yokai must maintain within direct sight of the individual and if they leave this vision - even for a second - the technique will be dispelled and cannot be attempted on the same individual within the same thread.

    This Technique lasts for up to six posts, so long as none of the aforementioned end-conditions have been met.

    Weaknesses:
    - Can be undone via Time Reversal Jutsu or similar technique.
    - Direct sight must be maintained on the target to function.

    Description:
    While under the influence of the "Devil's Eye: Confusion" technique or another "Devil's Eye" technique that affects the memories of a target, a Yokai may cast this additional layer of Genjutsu by touching the target with their bare hands - the place that they touch must also be bare skin - and in doing so, whisper either in Demonic Speech or in Human Speech to the target a phrase that is up to the user to determine.

    Once this is done, the target will begin to see the user as an individual they are romantically inclined toward despite what they may have originally thought about the user before this technique was cast. The target will feel compelled to be as close to the user as possible and is suggestive toward requests, however, cannot be made to perform any violent or harmful acts while under this technique's effect.

    While under this Genjutsu, the target's eyes will take on a pink color and thus be instantly recognizable as under the influence of the user even to those who have not experienced the parent technique. This, along with the restriction imposed on actions that the target can be made to perform make this technique mainly useful in one-on-one intelligence gathering or manipulation, rather than for use on a single target while multiple individuals are present.

    This technique will be ended if the Parent Technique is ended, or if the user performs any act that will cause harm to the target either directly or indirectly. Otherwise, it will remain active for up to six posts.

    Weaknesses:
    - Can only be used on one individual at a time.
    - Parent Technique must be in use before this technique can be activated.
    - Ends upon ending of the Parent Technique.
    - Restricted in the application as to what can be done / what can be asked of the target.

    Description: Basically a Baku Path-variant of the Genjutsu Kai, the Dream Devouring Technique requires the Yokai to have their genjutsu-afflicted target within their sight. Drawing upon the demon heritage that gave their name, the Baku 'devours' an active genjutsu by forcing their own chakra into the mind of the target with the help of their active Devil's Eye.

    The activation cost equals that of the dispelled genjutsu's rank.
    Weaknesses: The Yokai can only use this technique on others, not on themselves.

    Revamped for more clarity. There were a couple of much-needed edits due to old regulations seemingly no longer being applicable (mainly single + to jutsu power).

    Still requires some discussions.
    - Old Oni 'demon form'. It's currently replaced with a global 'genjutsu pierce' ability which was only available to tengu and baku. Demon form granted +1 tier str and con for C rank activation/D rank upkeep, which stacked with the path passives. How feasible is this at this point in time? Is this a must to keep or should this become an oni-only jutsu?

    Oni Con boosts must only be for the purpose of resisting poisons.  (See OG BL)

    Baku shouldn't get Per boosts that are flat, it needs to be purely for the purpose of piercing Genjutsu. (See OG BL)

    I would suggest just C&Ping the information there into the relevant Paths section otherwise certain nuances are lost.

    You could turn the Demon Form into a jutsu that all the Paths can learn.

    Genjutsu effectiveness of perceived illusions is lowered (-)

    Oni

    Tengu

    • Tier I: The Tengu embraces their bird-kin appearance, putting their usually skinny looks to good use. Tiny feathers grow over their body and their skin gains a darker tint all the while. Lighter than usual, their speed and swiftness grows: they gain a speed boost (+) and a coordination boost (+)
    • Tier II: The Tengu's scowl becomes more menacingly and feathers cover their appearance even more. Nails turn to claws, turning cunning creatures into a deceptively agile monstrosity . The Tengu gains speed (++) and coordination (++).
    • Tier III: Ever closer to the greatest Tengu of lore, these creatures trade power for increased mobility. Light as the wind itself, the Tengu gains speed (++) and coordination (++). Growing a pair of jet-black wings, they add even more to their mobility with the ability for flight.



