Detention Holding Center #2122 Empty Detention Holding Center #2122

Post by Shimiko Chinoike Sat Dec 21, 2019 11:57 am

Lady Mora was escorted from the Kumogakure gates to an detention facility in the Administrative District. The facility was more of a jail than a prison, and even then it was set up to hold white collar criminals or people of significant importance. Mora did not resist and she complied with all relevant instructions. She was placed in a cell with basic amenities while the government sorted out what to do with her. Word of her arrest spread like wildfire through the city. The Jashinist community was immediately up in arms.

The Orthodox Church of Jashin had for several years now existed peacefully in the city of Kumogakure. By decree of the Raikage, their religion was fully legalized and was permitted to exist alongside the other religions of the country. Despite whatever protestations were made by the Daimyou, the minor feudal lords, and other civil authorities in the country Lady Nariko had given the Church more or less free reign to operate openly. They were allowed to sacrifice only those who had been convicted of capital crimes. The damned, defeated, and destructive were marched into the halls of the Church and executed with the blessing of the State. It was an beneficial arrangement for both sides. The Church no longer had to sacrifice the innocent and destitute in order to fulfill their spiritual obligations and Kumo no longer had to worry about the cost of killing death row prisoners. The agreement seemed destined to usher in a new age of peace and religious tolerance. Unfortunately, the truce could not last forever.

The arrest of Lady Superior Mora was the first catalyst in the mass mobilization of the Jashinist Church. The second would be the disrespectful libel written by the Buddhists of Kumogakure. The Church's legalization had disturbed many. Chief among them were a group of Buddhists who owned a monastery in the Administrative district. The Buddhists of Hashi Temple were fierce critics of the Orthodoxy. Jashinism and Buddhism were natural enemies. Every time adherents of the religion came into contact with one another, a trail of bodies and lakes of blood resulted. Jashin regarded the murder-adverse monks to be the single greatest heresy that man had wrought upon itself. In turn the Buddhists viewed the wanton murder faith as a blight upon civilized society. The two had miraculously avoided coming to blows within the city but they had often traded vicious insults through their newspapers. The tensions between the two did not explode into violence but the enmity was becoming so severe that not even Kumo could afford to ignore it much longer.  The Buddhists of Hashi Temple owned a newspaper and had decided one day to print a particularly scathing and disrespectful opinion piece slandering Lady Superior Mora Mikiri. The piece was a direct reaction to her arrest and it had referred to her as a "Whore of Bloodshed" and a "Death Pimp". When the article was widely circulated not even the Sacristans could stop the rank and file Jashinists from pouring into the streets to protest the arrest and subsequent blasphemous characterization of their leader.

Mora did not stop them. She could (although admittedly she was certain a few would not heed her) but she had no inclination to do so. Enough was enough. Every day that the Buddhist religion resided in Kumo was another day that Jashin's anger boiled. It was time for something to be done about the Jashinist situation. The faithful were also growing impatient with respect to sacrifices. When Nariko had legalized the religion, the prisons across Lightning Country were teeming with death row prisoners to sacrifice. However, the brutal and frequent carnage of the Church had created a severe backlog. As the Orthodoxy won more converts and Jashinists from around the world flocked into Kumo, the demand quickly outpaced supply. The criminal justice system could not keep up and now many Jashinists had to go weeks without killing in the name of their deity. It was an unacceptable situation for all involved. The Sacristans had met on the subject several times and decided that the time was not ripe to extract more concessions from Nariko. Now that the faithful were out in the streets openly calling for their religion to be respected and feared, the Superior Sacristan and her inner circle decided that the window of opportunity had opened.

Mora had wisely decided to hold off on acting until Shimiko had left the village. The Superior Sacristan did not want to weigh down her disciple with such politics considering how busy she was. If Nariko acted rashly and assaulted to the Church for merely protesting and demanding to be elevated then the balance would tip in their. The faithful would survive albeit they'd be lessened in number and strength. Shimiko would return and kill first and ask questions later. The result would be a narrow victory for the Church. On the other hand, if Mora could force Nariko into a compromise then there need not even be bloodshed. The Defender of Faith would return to Kumo to find that her Church had taken its rightful place above the other heretical beliefs that plagued the city. It was a desperate gamble but the situation was so volatile that the only way to play the situation was high risk and high reward.