    Baku

    • Tier I: The Baku tap into their source of eldritch knowledge, calling upon old dreams and nightmares to fuel their insights to new levels. This grants them a bonus to intelligence (+) and general perception (+) as if possessing a sense of precognition.
    • Tier II: The Baku seems to drift upon eldritch energy and no longer touches the ground as it grows more transparent in its appearance (aesthetics). All the while becoming one with the Dreamverse, their understanding of the unseen grants them further insights in the form of intelligence (++) and perception (++)
    • Tier III: At this point, the Baku is as much dream as they are reality, seemingly unfazed by mundane weapons and petty physics. Weapons pass right through them and inflict damage as if backed by lesser strength (-1 tier). With newfound 'rules of reality', the Baku maintains their eldritch presence. They gain a bonus to intelligence (++) and perception (++).


    Weaknesses: This is a purely physical mutation and is therefore susceptible to techniques which would counter such. Especially the ability to Seal the supernatural (a common approach used against yokai) is highly effective, counting as if they were +1 rank in power when dealing with this technique.

    For the con and perk, keep it as 1 flat tier but make it the last thing they get. So Rank 3.

    If the caster's intel is lower it will be easier to break the Genjutsu. So treat it as a debuff to their intel.

    +1 tier to Con and Perc are already at T3. As stated, previous bonuses don't stack; each tier provides the total gained benefits across a gradual gain/growth.

    The plus system doesn't make sense in the context of resistance to Poisons as the Poison/Con system doesn't account for advantages and disadvantages. I'd rather the full tier be granted at Level 3 as opposed to a gradual system. I think the Clan is pretty powerful even with that in play. They get a plus to perception, a tier debuff to Intel, and then each clan has a specialty buffs on top of it.

    I'll check the latest jutsu soon, I just want to square away the clan's mechanics first.

    The + to percept and tier to genjutsu is an ability, not a passive. And a very situational one as it only applies to visual gen. I don't know if it's fair to count that as power since they pay (cheaper) for it. That's like saying a shinobi with an enhanced state or other additional power can't have access to jutsu.

    Also, the con is not vs poison here. The OG had a +1 tier vs psn at T2 and a +1 tier general con (and +1 tier str) for 3ch/round (their demon form) at T3 that stacked with each other. With current rules not sustaining several of the path's old bonuses, I believe turning the whole combo into a gradual con bonus seems better? And with demon form becoming a jutsu, it'll inch closer to normal jutsu rules.

    Xurious clarified a couple of things. I understood that '+con vs poison' was not a thing. So it sounded like narrowing it down wasn't being supported as +1 tier is just +++.

    I changed the oni to fall in line with the mandatory baku changes already applied. They had + power to visual genjutsu (which is not supported), which was replaced with T1 and T2: + to percept, T3: +1 tier to visual genjutsu. So oni now have T1 and T2: + to con, T3: +1 tier to con for poison purpose.

    I'd like to change the tengu path into something similar too by making the crafting bonus a +1 tier to crafting at T3, and have T1/T2 benefits be substituted by something else. This mostly because bonus to crafting is only a superficial bonus that benefits timegain on an OOC level. In game, it really gives no advantage whatsoever as every other shinobi craftsman can still reach the same quality of craft. And like this, the three paths actually are streamlined, too.

    I was about to ask for suggestions on your side but I'll give it a try nonetheless.

    Tengu, being inspired by bird-like yokai, make having gains to speed a natural course of action (Xur's suggestion). But on the other hand, being crafters, I think gains to strength as a manifestation of their persistent crafting sounds equally reasonable.

    That said, I'm not as familiar with the clan or the creator as you or Xur might be. Any other suggestions you'd have in mind?

    I'd permit a limited form of flight. My understanding is that Yokai can't actually fly but I'd be in favor of a perk that allowed them to take full advantage of their wings albeit gradually.

    Tengu and Oni usually don't have wings. That trait is attributed to the Baku, actually, as they are the only one with that descriptor in their branch. It'd have to be wingless flight if I work it in? Then again, I have tengu flight covered in the demon form jutsu.

    I talked it over with Xur to find some additional ideas, but we ran dry quickly. We'd opt for strength bonus under the idea that crafter's would build that up naturally and that Tengu would need to have some degree of mastery over weapons they craft, even if only for a demo or test.

    If that's approvable, I believe only the demon form jutsu remains to be discussed. The power of the jutsu grows accordingly to their KKG mastery.

Especially the ability to Seal the supernatural (a common approach used against yokai) is highly effective, counting as if they were +1 rank in power when dealing with this technique.

    Description: Even though the Yokai generally maintain a sense of humanity so as to remain (mostly) undisturbed, there are moments where they find the need to 'unleash hell' upon the world in the form of unbridled, pure-blood demonism. By tapping into their demonic ancestry, the yokai discards the human masquerade in favour of their demonic form. This activates the already present mutations inherent to their path, and forces them into a temporary transformation as the technique brings out their cursed bloodline in full.


    Oni

    • Tier I: Brute force and raw intimidation, the oni's mutations hardens their skin as it reddens and turns the yokai closer towards the imagery of a 'true oni'. They gain a boost to muscle power (str: +) and their ability to bite through pain (con: +).
    • Tier II: Growing closer to the traditional oni of lore, claws and fangs grow stronger, bigger and sharper. Their damage threat increases (str ++) and inching closer towards a berserker's state, pain is further mitigated (con ++).
    • Tier III: In this form, the oni rivals the most powerful of its kin, threading upon the pathways of the Greater Oni legends. Fully transformed, they receive a boost to strength (+++) and constitution (+++) and are more than eager to make the world tremble in fear. Any of their strikes causes craters to appear, further cultivating the potential the earth crumbles under the feet of opponents or that buildings collapse.



    Tengu

    • Tier I: The Tengu embraces their bird-kin appearance, putting their usually skinny looks to good use. Tiny feathers grow over their body and their skin gains a darker tint all the while. Lighter than usual, their speed and swiftness grows: they gain a speed boost (+) and a coordination boost (+)
    • Tier II: The Tengu's scowl becomes more menacingly and feathers cover their appearance even more. Nails turn to claws, turning cunning creatures into a deceptively agile monstrosity . The Tengu gains speed (++) and coordination (++).

    T1 has D-rank power for B-rank cost. That's a heavy loss.
    T2 is equal in power and is entitled to C-rank upkeep cost. Still losing out in cost here.
    T3 had mildly higher rank power than B-rank cost for B-rank upkeep cost, but only after spending the 1'000 XP cost to get that unlocked. Upkeep cost, not being a Physical spec, is still in line with the power, and if we win it won't be that big a difference.

    Chi asked me to take another look at it and was okay with me increasing to 15 CP. Any Blue Mod has the right to look over something again especially something as important as a remix to a Clan.

    Tier III is 2 tiers of buffs (S Tier) for B Rank upkeep. It should be 20 CP per the rules but because it's a KKG based thing I will give leeway and my compromise was 15 CP. The Clan already gives buffs and perks specific to each division of the clan as well as perks to the clan as a whole. I can understand a chakra discount though which is why I proposed 15 and not the full 20.

    Swift Release costs 10 chakra and grants the following:
    - A-rank power.
    - 2 tiers of buff (S-rank)
    - They auto-gain a buff of undefined tiers to their own perception to bring it to whichever speed they currently maintain - this to avoid tunnel vision, as stated literally, meaning they preserve normal sight during movement. This is a benefit not mentioned in the jutsu itself but it is written in the clan description. So it still applies.
    - A 1 tier undodgeable debuff (B-rank) for the enemy on one of the most valuable stat for any combat form (perception). This also denies precog abilities such as Sharingan, so functioning effectively as a INT, PER and doujutsu counter at the same time.
    - Being an AE, the concept of Swift Release or its signature jutsu can be applied to any other fighting style while granting the same benefits - this is added versatility on top of that one 'oof' jutsu that does not get mentioned. The same level of versatility can't be given to a clan that gains passive buffs mostly and has jutsu otherwise falling in line with the norm.

    Per the rules, that makes more than 10 CP or even 20 CP upkeep in cost, right?

    You're asking us to pay 15 chakra for a B-rank jutsu that grants 2 tiers buff... to the oni only. Tengu and Baku get other T3 benefits which are either achievable at C-rank (in the case of Tengu) or situational (in the case of Baku). The drawback of the jutsu is an actual drawback, unlike that of Swift Release's jutsu where Doton can function as a benefit - as stated in the KKG itself - or by using Water walking/Tree climbing, which are both free of cost. And we haven't talked about the weight of 15 CP on the lower tiers. At that cost, T1 and T2 are redundant as any simple jutsu gets the same bonus cheaper.

    So please reconsider that raise.