She waited and prayed in her cell until she could hear chants coming from outside the facility. The roar of the faithful was so deafening that the guards were running to and fro unsure of what to do. The protests had started with a mild prayer and chant. Jashinists camped outside the facilities while kneeling in reverence to Jashin. The scene would look like this. However, as time wore on the protest became louder and more unruly. The Jashinists stomped and screamed in the streets, Mora and her entourage headed into the Raikage's Office. Orthodox Jashinists had a tradition they had long employed against lesser feudal lords and small time mayors. They'd gather in the streets and march while stomping their feet in rhythm. The form of protest was designed to intimidate and frighten their political opponents. The symbology was rather simple. The Jashinists would stomp and tread upon their enemies unless nothing but blood and guts remained. The only hope was to acquiesce to their demands before the figurative stomping turned literal. The violent imagery evoked by the protest was extreme and some might even call it threatening although Mora had publicly maintained that it was peaceful and that not a soul would be harmed by people marching.

The Raikage and her army of bureaucrats would be able to hear the stomping, screaming, and marching outside. The protest would continue for hours growing more intense and animated as the day wore on. The crowds would be carrying large banners bearing the Church's symbol. They'd be flanked on all sides by armed shinobi that were loyal to the Church. The Church's militia wore ski-masks as their number was indeed shocking. Did the Church truly have so many shinobi under its command? Worse yet, it appeared that members of the Chinoike were marching with them making it clear that one of the village's largest clans were in support of the Orthodoxy.

Eventually, the detention facility would release Mora as promised. The Lady Superior was led out of the facility and unhandcuffed. The crowd cheered loudly and her flock threw roses and flowers down in support of her. Her closest Sacristans ran up to her and gave her her staff. She accepted it and struck it against the ground. She held her hand up for silence and slowly a hush fell over the gathering.

"My children! My children! The sounds of your prayers can be heard from across the city! This is what our holy book means when it says that the cries of the faithful will soon shake the heavens! Today, we bring Kumogakure to its knees, tomorrow the world! This sacred land was the place upon which Jashin saw fit to restore his Church. It is the place upon which he saw fit to come down in the form of man as the Necrossiah. It is the place upon which for the first time in history he saw fit to grant the Raikage the wisdom to legalize his Church. This land is the home of Jashinism and so long as it heeds the words of the Orthodoxy, Jashin will continue to bless it."

    The crowed roared with approval.

"However! Raikage Nariko has been led astray. Our wise and faithful leader has had her ears poisoned by the Daimyou, the Buddhists, the intolerant anti-Jashinist establishment! I arrived at the gates with the intention of protecting this beautiful homeland of ours and to lend my spiritual counsel. I was stopped and arrested by anti-Jashinists who convinced Nariko-sama that I was there to do her harm. It was thrown in jail and a fine levied against me for the crime of wanting to assist my Kage.....however the heathens and heretics that have gotten to our beloved Raikage had forgotten one thing. They had forgotten that the Orthodoxy is a religion of blood and war, and that our God is a God of Death!"

The protest was whipped up to the frenzy.

"Let us remind them that we will not be cowed and silenced! I will pray for Nariko-sama....that she throw out these blasphemous advisers and treacherous heathens. For only by recognizing the primacy fo the Church in affairs of state can this land be saved. The time for spiritual compromises and neglect is at an end. Kumo must recognize the authority of Jashin and his Church. March with me! March with me my children! March with your Lady Superior to the Raikage's Complex! We will let her know that while we support and sustain her, we will not permit God to be disrespected!"

Mora raised her staff into the air and a sea of fists rose in solidarity with their leader. The Lady Superior of the Church walked forward to the head of the protest and lead the shouting, screaming, and stomping Churchgoers to Nariko's office.

This was going to be perhaps the most important and consequential meeting in Kumogakure history.
